Download or read book Journals and Letters written by Frances Burney and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2006-05-25 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novelist and playwright Frances (Fanny) Burney, 1752-1840, was also a prolific writer of journals and letters, beginning with the diary she started at fifteen and continuing until the end of her eventful life. From her youth in London high society to a period in the court of Queen Charlotte and her years interned in France with her husband Alexandre d'Arblay during the Napoleonic Wars, she captured the changing times around her, creating brilliantly comic and candid portraits of those she encountered - including the 'mad' King George, Samuel Johnson, Sir Joshua Reynolds, David Garrick and a charismatic Napoleon Bonaparte. She also describes, in her most moving piece, undergoing a mastectomy at fifty-nine without anaesthetic. Whether a carefree young girl or a mature woman, Fanny Burney's forthright, intimate and wickedly perceptive voice brings her world powerfully to life.

Download or read book Journals written by Alexander Mackenzie and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2022-02-28T19:10:34Z with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Mackenzie was the first European to complete a land crossing of the continent of America north of Mexico, preceding the famous Lewis and Clark expedition by twelve years. In his journals he details two separate voyages: one up what is now known as the Mackenzie River to the Arctic Ocean in 1789, and another to what is now Bella Coola on the Pacific Ocean in 1792 and 1793. Both journals provide a detailed description of the many difficulties in navigating and traveling in a country that had yet to be mapped. Having to rely on Native guides and rumors, and enduring hardships that almost beggar belief, Mackenzie and his team were able to achieve their objective of finding an east to west land crossing through the Rocky Mountains and to the Pacific Ocean. Although his route didn’t prove as practical as routes found by later explorers, Mackenzie has cemented himself as a key explorer of Western Canada. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Download or read book Letters Home written by Sylvia Plath and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2011-02-03 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letters Home represents Sylvia Plath's correspondence from her time at Smith College in the early 1950s, through her meeting with, and subsequent marriage to, the poet Ted Hughes, up to her death in February 1963. The letters are addressed mainly to her mother, with whom she had an extremely close and confiding relationship, but there are also some to her brother Warren and her benefactress Mrs Prouty. Plath's energy, enthusiasm and her passionate tackling of life burst onto these pages, providing us with a vivid and intimate portrait of a woman who has come to be regarded as one of the greatest of twentieth-century poets. In addition to her capacity for domestic and writerly happiness, however, these letters also hint at Plath's potential for deep despair, which reached its crisis when she holed up in a London flat for the terrible winter of 1963.

Download or read book The Letters of John Cheever written by John Cheever and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2009-07-21 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Cheever, novelist, short-story writer, and winner of the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, was a prolific writer of letters, sending as many as thirty in a week. These letters, culled from thousands written to famous writers and celebrities - including John Updike, Josephine Herbst, William Maxwell, Saul Bellow, Hope Lange and Philip Roth - his family, friends, and lovers, paint an intimate and surprising self-portrait that is as vivid as any character Cheever invented. Edited and annotated by his son Benjamin, Cheever's letters trace his development as a writer and as a man. They reveal him to be complex, flawed, and full of contradictions. On display are not just his ambitions and weaknesses, his alcoholism and his cloaked bisexuality, but also the evolution of his wit and style and, most of all, his love of life.
