They impair the me mory, debilitate the understanding, and pervert the moral faculties. It was probably from observing these effects of intemperance in drinking, upon the mind, that a law was formerly passed in Spain which excluded drunkards from being witnesses in a court of justice. H., January 8, 1827 The bodies of some drunkards have been so thoroughly steeped in spirit as literally to take fire and consume to ashes; It'is said that no case of this combustion has ever occurred except among hard drinkefs, and it is altogether probable that, in every such case, an inflammable air has exhaled from the lungs or skin, and has been kindled by the too near approach of a lighted taper, or some ignited substance. There is doubtless more danger than has been imagined, in a, deep drinker's bringing his mouth or nose close to a lighted taper at evening. The wonder is, that instances of the combustion of drunkards should so rarely' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Some Observations on Dr Rush s Work on the Diseases of the Mind

Download or read book Some Observations on Dr Rush s Work on the Diseases of the Mind written by George Hayward and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Observations on Dr. Rush's Work, on "the Diseases of the Mind" With Remarks on the Nature and Treatment of Insanity This notice has been taken of the subject, because there is frequent reference in the present volume to the doctrine of the unity of disease, and at the same time a disposition is shewn to add new names to the long catalogue already in the nosology. Madness, for example, is subdivided into mania, manienla, and menalgia, and the same thing the author has done in his other writings, with regard to hepatitis, and rheumatism. There really seems to be no use whatever in these minute divisions, and they appear particularly unreasonable when they are proposed by a man, who is continually declaiming against all classification of diseases. They have been designated in common language, by the terms, nervous, spasmodic , bilious, indigestion, stomach com plaints, low spirits, vapours, 89 c. A generic]: definition of them, from their protean shape and multiformappearance, is almost imprac ticable. They vary in every constitution; and assume, in the same person, at different times of life, an inconstant assemblage of symptoms. Book The Selected Writings of Benjamin Rush

Download or read book The Selected Writings of Benjamin Rush written by Dagobert D. Runes and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Benjamin Rush was a Founding Father of the United States. He lived in Pennsylvania and was a physician, writer, educator, humanitarian and devout Christian, as well as the founder of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Rush was a signatory of the Declaration of Independence and attended the Continental Congress. Later in life, he became a professor of medical theory and clinical practice at the University of Pennsylvania. Despite having a wide influence on the development of American government, he is not as widely known as many of his American contemporaries. Rush was also an early opponent of slavery and capital punishment. Despite his great contributions to early American society, Rush may be more famous today as the man who, in 1812, helped reconcile the friendship of Thomas Jefferson and John Adams by encouraging the two former Presidents to resume writing to each other. The editor of the preface of this book gives an in-depth look into Benjamin Rush’s life. The writings of Rush, which are contained in this book, show a wide range of interest and knowledge embracing agriculture and the mechanical arts, chemistry and medicine, political science, and theology. Included are letters he wrote in an effort to dispel prejudice, to fight oppression, and to elevate the lot of the lowly.
