Book The Use of Simple Observables to Predict Infrared Extinction Coefficients of Atmospheric Aerosols

Download or read book The Use of Simple Observables to Predict Infrared Extinction Coefficients of Atmospheric Aerosols written by G. H. Goedecke and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several model aerosols of a given type, having the same visibility, but different yet reasonable microstructure, exhibit very wide dispersion, as much as 700%, in values of transmission at wavelengths from 2.0 to 10.6 micrometers. At near infrared wavelengths, from the visible to 2.0 micrometers, the dispersion is reduced, to a tolerable value of 10% at 1.06 micrometers. Two methods are suggested for exploiting the theoretical predictive techniques reported here. Results of a study designed to determine some of the effects of multiple scattering in low visibility situations (fog and a haze-soot mixture) indicate that laser system detectors of small solid angle register a transmission given very accurately by the single-scattering exponential transmission law, even for optical thickness greater than unity, but that detectors of large solid angle observe a considerably enhanced transmission for such optical depths. Also reported are results of two relevant but peripheral investigations, one concerning the application of dispersion relations to the complex reflectivity, the other concerning a necessary modification of radiative transfer theory under certain circumstances.

Download or read book Atmospheric Aerosols written by Olivier Boucher and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-18 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook aims to be a one stop shop for those interested in aerosols and their impact on the climate system. It starts with some fundamentals on atmospheric aerosols, atmospheric radiation and cloud physics, then goes into techniques used for in-situ and remote sensing measurements of aerosols, data assimilation, and discusses aerosol-radiation interactions, aerosol-cloud interactions and the multiple impacts of aerosols on the climate system. The book aims to engage those interested in aerosols and their impacts on the climate system: graduate and PhD students, but also post-doctorate fellows who are new to the field or would like to broaden their knowledge. The book includes exercises at the end of most chapters. Atmospheric aerosols are small (microscopic) particles in suspension in the atmosphere, which play multiple roles in the climate system. They interact with the energy budget through scattering and absorption of solar and terrestrial radiation. They also serve as cloud condensation and ice nuclei with impacts on the formation, evolution and properties of clouds. Finally aerosols also interact with some biogeochemical cycles. Anthropogenic emissions of aerosols are responsible for a cooling effect that has masked part of the warming due to the increased greenhouse effect since pre-industrial time. Natural aerosols also respond to climate changes as shown by observations of past climates and modelling of the future climate.

Book Atmospheric Extinction Measurements at Nd YAG and DF Laser Wavelengths Performed in Conjunction with the JAN Propagation Tests June September 1975

Download or read book Atmospheric Extinction Measurements at Nd YAG and DF Laser Wavelengths Performed in Conjunction with the JAN Propagation Tests June September 1975 written by Naval Research Laboratory (U.S.). Optical Radiation Branch and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NRL Infrared Mobile Optical Radiation Laboratory (IMORL) consisting of various infrared laser sources, large-aperture collimating optics, and precision calibrated infrared detectors and electronics was operated in conjunction with the JAN Baseline Demonstration Laser propagation tests during June-September 1975. The trailer-housed elements of the IMORL unit were deployed so as to use an atmospheric measurement path about 5 km long between the TRW Capistrano Test Site and Camp Pendleton Marine Base. Extensive measurements of atmospheric transmission at several DF laser wavelengths between 3.6 and 4.1 micrometers were obtained as well as measurements at the Nd-YAG laser wavelength of 1.06 micrometers. The optical measurements were supported by meteorological observations near the IMORL transmitter and receiver sites. Atmospheric aerosol distributions were monitored during the experiments, and Mie scattering calculations were performed using the aerosol data and were compared to aerosol extinction values derived from the optical measurements obtained using the 5-km-long path. The water-vapor dependence of molecular absorption for each of the 22 DF laser lines studied was compared to values obtained during earlier experiments at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and to theoretical predictions based on a HI-TRAN calculation using a line atlas. The experimental apparatus used (IMORL facility) and the measurements procedures followed are briefly described. The measurement results obtained and their comparisons to theoretical predictions for molecular absorption and aerosol scattering at DF laser wavelengths are presented and discussed. (Author).

Book Models for the Aerosols of the Lower Atmosphere and the Effects of Humidity Variations on Their Optical Properties

Download or read book Models for the Aerosols of the Lower Atmosphere and the Effects of Humidity Variations on Their Optical Properties written by Eric P. Shettle and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerosol models have been developed for the lower atmosphere. These models are representative of conditions found in rural, urban, and maritime air masses. The changes in the aerosol properties with variations in the relative humidity are discussed. To describe the aerosol optical properties in the extreme of 100 percent relative humidity, several fog models are presented. For each model the coefficients for extinction, scattering, and absorption, the angular scattering distribution, and other optical parameters have been computed for wavelengths between 0.2 and 40 microns. These aerosol models are presented together with a review of their experimental basis. The optical properties of these models are discussed and some comparisons of the model with experimental measurements are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
