Book Environmental Radiation Measurements

Download or read book Environmental Radiation Measurements written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and published by Ncrp. This book was released on 1976 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In recent years, the need for accurate, reliable and interpretable measurements of environmental radiation and radioactivity has increased steadily. Such requirements as the assessment of exposure to man from natural and manmade sources, the evaluation of compliance with governmental regulations, knowledge of the movement and retention of manmade radionuclides due to man's use of such materials, and the investigation of geological processes and atmospheric phenomena have all contributed to this need. This report presents a unified and systematic consideration of environmental radiation measurements, especially with respect to the identification and characterization of smalll radiation fields and small concentrations of specific radionuclides, and the even smaller variations or changes in them. The role of measurements in the realistic assessment of dose to man through critical pathways is emphasized, serving as an introduction to the detailed discussions on sampling and sample analysis for radioactivity. Finally, the future needs and uses of environmental measurements, of new instrumentation, and of improved interpretations of the results are presented." --From Preface, page iii.

Book Environmental Radiation Measurements at the Former Soviet Union s Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site and Surrounding Villages

Download or read book Environmental Radiation Measurements at the Former Soviet Union s Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site and Surrounding Villages written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Environmental Measurements Laboratory served as scientific experts to the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Mission to Kazakhstan: Strengthening Radiation and Nuclear Safety Infrastructures in Countries of the former USSR, Special Task - Preassessment of the radiological situation in the Semipalatinsk and western areas of Kazakhstan. The former Soviet Union's largest nuclear test site was located near Semipalatinsk, Kazakhstan, and following Kazakhstan's independence, the IAEA committed to studying the environmental contamination and the resulting radiation exposure risk to the population due to 346 underground, 87 atmospheric and 26 surface nuclear detonations performed at the site between 1949 and 1989. As part of an 11-member team, environmental radiation measurements were performed during 2 weeks in July 1994. Approximately 30 sites were visited both within the boundaries of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site as well as in and around surrounding villages. Specifically, the objectives of the EML team were to apply independent methods and equipment to assess potential current radiation exposures to the population. Towards this end, the EML scientists collected in-situ gamma-ray spectra, performed external gamma dose rate measurements using pressurized ionization chambers, and collected soil samples in order to estimate the inventory and to determine the depth distribution of radionuclides of interest. With the exception of an area near an {open_quotes}atomic lake{close_quotes} and a 1 km2 area encompassing ground zero, all the areas visited by the team had external dose rates that were within typical environmental levels. The measurements taken within a 15 km radius of ground zero had elevated levels of 137Cs as well as the activation products 152Eu and 6°Co, The dose rate within a 1 km radius of ground zero ranged from 500 to 30000 nGy h−1.

Book Evaluation of Guidelines for Exposures to Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials

Download or read book Evaluation of Guidelines for Exposures to Technologically Enhanced Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Naturally occurring radionuclides are found throughout the earth's crust, and they form part of the natural background of radiation to which all humans are exposed. Many human activities-such as mining and milling of ores, extraction of petroleum products, use of groundwater for domestic purposes, and living in houses-alter the natural background of radiation either by moving naturally occurring radionuclides from inaccessible locations to locations where humans are present or by concentrating the radionuclides in the exposure environment. Such alterations of the natural environment can increase, sometimes substantially, radiation exposures of the public. Exposures of the public to naturally occurring radioactive materials (NORM) that result from human activities that alter the natural environment can be subjected to regulatory control, at least to some degree. The regulation of public exposures to such technologically enhanced naturally occurring radioactive materials (TENORM) by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and other regulatory and advisory organizations is the subject of this study by the National Research Council's Committee on the Evaluation of EPA Guidelines for Exposures to Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials.

Book Natural Background Radiation in the United States

Download or read book Natural Background Radiation in the United States written by National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP), successor to the National Committee on Radiation Protection and Measurements, has embarked on a program to examine and evaluate the many private studies and government programs related to sources of ionizing radiation that may contribute to the overall exposure of the population. An assessment of the radiation doses will be made in several broad categories, such as exposure from consumer products, occupational exposure, etc. To the extent possible, the results will be expressed in meaningful quantities and units so as to facilitate comparisons of sources and exposures. This report, the first in a series of reports envisioned under this program, is concerned with the assessment of the radiation dose to the population from natural background radiation. Included in this report are the absorbed doses to the population due to radiation from cosmic sources, radionuclides in the earth, internally deposited radionuclides, inhaled radioactivity and fallout from nuclear weapons tests." --From Preface, page iii.
