Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Exterior Ballistics: Ordnance Textbook; December 1920 The work of the ballistic computer is divided into three parts (1) the computation of the elements of standard trajectories; (2) the computation of differential corrections, whereby the elements of a standard trajectory may be corrected for nonstandard conditions; and (3) the utilization of the foregoing to construct range tables from firing records. As is shown in Chapter VI, the World War ushered in a new era in the handling of ballistic problems. This may be called the period of numerical integration. The approximations, which had been used to modify the simple Newtonian equations of motion into such form that they could be formally integrated, gave place to precise numerical integration of these equations in their original form. Practically parallel progress was made in all of the allied countries during the war. In America the great step in the computation of trajectories was the introduction of numerical integration Numerical integration had long been used in astronomical calculations, and so it was natural that an astronomer and mathematician, Prof. F. R Moulton, of the University of Chicago, while serving as a major in the Ordnance Depart ment of the United States Army, should have applied this method to ballistics. The practical work of this method was materially reduced by formulas for integrating ahead later introduced. The work can be still further reduced by a variant of Maj. Moulton's method, known as the tangent-reciprocal method. But this method has the pedagogical drawback of obscuring the physical meaning of the steps involved, and hence will not be given first place in this book.' The level of the text requires an undergraduate education in mathematics, physics, and mechanical or aerospace engineering. The basic principles of ballistic science are developed from a comprehensive definition of the aerodynamic forces that control the flight dynamics of symmetric projectiles. The author carefully starts with the basic vacuum point mass trajectory, adds the effects of drag, discusses the action of winds, simple flat fire approximations, Coriolis effects and concludes with the classic modified point mass trajectories. Included in the discussion are analytical methods, change of variables from time to distance, numerical solutions and a chapter on the Siacci Method. The Siacci Method provides a historical perspective for computing flat fire trajectories by simple quadrature and is used in the sporting arms industy. The final six chapters of the book present an extensive physical and mathematical analysis of the motion of symmetric projectiles. The linearized equations of angular and swerving motion are derived in detail. The effects of mass asymmetry, in-bore yaw, cross wind and launch in a slipstream are discussed. Special consideration is given to the derivation and explanation of aerodynamic jump. These subjects are then expanded to include a complete chapter on nonlinear aerodynamic forces and moments. The final chapter in the book presents an overview of experimental methods for measuring the flight dynamics of projectiles. The great forte of Modern Exterior Ballistics is the author's effort to provide many fine specific examples of projectile motion illustrating key flight behaviors. The extensive collection of data on projectiles from small arms to artillery used to substantiate calculations and examples is alone a valuable reference. The ultimate joy of the book is the incomparable comprehensive set of flow field shadow graphs illustrating the entire spectrum of projectile flight from subsonic, through transonic and supersonic. The volume is a necessary addition to any undergraduate or graduate course in flight dynamics.

It was suggested to the Author, by officers of high rank, that a collection of these and similar examples, in book form, would be of permanent value, not only to the Artillery, but also to the other branches of the service, both regular and militia. A very slight knowledge of mathematics is all that is required for the solution of the most important of the examples. It has come to the Author's knowledge that the first twelve problems have been taught successfully to non-commissioned officers whose whole stock of mathematics consisted of a little arithmetic and less algebra. In the later problems the symbol of integration has been introduced in a few instances - chiefly, however, for the sake of concise definitions. Wherever this symbol occurs it may be passed over without detriment to the practical applications. It is believed that this is the first book of the kind ever published in any language; and the Author trusts that this will excuse whatever faults of arrangement or of execution may be detected by the reader.
