In general, the chapters focus on intermediate- to low-temperature thermochronometry, though some chapters cover higher temperature methods such as monazite U/Pb closure profiles, and the same theory and approaches used in low-temperature thermochronometry are generally applicable to higher temperature systems. The widely used low- to medium-temperature thermochronometric systems are reviewed in detail in these chapters, but while there are numerous chapters reviewing various aspects of the apatite (U-Th)/He system, there is no chapter singularly devoted to it, partly because of several previous reviews recently published on this topic.

Following continental breakup, margin formation and sediment accumulation, tectonics normally relaxes and the margins become passive for millions of years. However, when final convergence is at the gate, the passive days of any ocean and its margins are over or soon will be. The fate of the Mediterranean and Persian Gulf is seemingly known beforehand, as they are nestled in the midst of Africa-Arabia plate convergence with Eurasia. Over millions of years through the Cenozoic era they progressively shriveled, leaving only a glimpse of the Tethys Ocean. Eventually, the basins will adhere to the Alpine-Himalaya orogen and dissipate. This book focuses on a unique stage in the ocean closure process, when significant convergence already induced major deformations, yet the inter-plate basins and margins still record the geological history.

These regions include a) passive margings such as both sides of the Atlantic Ocean; b) narrow rift zones such as East African rift valley, c) large scale continental extension in Basins and Ranges of Western North America, and the Aegean Region of Eastern Europe and Western Asia where extensional tectonics preceded by contractional tectonics. However, there are still many important unexplored questions, which include determining a) evolution of extensional basins; b) the role of strike-slip faulting in extensional processes; c) amount and percentage of cumulative extension in regions experiencing continental extension; d) geometry of extensional features in the middle and lower crust; e) nature of upper mantle and asthenospheric flow; and f) seismic hazards. Many present and ancient extended terrains such as the Basins and Ranges and the Aegean region experienced collisional tectonics preceeding large-scale extension and metamorphic core complex formation. Extension Tectonics and Basin Formation is an attempt to answer a key question in these regions on how this process works. This type of tectonic and petrologic succession may be "normal" for collisional mountain belts due to gravitational collapse of over thickened crust, or, alternatively, extension may be driven by other forcing factors, such as slab roll-back or continental escape.
