Book The Future of Urban Form

Download or read book The Future of Urban Form written by John Brotchie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1985, explores the ways in which the editors and contributors predicted the urban system, shaped by emerging technologies, would look like, both nationally and internationally. The technological changes covered include automation in the secondary sector, the effects of energy price rises and threats of shortage, and substitution effects in the energy and vehicle technology areas. Social and economic factors discussed include unemployment patterns, urban activities and lifestyles and their interactions. This title will be of interest to students of urban studies.

Book Optimal Design of Flexible Manufacturing Systems

Download or read book Optimal Design of Flexible Manufacturing Systems written by Ulrich A.W. Tetzlaff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexible manufacturing systems are complex production systems with considerable high investment costs. This book intends to show the reader how the design of such a system can be optimized. Thereby it addresses the academic world in management science and industrial engineering as well as system planners in industry. First the design problems are analysed in detail and a planning concept is presented. Afterwards possible tools for the design process are described, as there are: mathematical programming, queueing networks, computer simulation, perturbation analysis, petri nets, group technology, and knowledge based systems. The major part of the book, however, concerns the description of existing optimization models based on mathematical programming. Each model is explained and discussed in detail and for new models, developed by the author, numerical examples are given. Finally some distinct guidelines are presented which help the system planners to select the appropriate model for their planning problems.

Book Advances in Computational Intelligence in Transport Logistics and Supply Chain Management

Download or read book Advances in Computational Intelligence in Transport Logistics and Supply Chain Management written by Andreas Fink and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-09-08 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Logistics and supply chain management deal with managing the ?ow of goods or services within a company, from suppliers to customers, and along a supply chain where companies act as suppliers as well as customers. As transportation is at the heart of logistics, the design of tra?c and transportation networks combined with the routing of vehicles and goods on the networks are important and demanding planning tasks. The in?uence of transport, logistics, and s- ply chain management on the modern economy and society has been growing steadily over the last few decades. The worldwide division of labor, the conn- tion of distributed production centers, and the increased mobility of individuals lead to an increased demand for e?cient solutions to logistics and supply chain management problems. On the company level, e?cient and e?ective logistics and supply chain management are of critical importance for a company’s s- cessanditscompetitiveadvantage. Properperformanceofthelogisticsfunctions can contribute both to lower costs and to enhanced customer service. Computational Intelligence (CI) describes a set of methods and tools that often mimic biological or physical principles to solve problems that have been di?cult to solve by classical mathematics. CI embodies neural networks, fuzzy logic, evolutionary computation, local search, and machine learning approaches. Researchersthat workinthis areaoften comefromcomputer science, operations research,or mathematics, as well as from many di?erent engineering disciplines. Popular and successful CI methods for optimization and planning problems are heuristic optimization approaches such as evolutionary algorithms, local search methods, and other types of guided search methods.
