Book Extending Operations and Maximizing Research on the International Space Station

Download or read book Extending Operations and Maximizing Research on the International Space Station written by Jocelyn Lawrence and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2013, the International Space Station (ISS or Station) completed 15 years of continuous operation in low Earth orbit, marking a significant achievement in the history of human spaceflight. Two months later, the Administration announced its intent to extend Station operations until 2024. Originally designed and tested for a 15-year life span, the ISS may now operate for 26 years. NASA continues to utilise the ISS as a research platform to study and mitigate a variety of human health risks that will facilitate long-term exploration missions. However, a major portion of the Station's future success as a research platform hinges on the ability of the Center for the Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS) the group that manages non-NASA research on the portion of the ISS known as the ISS National Laboratory to attract sufficient interest and funding from private users and investors. This book examines the challenges facing NASA in extending ISS operations until 2024. Specifically, it assesses NASA's progress in certifying the Station's structure and hardware for a longer lifespan; cost and schedule estimates associated with the extension; and efforts to increase utilisation of the Station for exploration and other scientific research. Furthermore, this book examines the current level of Station research; CASIS's efforts to facilitate non-NASA research aboard the ISS; and transportation challenges that could hinder full research utilisation of the ISS.

Book Conflict and Collaboration

Download or read book Conflict and Collaboration written by Catherine Gerard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, scholars from different disciplines join together to examine the overlapping domains of conflict and collaboration studies. It examines the relationships between ideas and practices in the fields of conflict resolution and collaboration from multiple disciplinary perspectives. The central theme is that conflict and collaboration can be good, bad, or even benign, depending on a number of factors. These include the role of power, design of the process itself, skill level and intent of the actors, social contexts, and world views. The book demonstrates that various blends of conflict and collaboration can be more or less constructively effective. It discusses specific cases, analytical methods, and interventions, and emphasizes both developing propositions and reflecting on specific cases and contexts. The book concludes with specific policy recommendations for many sets of actors—those in peacebuilding, social movements, governments, and communities—plus students of conflict studies. This book will be of much interest to students, scholars, and practitioners of peace and conflict studies, public administration, sociology, and political science.

Book Microgravity Research in Support of Technologies for the Human Exploration and Development of Space and Planetary Bodies

Download or read book Microgravity Research in Support of Technologies for the Human Exploration and Development of Space and Planetary Bodies written by Committee on Microgravity Research and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-07-17 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The frontier represented by the near solar system confronts humanity with intriguing challenges and opportunities. With the inception of the Human Exploration and Development of Space (HEDS) enterprise in 1995, NASA has acknowledged the opportunities and has accepted the very significant challenges. Microgravity Research in Support of Technologies for the Human Exploration and Development of Space and Planetary Bodies was commissioned by NASA to assist it in coordinating the scientific information relevant to anticipating, identifying, and solving the technical problems that must be addressed throughout the HEDS program over the coming decades. This report assesses scientific and related technological issues facing NASA's Human Exploration and Development of Space endeavor, looking specifically at mission enabling and enhancing technologies which, for development, require an improved understanding of fluid and material behavior in a reduced gravity environment.

Book The International Space Station

Download or read book The International Space Station written by Robert C. Dempsey and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2017 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looks at the operations of the International Space Station from the perspective of the Houston flight control team, under the leadership of NASA's flight directors, who authored the book. The book provides insight into the vast amount of time and energy that these teams devote to the development, planning and integration of a mission before it is executed. The passion and attention to detail of the flight control team members, who are always ready to step up when things do not go well, is a hallmark of NASA human spaceflight operations. With tremendous support from the ISS program office and engineering community, the flight control team has made the International Space Station and the programs before it a success.

Book International Spacer Station

Download or read book International Spacer Station written by Cristina T. Chaplain and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010, after about 25 years of work and the expenditure of billions of dollars, the International Space Station (ISS) will be completed. According to NASA, the ISS crew will then be able to redirect its efforts from assembling the station to conducting research. In 2005, Congress designated the ISS as a national lab.; in addition, NASA is required to provide a research management plan for the ISS National Lab. This report reviewed the research use of the ISS, and: (1) identified how the ISS is being used for research and how it is expected to be used once completed; (2) identified challenges to maximizing ISS research; and (3) identified common management practices at other national lab¿s. and large science programs that could be applicable to the management of the ISS. Book Life and Physical Sciences Research for a New Era of Space Exploration

Download or read book Life and Physical Sciences Research for a New Era of Space Exploration written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-07-23 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In response to requests from Congress, NASA asked the National Research Council to undertake a decadal survey of life and physical sciences in microgravity. Developed in consultation with members of the life and physical sciences communities, the guiding principle for the study is to set an agenda for research for the next decade that will allow the use of the space environment to solve complex problems in life and physical sciences so as to deliver both new knowledge and practical benefits for humankind as we become a spacefaring people. The project's statement of task calls for delivery of two books-an interim report and a final survey report. Although the development of specific recommendations is deferred until the final book, this interim report does attempt to identify programmatic needs and issues to guide near-term decisions that are critical to strengthening the organization and management of life and physical sciences research at NASA.
