Book Transitionale Kunst der Tikar aus Kamerun

Download or read book Transitionale Kunst der Tikar aus Kamerun written by David Zemanek and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2021-03-19 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change of perspective - "artefacts as colonial agents" A white cube for developing new African art. The current publication "Transitional Art of the Tikar from Cameroon" by Dr. David Zemanek, ethnologist and expert on African art adds a new approach to the current restitution debate on traditional African art. So far, the focus recently has been on colonial looting and destruction, as well as the appropriation of the stylistic devices of "primitive art in early 20th century European art" says Dr. David Zemanek in his new book that also caused effects of a stylistic nature in the opposite direction. Without evaluating this change, he uses the Tikar sculptures as an example to show how local artists responded to the increased demand for their carved art by freely combining traditional elements and adding new stylistic features and thus developing a transitional type. These newly created objects - although produced for the art market - have their own sculptural charm, the characteristics of which would not have arisen without the encounter between European and African culture, and which gives the artists behind them a new expression of individuality. Artists could step out of the shadow of their traditional patronage and create new works. We have to rethink the African art market in general, and especially when we are talking about the authenticity of African art and the reception of the western world. Much of the art that is in the African art market now, was made during colonial time for a western audience; the new book of Dr. David Zemanek allows the reader to rediscover the creation of this complex and interesting market.

Her book meticulously reconstructs the multiple ways of artistic knowledge acquisition from the consolidation of the Systme de Grands Frres in the 1970s to the emergence of more discursively oriented small artists initiatives which responded to the growing NGO market of social practice art opportunities in the 2000s. Based on archival research, participant observation and in depth interviews with art practitioners in Douala and Yaound, this study is a must read for everyone who wants to better understand the vibrant artistic scenes in countries like Cameroon, which until today lack a proper state-funded infrastructure in the arts.

Book A History of Art in Africa

Download or read book A History of Art in Africa written by Monica Blackmun Visonà and published by Discontinued 3pd. This book was released on 2001 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Informed by the latest scholarship yet written for the general reader, this is the first comprehensive book to present the arts of Africa in art-historical terms. The authors treat individual pieces as tangible manifestations of changing beliefs and customs, as products of complex cultural interactions, as expressions of historical and economic realities, and as creations of gifted individuals, and in so doing brilliantly offer up African art on its own terms. Organized in five major parts, A History of Art in Africa covers every corner of the continent, including Egypt, from prehistory to the present day and includes the art of the African diaspora. The Islamic influence and the Christian arts of Ethiopia and Nubia are treated as fully African expressions, as are tourist arts and the fascinating hybrid art that periodically arose from interaction with Europe. All art forms are given equal consideration: from such familiar categories as sculpture to such quintessentially African forms as masquerades, festivals, and personal and domestic adornment. The arts of daily life, of royal ceremony, and of state cosmology also receive compelling discussions. And throughout, the authors emphasize the cultural contexts in which art is produced and imbued with meaning. Contemporary art forms are explored both as part of the living splendors of modern Africa and as ingenious responses to the experience of diaspora. The illustrations present a vast and rich range of images, including superb colorplates of artworks, archival and contemporary field photographs, explanatory drawings and plans, and individual objects displayed in museums and in use. Download or read book African Art and Agency in the Workshop written by Sidney Littlefield Kasfir and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of the workshop in the creation of African art is the subject of this revelatory book. In the group setting of the workshop, innovation and imitation collide, artists share ideas and techniques, and creative expression flourishes. African Art and Agency in the Workshop examines the variety of workshops, from those which are politically driven or tourist oriented, to those based on historical patronage or allied to current artistic trends. Fifteen lively essays explore the impact of the workshop on the production of artists such as Zimbabwean stone sculptors, master potters from Cameroon, wood carvers from Nigeria, and others from across the continent.

Since the discovery of African art at the end of the nineteenth century during the colonial expositions it has been a limitless source of inspiration for artists who, over time, have perpetually recreated these artworks. Book Art and Religion in Africa

Download or read book Art and Religion in Africa written by Rosalind Hackett and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1998-10-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Africa's religious and artistic traditions constitute a primary example of its intellectual and cultural vitality. Artistic works play a vital role - especially where oral traditions dominate - in communicating ideas about the relationship between the human, spiritual and natural worlds. This work is a comparative study of Africa's visual and performing arts, concentrating on their geographical, material and gendered diversity, and focusing on the relation of these arts to African religion. The author combines ethnographic and art-historical methodology but does not assume any prior knowledge of African art or African religion. The text seeks a greater understanding of the philosophical and religious aspects of African art, thus challenging western perceptions of what is "important" in terms of artistic representation. This approach reveals the transformative capacities and multi-dimensionality of African art. The work also highlights the changes brought about by Christianity, Islam and the newer religious movements in post-colonial Africa.

Book Culture and Customs of Cameroon

Download or read book Culture and Customs of Cameroon written by John Mukum Mbaku Esq. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2005-06-30 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cameroon, in Central Africa, has been called Africa in miniature. It is characterized by exceptional social and ethnic diversity, with more than 250 ethnicities now forming five major regional-culture groupings. This volume is the first to encapsulate Cameroon's rich indigenous and modern customs and traditions in depth. The narrative emphasizes those aspects that define its modern nation, its peoples, the unique societies, their institutions, and various lifestyles. The origins of Cameroon's diverse culture are traced back to the various ethnic groups and languages as well as the influence of European colonialism, Christianity, Islam, and other external factors, including globalization. In each topical chapter, examples from ethnic groups are presented to give some sense of the variety of experiences. Cameroon has had a turbulent and eventful modern history with German, English, and French incursions, and students and general readers will be able to understand the current struggle for democracy post independence. The history colors the substantial coverage of the many topics examined, from education, to marriage and women's roles, sports, and holidays, daily life, the arts, and much more. This volume will stand as the definitive, accessible introduction to Cameroon and will be essential for building a well-rounded Africa collection.

Book The Cameroonian Novel of English Expression An Introduction

Download or read book The Cameroonian Novel of English Expression An Introduction written by S. A. Ambanasom and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2009 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this eclectic and compelling book, Ambanasom sets out to achieve three primary objectives: to introduce the reader to the extensive body of Cameroonian novels in English, to re-examine the distorting and limiting criteria upon which the critical assessment of the Cameroonian novel in English has so far been based, and to bridge the widening chasm between literary theory and actual critical practice. To achieve these objectives, Ambanasom begins by elaborating an alternative and flexible theoretical framework which he christens the 'Socio-Artistic Approach' and which, according to him, is 'concerned with both a text's thematic, moral, cultural or ideological issues, on the one hand, and its central literary analysis, on the other.' He then proceeds to use this new critical framework to examine twenty-seven major Cameroonian novels in English.
