AD 400, when we find notarii, those trained in shorthand, prominently employed everywhere in state and church. The text reveals in detail how that training could relate to literary Latin and the classical Roman past. The single manuscript of it in our possession descends from a copy that must have been in Anglo-Saxon England by AD 700, and we can see how it was used for the earliest Latin glossary from that context. The edition seeks to make this story accessible both in general and in detail, with copious indices for those who may wish to consult it from various viewpoints: classical and later Latin, linguistic and historical.

The earliest English lexicographers are largely unidentifiable students, teachers, scholars and missionaries. Materials brought from abroad by early teachers were augmented by their teachings and passed on by their students. Lexicographical material deriving from the early Canterbury school remains traceable in glossaries throughout this period, but new material was constantly added. Aldhelm and Ælfric Bata, among others, wrote popular, much studied hermeneutic texts using rare, exotic words, often derived from glossaries, which then contributed to other glossaries. Ælfric of Eynsham is a rare identifiable early English lexicographer, unusual in his lack of interest in hermeneutic vocabulary. The focus is largely on context and the process of creation and intended use of glosses and glossaries. Several articles examine intellectual centres where scholars and texts came together, for example, Theodore and Hadrian in Canterbury; Aldhelm in Malmesbury; Dunstan at Christ Church, Canterbury; Æthelwold in Winchester; King Æthelstan's court; Abingdon; Glastonbury; and Worcester.

At the Sherborne symposium, Katherine Barker commissioned a performance of Aldhelm's Carmen rhythmicum by a rune-singer and an instrumentalist. The large audience at Sherborne were transfixed by the experience of listening, with the text and a translation before them, to a musical recitation and performance of this long Latin poem, which - perhaps for the first time in a thousand years - conveyed something of its emotional power. The rhythms and message of Aldhelm's poem came alive in a remarkable way and readers of this volume can gain much of the same experience by listening to the accompanying CD, with the text and translation of the Carmen rhythmicum before them.

Book excerpt: This volume brings together every catalogue and book-list to survive from the library of Peterborough Abbey, one of the great monastic houses of medieval England. The lists range in date from the tenth-century bequest of Bishop pthelwold of Winchester (the first such record to survive from England) to the select list of titles recorded by John Leland prior to the Dissolution of the Monasteries. A catalogue of the early twelfth century records 61 titles, and may conceivably be a record of what had survived the flames of a disastrous fire in 1116. A long list of abbatial bequests to the library covers the years 1177-1391 and includes the important donation of Abbot Benedict (1177-1193). The chief catalogue to survive is the so-called Matricularium, a peculiar and complicated document of the late fourteenth century, attesting some 347 compendious volumes. Certainly, this number of books can only represent a portion of the collection at the time, but the catalogue remains enormously valuable since it records the many subsidiary titles in each volume instead of merely the first, and allows a small number of surviving manuscripts to be identified as having been at Peterborough. Also included in this volume are texts which relate to the practice of reading in the abbey: the cycle of refectory reading during the liturgical year, and the annual distribution in Lent of books for private reading.
