Book Language Corpus and Empowerment

Download or read book Language Corpus and Empowerment written by Luke Collins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language, Corpus and Empowerment applies a novel corpus-driven approach to the exploration of the concept of empowerment in healthcare. The book proposes an innovative corpus-based methodology for finding evidence of empowerment in language use, using data from a video intervention delivered to families of deaf children, as well as assessing the effects of the intervention on the family. Language, Corpus and Empowerment provides a working definition of empowerment which incorporates concepts from linguistics and learning theory; uses corpus analysis to provide evidence of how video interventions can transform people’s perspectives; examines this new methodology as a potential tool for analysing conversational data longitudinally and at a case-by-case level; demonstrates how a corpus-based methodological approach can be applied in conjunction with other language-based approaches, such as discourse analysis and conversation analysis, to explore the ways in which complex social processes occur in interaction; makes a valuable development in the assessment of the impact of healthcare interventions and the language of empowerment. Insightful and ground-breaking, Language, Corpus and Empowerment is essential reading for anyone undertaking research within corpus linguistics.

Book excerpt: Evidence suggests that Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is an effective intervention leading to positive behaviour change when used with parents and their children. The aim of this paper is to explore the processes of Video Interaction Guidance (VIG). Utilising a case study methodology it explores some of the key processes within the video intervention through in-depth analysis of shared review sessions. It also examines what parents and EPs perceive as significant and helpful within the process of VIG. Results reveal that the interplay between the visual image and the nature and content of discussions appears to be qualitatively different when parents are more actively engaged in video review sessions. Parents perceived the intervention in different ways, which appeared to correspond with their level of engagement in shared review sessions. The limitations of the study and suggestions for future research are discussed and the direct implications are dealt with in the overall conclusion in Paper 2 (pg. 93). Paper 2 aims to evaluate the perceived impact of VIG when used with four parents and their children. Utilising a mixed methods case study methodology, it explores parents' views of their experiences of the video intervention and examines whether any changes are maintained over time. Findings indicate that parents perceived some positive attitudinal and emotional changes. However, it was not clear that any changes were maintained over time and whether they could be solely attributed to the impact of VIG but were perhaps a result of a combination of other factors. A number of common themes emerged across cases that related to barriers and enablers of successful outcomes in VIG as perceived by parents and EPs. The direct implications of this study, suggestions for further research, and for Educational Psychology are discussed.

Book excerpt: There is a growing body of research that shows correlation between family engagement and enhanced student outcomes. Federal legislation regulating special education (notably IDEA, 2004 and ESSA, 2015) has placed an increasing emphasis on family engagement with each iteration. Furthermore, it is commonly understood that family engagement is crucial when a child has a hearing impairment. Recognizing that connection, this study intended to explore the practices that parents of children who are deaf or hearing impaired perceive as facilitative of and obstacles to family engagement in the special education experience. The purpose of the study was to highlight these strategies in an effort to enhance their effectiveness among stakeholders in special education. The conceptual framework was supported by research and included three streams: 1. families of children who are deaf and hearing impaired; 2. home, school, and community engagement; and 3. facilitative practices and obstacles to engagement. The sample population included parents of children who ranged in age from kindergarten to entering college and who participate in hearing support service as their primary special education assignment. A phenomenological approach was taken in examining the shared life experiences of the participants. An initial poll of families of children with hearing loss in a southeastern Pennsylvania regional service agency identified participants who described themselves as having high levels of family engagement. A subset of the participants was invited to participate in one-on-one interviews and to respond to a writing prompt. Interview responses provided thick, rich descriptions of participants' experiences, which were recorded electronically, and then transcribed and analyzed to identify themes. The study revealed that parents value open, two-way communication with educational teams. They seek information, ongoing support for technology, and sustained opportunities to connect with other parents to enhance their funds of knowledge. Findings of this study represent a call to action to promote transformational leadership; necessitating the investment of time, resources, and energy that focus on family engagement as the foundation of all educational endeavors.
