Book excerpt: Within the California K-12 education setting, Latino students make up 53% of the child population, totaling over 3.3. million students (California Department of Education, 2016). Many of these Latino immigrant youth face challenges, including living in poverty, exposure to violence, and acculturation stress, all of which lead to a need for mental health services. However, the literature has shown that 76.9% of Latino immigrant youth who have a mental health need received no services (Toppelberg, Hollinshead, Collins, & Nieto-Castañon, 2013). The K-12 public school setting is responsible for providing the majority of mental health services to Latino immigrant students who do gain access to services (Langley, DeCarlo Santiago, Rodríguez, & Zelaya, 2013). Latino immigrant youth accessing needed mental health services in the school setting in turn highlights the vital role of mental health providers who offer these services to students in K-12 public schools. Utilizing a qualitative multiple case study design, the researcher collected data using a basic demographic questionnaire and indepth interviews with 6 school-based mental health professionals in 5 different Southern California K-12 public school districts. Guided by the theory of cultural competence, the researcher gathered data about personal experiences, training and professional development, and personal needs when working to support Latino immigrant youth in participants’ schools. The current study revealed four major findings. First, mental health professionals stressed the importance of collaboration among all stakeholders—including school staff, community agencies, and students’ families—as a key component of providing necessary and effective services to Latino immigrant youth. Second, mental health professionals identified two-way language barriers with Latino immigrant youth and their families as a major struggle. Third, cultural competency and empathy toward the unique cultural identity of Latino immigrant youth and their families was identified as a significant tool when supporting the mental health of Latino immigrant youth. Fourth, mental health professionals asserted that in their role as therapists of Latino immigrant youth, they require additional training and professional development that incorporates education about cultural assimilation and migration.

Book excerpt: The biggest educational attainment gap between any two groups is seen between English Language Learners (ELL) and non-ELL students. Of ELL students, the largest majority by far are immigrant students. Because school counselors are in a unique position that enables them to provide essential services to promote immigrant students' well-being, development, and success, it is important to explore school counselors' experiences and perceptions of their work. The purpose of this Phenomenological qualitative research study was to explore: (a) school counselors' perceptions of their competencies and what resources they utilize to develop their competencies in working with immigrant students and families, (b) school counselors' beliefs and attitudes toward being a social justice advocate and how these beliefs and attitudes affect their support and services to immigrants, and (c) school counselors' perceptions of their impact on linguistically diverse families' language policies (FLP) and their perceptions of how FLP influences student outcomes. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews from 13 school counselors who work at schools that have five percent or greater of immigrant students in the state of Ohio, in the United States of America. Seven major themes emerged from the data: (1) They feel competent in addressing immigrants' needs and challenges; however, their personal identities and experience impact their self-perceived competence level, (2) they believe that their training did not include counseling immigrants and was not sufficient for working effectively with immigrants, (3) they learn best about how to provide counseling services by willingly and intentionally leaving their comfort zones in order to seek out diverse experiences, (4) they need more professional development, language assistance, and collaboration with key stakeholders to improve their work, (5) The more they learn about immigrant students and families, they develop greater awareness of the individual differences in immigrant populations, as well as begin to develop greater humility about both the knowledge they have gained and how much they still have to learn, (6) social justice is at the heart of their work, and (7) They believe immigrant families should speak their native language with their children, and there was a range of opinions of whether or not FLP impacts student outcomes. In addition to the themes, four paradigms were identified based on the participants' perceptions and experiences in working with immigrant students and families: (1) Superficial Awareness, (2) Growing Awareness, (3) Flexibility (in cognition, affect, behavior), and (4) Culturally Competent School Counselor. Each paradigm is explained based on six domains: awareness/dimensionality, competence, affiliation with social justice advocacy, notion of FLP, involvement with translation, and what they think they need to improve. Findings are discussed in terms of their implications for school counselors, counselor educators, educators, and researchers. Recommendations on how to better prepare school counselors in providing effective and efficient services and support to immigrant students and families are presented.

Book excerpt: Rural communities across the United States are experiencing a rapid increase in the number of immigrant students. While the number of culturally and linguistically diverse students continues to grow within midwestern states, the demographics of teachers remain white, female, and monolingual. Often teachers have little to no training working with students and their families whose backgrounds differ from their own. Thus, there is a great urgency for teachers to develop culturally competent teaching practices that address the needs of all students. The purpose of this year-long, school-based narrative inquiry was to examine the beliefs, attitudes, and practices of rural educators as they described their work with Latinx immigrant, elementary students, negotiated the “space” between a professional and personal identity and demonstrated an ethic of care. This inquiry is arranged into “livings, tellings, retellings, and relivings” (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000, p. 70) and serves to shed light on the entwined lived experiences of myself, my participants, and the community in which we reside. Grounded in Noddings (1984; 2012) work on authentic caring and Valenzuela’s (1999) concept of culture and caring relations for Latinx students, Swanson’s middle range theory of care (1991, 1993) which served as the conceptual framework that illuminated how my participants discussed working with and caring for their Latinx immigrant students. In Struggling to Find Our Way: Rural Educators’ Experiences Working with And Caring for Latinx Immigrant Students, Stephanie Oudghiri’s one-year school-based narrative inquiry is a carefully crafted balance of creativity and rigor with the right notes to engage the reader, challenge them to think, wonder at what they can do, and imagine possibilities for a more socially just education system. In this book, Oudghiri examines the beliefs, attitudes, and practices of two white teachers and one Hispanic paraprofessional working with and caring for immigrant students in a rural Indiana community. Due to the sensitive nature of this inquiry, which focuses on teachers’ relationships with vulnerable populations (immigrant and undocumented), Oudghiri’s book serves as a model for active engagement by creating a strong sense of place, a strong sense of who these teachers and students are, and a strong sense of being in the midst of community and school life. What is unique and compelling about Oudghiri’s writing, is her focus on stories of the teachers working in her school site, and the children in their classrooms. She provides strong evidence using a compassionate lens and the art of storytelling to illuminate lives in the school.

Book excerpt: The mental health symptoms and diagnosis rates of children and adolescents is rising in the United States (Oliver & Abel, 2018). To support the growing mental health rates and offset the work being provided by school counselors, school social workers, and school psychologists, schools are contracting with community mental health agencies to provide mental health counseling services in the school setting (Weist et al., 2017b). For some community mental health agencies, they are opening school based mental health clinics (SBMHCs) to provide more comprehensive mental health counseling services to reduce families having to seek services in their community (Weist et al., 2017b). The providers working in the school setting are licensed mental health professionals including professional counselors or mental health counselors and social workers (Mills & Cunningham, 2017). Prior research explored how school counselors acclimated to the school setting when new to the school community (Matthes, 1992; Curry & Bickmore, 2012;2013), however there is no prior research that explored the acclimation of licensed mental health counselors (LMHCs) within the school setting, including LMHCs working in SBMHCs. This study sought to understand the induction experiences of LMHCs working in SBMHCs located in New York City schools. Drawing from the teacher preparation literature, induction is the process where novice teachers supported and mentored typically at the beginning of their career (Curry & Bickmore, 2012, 2013; DeAngelis Peace, 1995). Utilizing a phenomenological qualitative approach to understanding the LMHCs experiences, nine participants were recruited and shared their induction process across two semi-structured interviews. Data was analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis which allowed for both a descriptive and interpretative understanding of the findings. As a result, the findings yielded six themes and twelve subthemes which are presented from a descriptive and interpretive lens. A discussion of the findings is presented alongside the relevant literature in addition to the strengths and limitations of the study. Recommendations for future research concludes the dissertation.
