Book excerpt: This qualitative study explores the capacity building experiences of principals and district leaders identified as social justice leaders. The study sought to develop an understanding of if, how, and when professional development opportunities for social justice leadership are provided to campus and district leaders. Further, the study sought to identify what types of professional development experiences these leaders envision, including opportunities for collaboration with one another. In order to obtain a deep understanding of the experiences of the participants, the researcher employed the use of grounded theory based on the epistemology of constructionism. The participants in the study included three suburban Texas high school principals and three suburban district administrators. The participants were chosen through a screening process that included recommendations from local social justice leaders. A preliminary survey was used to determine potential participants' foundational understanding of social justice leadership and to identify a group of participants with a similar level of understanding. Data was collected through individual interviews and homogenous focus-group discussions. Participants were also invited to be a part of a collaborative heterogeneous focus-group discussion. Findings indicated that these social justice leaders had a strong desire to continue their learning about social justice leadership as well as to collaborate with one another. Capacity building was personally driven, as it is not prioritized as a need at the district level. In order to grow and develop their own understanding of social justice leadership these leaders accessed hope, courage, and perseverance and found new ways to integrate social justice leadership in their daily work.

Book excerpt: As demographics in urban school districts become increasingly diverse, social justice leadership in the K-12 setting is necessary to meet the needs of all students. Much has been written about social justice leadership at the school principal level, but there is a need to further explore social justice leadership at the superintendent level, with a specific focus on equity and access for all students. A social justice leader is defined as someone that keeps at the center of their practice and vision issues of race, class, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and other historically marginalizing factors. As schools are becoming more diverse, the role of the district leader has evolved from a just a manager of the district to a transformational and social justice leader who recognizes inequities in the systems that are in place and disrupts the status quo. The purpose of this study was to identify the traits and actions of a school district superintendent, perceived to be a social justice leader, and how he addresses equity. To this end, the researcher explored experiences, relationships, actions used by the superintendent to achieve equitable goals, and navigating the politics of a large urban district, while attempting to keep social justice at the forefront of every decision made. Therefore, the researcher followed a constructionist epistemology with a qualitative research case study approach. Data was collected, coded, and categorized following an inductive process. The use of multiple sources of data allowed for the triangulation of that data. The intent was to develop emerging themes that surfaced from the data analysis. Findings revealed that the superintendent, perceived to be a social justice leader, exemplifies the traits of being culturally competent, equity driven, and inclusive of all students; carries out actions such as making equitable organizational changes and courageous decision making; uses the strategies of relational leadership and a whole child education; and draws on personal and professional experiences as a foundation that drives his work as a social justice leader. Collectively these traits, actions, strategies and experiences resulted in changes at the district level, which in turn contributed to the progress the district made in creating a more equitable system for all students.

Book excerpt: School districts are experiencing increasing economic, racial, ethnic, linguistic, gender and sexuality, cultural diversity across the United States and globally. With increasing diversity and persistent social inequities widening (National Center for Educational Statistics, 2019; U.S. Census Data, 2018), educational leaders face immense challenges and must actively work to build an equitable, healthy school climate. Educational leaders are critical for ensuring positive student outcomes and success, but often report feeling inadequately prepared for current challenges (Coalition for Teacher Equality, 2016; Jordan, 2012; Miller, 2013; Mitani, 2018; Papa, 2007). Unfortunately, growing challenges are contributing to high school administrator turnover rates and shortages (Gates et al., 2006; Jacob et al., 2015; Mordechay & Orfield, 2017) as well as perpetuating social inequities among preK-12 students instead of dismantling them (Beckett, 2018; Fuller, 2012; Manna, 2015; Rangel, 2018; Shankar-Brown, 2015). A research study by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and the Learning Policy Institute (LPI) reveals that public schools with higher percentages of low-income students and students of color are more likely to experience administrative and teacher turnover, which compounds equity issues affecting already vulnerable students (Levin and Bradley, 2019). This book provides educational leaders with a deeper understanding of equity-focused and inclusive leadership practices, while offering intersectional views on social inequalities and stark reminders of the work still ahead. Book excerpt: This qualitative study explores how principals who are leaders for social justice in rural high schools perceive student diversity, specifically lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) students, and if, how, and why they support all students through the establishment of a socially just school climate. Additionally, the study investigates how the context of the schools, specifically rural communities with conservative values, affects principals' perceptions and implementation of a positive climate for all students. This study offers modifications to Theoharis' (2007, 2009) social justice leadership theory and extends Theoharis' (2007) model of resistance, offering insight into how rural school communities reflect a unique context for examining equity constraints. The study's findings suggest that these leaders, despite their social justice orientations, upheld community normative values and did not perceive bias against LGBTQ students.
