Download or read book Exploring the Leadership Practices of Principals of Blue Ribbon Schools written by Scotty Allen Van Worth and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive study was to explore how the leadership behaviors and characteristics of principals contributed to the achievement of the Blue Ribbon Award in schools in Oklahoma during the 2012-2013 school year. The theoretical foundation and conceptual model of this study is comprised of servant leadership and Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning0́9s (McREL) Balanced Leadership Model. Robert Greenleaf coined the term to describe the style employed by leaders who focus on developing others instead of satisfying their own need for power. Six research questions guided this study with the goal of understanding the perceptions of five highly effective Blue Ribbon Principals regarding servant leadership, the influence of accountability requirements on leading, instruction, and learning, the principal0́9s role contributing to the success of his Blue Ribbon school, their roles in advancing the mission, program, and positive school climate, and their collaborative shared leadership practices to earning the Blue Ribbon designation. Sources of data included interviews with five principals, the Organizational Leadership Assessment (OLA) survey taken by 27 teachers, and the Blue Ribbon Applications for each school. Through these sources, the researcher discovered that all the Blue Ribbon principals included in this study believed they were servant leaders and displayed three servant leadership characteristics; listening, committing to the growth of teachers, and building community. The practical implications of this research are that other school leaders can learn and possibly benefit from the experience of these highly successful principals.

Book The Influence of Integrated Leadership in United States Title I National Blue Ribbon Elementary Schools in 2012

Download or read book The Influence of Integrated Leadership in United States Title I National Blue Ribbon Elementary Schools in 2012 written by Virginia L. Neely and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the gap between affluent and disadvantaged schools continues to widen, students throughout the United States experience unequal school settings. Leadership can be used to develop education as the greatest equalizer. School accountability pressure and increased demands require qualified and succinct leadership. The analysis of characteristics of successful schools staffs can be used to develop a model of practice for school leaders to utilize for organizational improvement. The majority of previous school leadership studies show the examination of a single type of leadership. One leadership style that integrates two main forms of leadership would better serve our school principals and allow school leaders to develop an environment that efficiently meets the needs of school children, leaders, and teachers. The research questions were centered on the examination of characteristics from the following leadership styles: transformational, instructional, and integrated. For this study, integrated leadership is the combination of transformational and instructional leadership. The purpose of this study was to understand the integrated leadership characteristics of the 2012 Title I Elementary National Blue Ribbon Schools. Qualitative document analysis was used in the exploration of the applications from the schools. The applications were coded for themes based on the theoretical framework of this study. The results of this study show that integrated leadership is implemented through a variety of ways specific to the site-based needs of each campus. The majority of schools in this study use integrated leadership. Implications for practice and further recommendations are presented for school leaders. The schools in this study can be used to understand how schools in any socio-economic setting can create an environment and school culture to find success for students, leaders and teachers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparing Principals for a Changing World provides a hands-on resource for creating and implementing effective policies and programs for developing expert school leaders. Written by acclaimed author and educator Linda Darling-Hammond and experts Debra Meyerson, Michelle LaPointe, and Margaret Terry Orr, this important book examines the characteristics of successful educational leadership programs and offers concrete recommendations to improve programs nationwide. In a study funded by the Wallace Foundation, Darling-Hammond and the team examined eight exemplary principal development programs, as well as state policies and principals' experiences across the country. Using the data from the study, they reveal how successful programs are structured, the skills and knowledge participants gain, and what they are able to do in practice as school leaders as a result. What do these exemplary programs have in common? Aggressive recruitment; close ties with schools in the community; on-the-ground training under the wing of expert principals, and a strong emphasis on the cutting-edge theories of instructional and transformational leadership. In addition to highlighting the programs' similarities, the study also explains the differences among the programs and sheds light on the effectiveness of approaches and models from different states and contexts?East, West, North, and South; urban and rural; pre-service and in-service. The authors analyze program outcomes for principals and their schools, including illustrative case studies and educators' voices on the influence of programs' strategies for recruitment, internships, mentoring, and coursework. The ideas and suggestions outlined in Preparing Principals for a Changing World are presented with the goal of increasing the number of highly qualified, thoughtful, and innovative educational leaders.

Book An Exploration of Connections Between a Principal s Leadership Style and the Academic Achievement Gap

Download or read book An Exploration of Connections Between a Principal s Leadership Style and the Academic Achievement Gap written by Khalid Almasnaah and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative study explored possible connections between school principals' leadership styles and behaviors and closing the student achievement gap at three schools serving high poverty student populations. Two of the three schools were high schools designated as Priority Schools in 2012 as a result of student achievement that ranked in the bottom 5% of all Michigan schools. The two schools managed to exit the Priority designation in 2017 after implementing school culture and instruction reforms that improved student achievement. The third school was a K-8, which was not designated as a Priority School. It had the same student demographics as the Priority Schools, and it is located in the same district as one of them. It was added to the study to reinforce the data. The researcher conducted 17 interviews. A bottom-up inductive coding approach was adopted for the qualitative data analysis. The researcher assigned emerging themes specific and meaningful codes relevant to the topic and purpose of the study. Based on the data from the three schools, a possible connection between school leadership and closing the student achievement gap was found. The three principals adopted practices and behaviors relevant to multiple leadership styles. They did not limit themselves to only one leadership style or a set of behaviors. The two Priority School principals had to undo the negative impact of the former toxic culture. The three principals instituted a positive school culture based on trust, respect, collaboration, and accountability. They indirectly impacted student achievement by improving the schools' culture and climate and enhancing the curriculum, instruction, assessment, and data-driven interventions. They worked with all the stakeholders to align and streamline all the efforts and programs into well-coordinated plans and established common language and practices regarding teaching and learning. They involved all the teachers in the decision making about teaching and learning.
