Book Southern California Beaches

    Book Details:
  • Author : Victoria Scotti (Graduate student)
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2021
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 156 pages

Download or read book Southern California Beaches written by Victoria Scotti (Graduate student) and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study utilizes a holistic, ethnographic approach to explore beach use in Southern California by highlighting the experiences and views of surfers, the local fishing community, and divers, with special attention paid to those who utilize and have attachment to County Line Beach, Los Angeles. This project began as a traditional ethnography, with the original research design including participant observation, transect walks, mapping, and behavioral observation, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the research instead ultimately relied on survey and interview that could be conducted over the Internet, thus limiting access to all users of the coast. Additional data in the form of public posts and comments were collected through several social media websites including Facebook and Reddit. The data collected sheds light on stakeholder interactions and groups' attachments to beaches in Southern California, and what originally began as an assumption that crowded and well-utilized beaches such as County Line Beach in Los Angeles would breed resentment, conflict, and competition between users was ultimately not demonstrated throughout this project. It appears, despite all of the possibilities for conflicts and contentions at beaches in Southern California between surfers, bikers, fishermen and women, environmentalists and preservationists, tourists, beach-goers, and others vying for space, the social relationships at the beaches are relatively constructive, with constituents describing overarching feelings of respect, empathy, and appreciation for other people using the space. Using a mixed-methods design, data were collected through surveys and semi-structured interviews between June and September 2020, in order to home in on local users' experiences at the beach and with external stakeholders, such as policy makers, as well as those within their own group. This thesis uses grounded theory and provides commentary on environmental initiatives, increasing privatization of public areas, and the uniquely robust culture of Southern California beaches by exploring answers to the main question of how local community members are using beaches in Southern California.
