Book Routledge History of Philosophy Volume I

Download or read book Routledge History of Philosophy Volume I written by C. C. W. Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of the Routledge History of Philosophy covers one of the most remarkable periods in human thought. In the space of two and a half centuries, philosophy developed from quasi-mythological speculation to a state in which many of the most fundamental questions about the universe, the mind and human conduct had been vigorously pursued, and some of the most enduring masterworks of Western thought had been written. The essays present the fundamental approaches and thinkers of Greek philosophy in chronological order. Each is written by a recognised authority in the particular field, and takes account of the large amount of high-quality work done in the last few decades on Platonic and pre-Platonic philosophy. All write in an accessible style, meeting the needs of the non-specialist without loss of scholarly precision. Topics covered range from early Greek speculative thought, its cultural and social setting, to the Sophists, Socrates and culminate in three chapters on Plato's lasting contribution to all central areas of philosophy. Supplemented with a chronology, a glossary of technical terms and an extensive bibliography, this volume will prove an invaluable and comprehensive guide to the beginnings of philosophy.

But there has been no comprehensive history of this great intellectual journey since 1945. Intelligible for students and eye-opening for philosophy readers, A. C. Grayling covers with characteristic clarity and elegance subjects like epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, logic, and the philosophy of mind, as well as the history of debates in these areas, through the ideas of celebrated philosophers as well as less well-known influential thinkers. The History of Philosophy takes the reader on a journey from the age of the Buddha, Confucius and Socrates. Through Christianity's dominance of the European mind to the Renaissance and Enlightenment. On to Mill, Nietzsche, Sartre, then the philosophical traditions of India, China and the Persian-Arabic world. And finally, into philosophy today.

Book A History of Philosophy

Download or read book A History of Philosophy written by Wilhelm Windelband and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-05-22 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was a classic in philosophy - as well as in the history of philosophy - when it first appeared, and it continues to be so today. Instead of enumerating the opinions of individual philosophers or the contrasting dogmas of philosophical schools, it shows in a brilliant way the life of philosophical thought from century to century, its connection with the social and intellectual situation of the different periods, its inner tensions, its growth and decay, and, above all, the fruits of philosophical endeavor for Western civilization in all its expressions. Paul Tillich One or another recent book may be breezier or more frolicsome. But Windelband is a just and clear guide. And the reader of his 'History' who decides to examine the original writings of the great philosophers themselves will be enriched for having been introduced to them by Windelband. Justus Buchler

Book Michael Oakeshott and the Cambridge School on the History of Political Thought

Download or read book Michael Oakeshott and the Cambridge School on the History of Political Thought written by Martyn P. Thompson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a critique of Cambridge School Historical Contextualism as the currently dominant mode of history of political thought, drawing upon Michael Oakeshott’s analysis of the logic of historical enquiry. While acknowledging that the early Cambridge School work represented a considerable advance towards genuinely historical histories of political thought, this work identifies two major historiographical problems that have become increasingly acute. The first is general: an insufficiently rigorous understanding of the key concept of "pastness" necessarily presupposed in historical enquiry of all kinds. The second is specific to histories of political thought: a failure to do justice to the varieties of past political thinking, especially differences between ideology and philosophy. In addressing these problems, the author offers a comprehensive account of the history of political thought that establishes the parameters not just of histories of ideological thinking but also of the much disputed character of histories of political philosophy. Since rethinking history of political thought in Oakeshottian terms requires resisting current pressures to turn history into the servant of currently felt needs, the book offers a sustained defence of the cultural value of modernist historical enquiry against its opponents. An important work for political theorists, historians of political thought and those researching intellectual history, the philosophy of history and proposed new directions in contemporary historical studies.
