Book Exploring the Status and Teachers Perceptions of Technology Integration in EFL Classrooms at Chadli Bendjedid University Algeria

Download or read book Exploring the Status and Teachers Perceptions of Technology Integration in EFL Classrooms at Chadli Bendjedid University Algeria written by Ladaci Naima and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the realm of language education, technology has reshaped the state of the teaching/learning framework in different ways and there is no surprise how a number of classes around the world have now turned from chalk and board classes to technology-based ones. However, whether teachers adopt or reject technology in their teaching depends primarily on the way they perceive it. Consequently, the current paper intends to capture the various perceptions of English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers from the department of English at Chadli Bendjedid University, El Tarf (Algeria) towards the use and the integration of technology in their teaching practices. It also aspires to answer the question: to what extent is technology used in their teaching? In order to collect data for this study; a questionnaire was administered to ten teachers from the above-cited department. Although the findings revealed that all the participants have a positive attitude towards technology; they all face different barriers that impede them from integrating it.

Book English Education in Oman

Download or read book English Education in Oman written by Rahma Al-Mahrooqi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores an area that has been somewhat overlooked in the literature to date – the current status and future trends of English education in Oman. It offers a variety of theoretical and methodological approaches to the subject and explores areas of English education in Oman that have, until now, been little investigated. It explores these issues from a variety of perspectives: the professionalization of English teachers in the country; the implementation of novel teaching methodologies, curricula, and assessment approaches, into what are, in many ways, still very traditional education settings; the integration of learner identity into English language instruction; country- and culture-specific concerns with conducting research with Omani participants; the strategic demands of building stronger links between education and workforce needs; and developing learner autonomy and motivation.

Book Exploring Egyptian EFL Teachers Perceptions of Teacher Leadership

Download or read book Exploring Egyptian EFL Teachers Perceptions of Teacher Leadership written by Amira Salama and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The current study is an attempt to understand how the Egyptian English as-a-foreign-language (EFL) teachers perceive the concept of teacher leadership, a topic that has not received considerable attention in the educational leadership literature in this context. Teacher leadership is regarded as an important practice for school reform. In Egypt, language teachers struggle to find their own voices and meet the challenges of the job inside and outside the classroom. Attempts at school and education reform often disregard teachers’ understanding and application of new policies. This may result in the failure of these attempts since teachers are well-versed in school complexities and have the tools to implement change on the ground. These challenging realities of teaching make it imperative to investigate how EFL teachers perceive the concept of teacher leadership, examine what factors may influence these perceptions and provide suggestions to foster teacher leadership in schools. Adopting the teacher leadership definition of Katzenmeyer and Moller (2009), this study used a questionnaire and interviews to collect data on teacher leadership perceptions. The results of the study showed that Egyptian EFL teachers perceive teacher leadership mainly in terms of excellent teaching and effective interaction among themselves. Some differences in perceptions were found to be linked to teachers’ years of experience, their involvement in professional development activities, their geographical locations and gender. School administrators’ support was also found to be important in influencing how teachers practice leadership in their schools. In light of the study results, it appears that professional teacher associations and education stakeholders need to provide support to teachers to guide them towards a more comprehensive understanding of leadership and encourage them to demonstrate their leadership skills in schools for education reform to be effective. EFL classroom teachers as well need to be more proactive in preparing themselves for a leading role outside the classroom. Teachers should seek professional development and persistently work for creating opportunities to build their professional communities beyond the walls of the classroom. Teacher leadership is, as emphasized in the current study, a result of the collective efforts of everyone involved.

Book Communities of Practice

Download or read book Communities of Practice written by Jacquie McDonald and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-14 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book about communities of practice in the international, higher education sector, the authors articulate the theoretical foundations of communities of practice (CoPs), research into their application in higher education, leadership roles and how CoPs sustain and support professional learning. Research demonstrates that communities of practice build professional and personal links both within and across faculty, student services and administrative and support units. This book describes how community of practice members may be physically co-located and how social media can be used to connect members across geographically diverse locations. It positions higher education communities of practice within the broader community of practice and social learning literature, and articulates the importance of community of practice leadership roles, and the growing focus on the use of social media for community of practice implementation. The multiple perspectives provide higher education leaders, academic and professional staff with the means to establish, or reflect on existing CoPs, by sharing insights and critical reflections on their implementation strategies, practical guidelines and ideas on how community of practice’s theoretical underpinnings can be tailored to the higher education context.

Book Analyzing EFL Teachers Technology Preparedness to Promote Call in Indonesia

Download or read book Analyzing EFL Teachers Technology Preparedness to Promote Call in Indonesia written by Eugenie Mainake and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, technology has played a significant role in English language teaching. Current Indonesian policies in education encourage teachers to integrate technology into teaching and learning activities to bolster the effectiveness and efficiency of their teaching practice (Ministry of National Education Indonesia, 2013). Previous studies found that various technology-based pedagogies yielded rewarding results for learners' language skills in Indonesia, yet teachers report a lack of skills and knowledge necessary for CALL (Computer Assisted Language Learning) integration (Cahyani & Cahyono, 2012; Ridwan, 2017). There are, however, limited studies examining teachers' readiness and skills to implement technology use in their classroom instructions. Therefore, the present study investigates teachers' technological skills to implement CALL-based English as Foreign Language (EFL) instructions, particularly in Maluku, Indonesia using the TPACK (Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge) Framework (Koehler & Mishra, 2006). EFL high school teachers (N=43) from Maluku, Indonesia participated in the study. The data were collected using an online TPACK survey (Schmidt et al, 2009; Sahin, 2011) and follow-up interviews (Nila, 2013). The teachers showed interest and awareness of the use of technology to facilitate efficient and effective EFL instruction. The majority of participants demonstrated their perceived understanding of utilizing and combining technology with their pedagogical practices. Further, the interviews uncovered the fact that a handful of technology tools were already employed to improve students' practice of English inside and beyond classrooms. These findings shed light on the reality that Indonesian EFL teachers are prepared to enact CALL. Nevertheless, participants encountered challenges for effective enactment of CALL-based EFL instruction such as a lack of CALL training and accessible technology to facilitate learning. The findings then suggest a need for training modules for technology incorporation in ELT, quality school facilities, and assistance in developing technology based EFL teaching.

Book Exploring English Instructors Perceptions and Actual Practices Regarding the Strategies Used in Teaching and Assessing Writing in Three Tertiary Education Institutions in the Sultanate of Oman

Download or read book Exploring English Instructors Perceptions and Actual Practices Regarding the Strategies Used in Teaching and Assessing Writing in Three Tertiary Education Institutions in the Sultanate of Oman written by Noura Abdullah Hamed Azani and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions and practices of ESL/EFL instructors in teaching and assessing writing in three tertiary educational institutions in the Sultanate of Oman (Al Buraimi University College, University of Buraimi, and Sohar University). The researcher used the quantitative and qualitative methods in the study. The data was gathered through a questionnaire (n=147), 15 interviews (n=15), and 18 classroom observations (n=10). The findings of this study revealed that the majority of ESL/EFL instructors believe in and practice aspects of the process- and product-oriented approaches for teaching academic writing in Oman. Many ESL/EFL instructors believe in teaching vocabulary that students may use in their assigned writing and equally they believe in teaching students different genres and/or texts. Other common strategies that ESL/EFL instructors agreed on were generating ideas about the assigned topic before the start of the task and asking students to make a pre-writing plan. ESL/EFL instructors do believe in portfolios and written essays as tools to assess students writing, which are also practiced in their classroom. However, their belief contradicted their practice in areas like: making students write individually or in group, or both; using analytic or holistic rubrics, or both; and assessing content or grammar first, or both. One of the main recommendations that the researcher addressed to the ESL/EFL instructors is that their choices of writing strategies should be based on students' needs. There should be a balance between the students need to meet the learning outcomes and helping students to communicate creatively in English. This is by vii replacing the traditional exams with more creative and authentic process of writing. Also, the researcher addressed the Omani institutions of Higher Education to keep the writing classes manageable for ESL/EFL writing instructors. Furthermore, the researcher recommended that the learning outcomes must not only be idealistic, but also realistic. The standards for evaluation must be accessible for the ESL/EFL students in Omani Colleges and Universities. They must be challenging without being off-putting. The last recommendation was addressed to Omani researchers who are led by the Sultan Qaboos University, to set up a national, updated and comprehensive database.

Book Identity and Technology Integration in an EFL Context

Download or read book Identity and Technology Integration in an EFL Context written by Alia Emara and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization and the advent of technology have compelled many Egyptians to master the English language to participate in an increasingly competitive knowledgecentered global economy. Therefore, the demand for English language classes has been increasing in Egypt in recent years. However, English language classes alone may not guarantee that learners become technologically competent to master 21st century skills. Therefore, one purpose of this qualitative case study is to examine how Egyptian EFL teachers and Egyptian EFL adult learners utilize technology and digital resources in teaching and learning English to promote autonomous learning and 21st century skills. The study also explores the participants' attitudes towards technology integration in the classroom and the growing importance of digital and multimodal literacies. Because the English language has played an important role in the Egyptian culture since the 1950s, its mastery is part and parcel of their identity formation as Egyptians and users of the language. Being aware of this role, the study explores how the participants perceive the English language in Egypt and how they construct their identities as English language speakers. Because there is a connection between language and technological practices (Warschauer, 2002), the study also investigates how the participants perceive themselves as users of technology to teach or learn English. Participants are 4 EFL Egyptian teachers and 3 EFL adult Egyptian learners. The study was conducted in an adult language center in Alexandria, Egypt. Data was collected through semi structured interviews and field notes. Findings indicate that social media sites and visual tech are the most common technological practices among teachers and learners. The use of the English language was indexical for power and prestige and had significant implications for how the participants constructed their identities as users of English and technology.

Book International Handbook of Teacher Quality and Policy

Download or read book International Handbook of Teacher Quality and Policy written by Motoko Akiba and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-01 with total page 880 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Handbook of Teacher Quality and Policy is a comprehensive resource that examines how teacher quality is conceptualized, negotiated, and contested, and teacher policies are developed and implemented by global, national, and local policy actors. Edited by two of the leading comparative authorities in the field, it draws on the research and contributions of scholars from across the globe to explore five central questions: How has teacher quality been conceptualized from various disciplinary and theoretical perspectives? How are global and transnational policy actors and networks influencing teacher policies and practices? What are the perspectives and experiences of teachers in local policy contexts? What do comparative research studies tell us about teachers and how their work and policy contexts influence their teaching? How have various countries implemented policies aimed at improving teacher quality and how have these policies influenced teachers and students? The international contributors represent a wide variety of scholars who identify global dynamics influencing policy discourses on teacher quality, and examine national and local teaching and policy environments influencing teacher policy development and implementation in various countries. Divided into five sections, the book brings together the latest conceptual and empirical studies on teacher quality and teacher policies to inform future policy directions for recruiting, educating, and supporting the teaching profession.
