Book The Changing Identity of Rural India

Download or read book The Changing Identity of Rural India written by Elisabetta Basile and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the pattern of rural development in contemporary India from a multidisciplinary and historical perspective. The essays overcome the limits of disciplinary approaches to provide a comprehensive analysis of the processes of change and growth at work in the Indian countryside and to review the social and cultural dynamics that have led to the contemporary situation. Providing an analysis of the economic, political and social changes experienced in rural India, they examine the interactions between actors and institutions at different levels. Some contributions focus on the impact of state policies on rural development and on the rationale of capitalistic expansion in the Indian countryside, while others analyse how the changes are promoted, adopted and resisted at the local level. The general issue raised in the book refers to the assessment of the nature and working of contemporary Indian rural economy. In order to analyse the complexity of the rural economy and the forms it takes in different Indian contexts, this issue has been deconstructed considering, in turn, the process of rural change, the impact of rural growth on working and living conditions, and finally the categories of the inhabitants of rural areas and the construction of their identities in colonial and post-colonial rural India.

Book India s Villages in the 21st Century

Download or read book India s Villages in the 21st Century written by Surinder S. Jodhka and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post India’s economic liberalization in the 1990s, the village ceased to be central to ongoing sociological concerns. As a result, the period saw a marginalization of rural life and agrarian economy in the national imagination. However, in the 21st century as India transforms, so does its rural life. This book revisits the realities of contemporary rural India, exploring the trajectories of change across regions such as those in rural economies, the relationship of villages to the outside world, and the dynamics of caste inequalities. The volume puts together 14 papers based on empirical studies carried out by sociologists, social anthropologists, and economists over the past 15 years to begin a holistic conversation on contemporary rural India which continues to be an important site of social, political, and economic activities. India’s Villages in the 21st Century stresses diversity as a fundamental structure of Indian economy and society and illustrates the point by focusing on the economies, patterns of settlements, and organization of social and political life in India’s villages.

Book Rural India and Peasantry in Hindi Stories

Download or read book Rural India and Peasantry in Hindi Stories written by Vanashree Tripathi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rural narratives after Premchand remained unnoticed because of not being written in English. Rural India and Peasantry: Ethnography in stories after Premchand is a study of literary representation of rural life in a vast expanse of land designated as the Hindi Heartland. What lends unique strength to this work is that after Premchand, fictional narrative has not really been dealt with such scholarly seriousness or contextualized in the socio-economic scenario of the rural world and peasantry. More than thirty stories discussed in ten chapters, inherit a strong tradition of peasant narratives since the times of Premchand, exposing the reader to an intricate array of messy complications and contingencies, the small peasantry and the rural world has experienced since the early decades of independent India through the period of liberalization till the recent decades. Exploring non- canonical rural stories in Hindi, unfolds a spectrum of ethnic-cultural and psychological biographies about the evolving rural scenario in the democratic India of our times. The substantial reference to concrete facts and data vindicate the realistic strain of the work. It would set a new example of interdisciplinary scholarship and open up new vistas of further scholarship, especially in the Cultural studies. The authentically translated excerpts, transcribe the spirit of rural India.

Book The Rural Urban Nexus in India s Economic Transformation

Download or read book The Rural Urban Nexus in India s Economic Transformation written by Tsukasa Mizushima and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes and analyzes the transformation of Indian economy taking into account historical changes and present dynamics of the rural-urban nexus. India has recently experienced a period as a high-performing economy, with the great improvement of indices of human development, including literacy rates, life expectancy, child mortality rates and others. In contrast to this bright outlook, features such as the retarded growth of women’s average height, the noticeable gap between male and female population, the overwhelming proportion of informal employment in the manufacturing sector, or increasing pollution overshadow India’s future, in some cases pose a threat to lifestyle and environment. Examining the rural–urban nexus where the new transformative dynamics of Indian socio-economy is most conspicuous, the contributors to this book shed light on the actual changes taking place at the bottom of Indian society through regional comparisons and spatial differentiation. The book offers unique perspectives on the topic produced mostly by Japanese scholars, including analysis of original data, that have hitherto been unavailable and inaccessible to an international audience. As the first book published on the rural–urban nexus in India, this book will be of interest to researchers studying South Asian History, Economics, Politics, Geography, Sociology and Anthropology, Development Studies and Economic History.
