Book Sexual Outsiders Understanding BDSM Sexualities and Communities

Download or read book Sexual Outsiders Understanding BDSM Sexualities and Communities written by David M. Ortmann and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual Outsiders: Understanding BDSM Sexualities and Communities delves into the unique experiences of individuals in BDSM communities. While misunderstandings surrounding these communities prevail, BDSM sexuality cuts across race, gender, nationality, and sexual orientation. BDSM describes forms of sexuality that incorporate restraint, pressure, sensation, training, and elements of both erotic and non-erotic power exchange between the engaged parties. Some BDSM “scenes” include role-playing, spanking, blindfolds, ropes, and erotic costuming. Sexual Outsiders is designed as a guide for BDSM community members who must wade through the quagmire of unique problems they face: coming out to family, friends and partners; distinguishing abusive relationships from healthy consensual ones; finding and developing community; overcoming shame and denial; exploring whether BDSM sexuality can be a healing tool; gaining access to quality, culturally competent psychotherapy; and finding strategies to develop a healthy sexual self-esteem in the face of current medical and social standards that view them as sick or pathological. The book also serves as an educational primer for those whose partners, friends, and family members are involved in BDSM. In terms of challenges faced by BDSM communities, the most significant is living with a stigmatized sexuality shame, prejudice, discrimination, isolation, depression, and a lack of adequate, competent mental health care. Issues such as coming out as a sexual minority, finding community and partners, and dealing with scenes and relationships that go wrong are some the common experiences shared by members of BDSM communities. Sexual Outsiders employs common sense, good humor, and vivid anecdotes while incorporating basic ideas about human behavior, psychology, philosophy, interviews, history, and clinical case studies to illustrate the real lives and experiences of men and women in BDSM communities. Anyone wanting to learn more about this unique, and more-common-than-you-think expression of sexuality, will find in these pages insight into the various challenges BDSM practitioners face, and the many strengths that people in the BDSM communities have developed in the face of social stigma and prejudice.

Book Thinking Kink

  • Publisher : McFarland

  • Pages : 229 pages

Download or read book Thinking Kink written by Catherine Scott and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the mildly kink-themed trilogy 50 Shades of Grey became popular reading in 2012, the media speculated that feminism was in reverse, as the public went mad over bondage and discipline, domination and submission and sadomasochism (BDSM). The novels provoked academic debate about BDSM and the issues it raises for feminists. Is the female dominant truly powerful or is she just another objectified body? Does lesbian BDSM avoid the problematic nature of heterosexual kink, or is it actually more subject to the "male gaze" of feminist theory? And what is it about kink that has creators of pop culture--from Anne Rice to the producers of Scrubs--using it to attract audiences? Examining the tropes of kink in books, TV shows, film and the music industry, this work addresses these and other questions that depictions of BDSM raise for the feminist audience. The author interweaves her own research and experiences in the BDSM scene with the subculture's portrayal in the media. Book Medical Bondage

Download or read book Medical Bondage written by Deirdre Cooper Owens and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accomplishments of pioneering doctors such as John Peter Mettauer, James Marion Sims, and Nathan Bozeman are well documented. It is also no secret that these nineteenth-century gynecologists performed experimental caesarean sections, ovariotomies, and obstetric fistula repairs primarily on poor and powerless women. Medical Bondage breaks new ground by exploring how and why physicians denied these women their full humanity yet valued them as “medical superbodies” highly suited for medical experimentation. In Medical Bondage, Cooper Owens examines a wide range of scientific literature and less formal communications in which gynecologists created and disseminated medical fictions about their patients, such as their belief that black enslaved women could withstand pain better than white “ladies.” Even as they were advancing medicine, these doctors were legitimizing, for decades to come, groundless theories related to whiteness and blackness, men and women, and the inferiority of other races or nationalities. Medical Bondage moves between southern plantations and northern urban centers to reveal how nineteenth-century American ideas about race, health, and status influenced doctor-patient relationships in sites of healing like slave cabins, medical colleges, and hospitals. It also retells the story of black enslaved women and of Irish immigrant women from the perspective of these exploited groups and thus restores for us a picture of their lives.

Book excerpt: "The other day my girlfriend pushed me down and looked me in the eye. 'I'm going to make you cry, ' she said. She began to hit me in earnest, and made me count the blows." Why would we ever want someone we love to hurt us? Why would we ever want to hurt someone we love? And why do some of us crave it? "Later, as I sobbed and she held me, I felt the therapy of that release: the effect of dealing with PTSD and trauma with pain that I can end any time by saying my safe word. Pain that comes from someone who I know is doing it for both of our pleasure, and not out of a desire to actually hurt me." Julie brown, a queer trans woman, shared this anecdote with me after responding to my call for personal stories about BDSM. Over the past week, I've conducted interviews with a dozen members of the BDSM and kink community, ranging across identities, age, gender, and location. By now, the general mechanics of BDSM are familiar to anyone who's had even a passing encounter with Fifty Shades of Grey-the whips, crops, and handcuffs all recognizable accoutrement of kinky sex-but I was interested in exploring the personal, psychological side. BDSM is an acronym with several constituent parts: bondage and discipline, dominance/submission, sadism and masochism. Collectively, these behaviors might be referred to as aspects of kink, a term which covers the broad expanse of non-normative sexuality. It includes BDSM; it can also encompass things like watersports and various fetishes, like latex or balloons. I use "we" when referring to this community because I find myself a member of it, though, like any imagined community, membership is as much self-designated as it is given. I'm interested in BDSM. In particular, I like submission. I've explored rope bondage, been to play parties, and incorporated it into many of my romantic and sexual relationships. For julie, the appeal lies in how it allows her to access pain while being in full control of that pain-she can end it at any time with her safe word. BDSM allows her to process complex, traumatic experiences in a way that's safe and consensual. Her story resonated with my own experiences with BDSM, too: trusting a beloved partner to give me what I need, while knowing that I'm in full control of the situation, is exhilarating. Is that feeling universal? If you've ever fantasized about getting kinky in the bedroom, you're not alone. The runaway success of E. L. James's novel Fifty Shades of Grey - more than 100 million copies sold - not to mention the sales of other books in the series and the movies it's generated, prove that interest in BDSM - bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism - is anything but rare. "It's very out in the culture right now, but it's not fully out of the shadows yet," says Gentille. "People are still embarrassed to talk about sex. What they discover when they dive a little deeper into it is that in BDSM you actually get to talk about what you like, what you're curious about, and what is a definite 'No.' It's clear, overt, and collaborative and that can feel delightful. And if you like it, if you have control over what happens, it's all good fun." Wait! Why waste your time with my long talk, when you can dive in rightaway? CLICK THE BUY BUTTON NOW!! TO GET STARTED

Book Sadomasochism and the BDSM Community in the United States

Download or read book Sadomasochism and the BDSM Community in the United States written by Stephen K. Stein and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sadomasochism and the BDSM Community in the United States: Kinky People Unite chronicles the development of sadomasochistic sexuality and its communities in the United States from the post-war period to the present day. Having evolved from scattered networks of sadomasochists to a coherent body bound by shared principles of "safe, sane, consensual," activists worked to transform popular perceptions of their community, end its routine harassment by law enforcement and win inclusion in American society. Often paralleling the work of LGBTQ activists, people who engaged in BDSM (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadism and Masochism) transformed both their own sexual practices and how outsiders perceived them, successfully changing popular perceptions of them from fascists, murderers, and outlaws to people living an alternative lifestyle. The development of this community highlights the interactions of people of different sexual orientations within a sexual community, the influence of various campaigns for sexual freedom, and the BDSM community's influence on popular perceptions of sexuality and sexual freedom. The text’s historical perspective gives depth and texture to a specific dimension of American history of sexuality. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in the history of sexuality. Its clear and direct approach offers an important and useful chronology of a movement that has long been neglected.
