Book excerpt: The integrity of groundwater sources is constantly threatened by contaminant plumes generated by accidental gasoline leakages and leachates escaping landfills. These plumes are of concern due to their proven toxicity to living organisms. Aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, volatile fatty acids, phenols, and ammonia have been found in these leachates. In addition, benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) are major components of gasoline. The lack of oxygen in groundwater makes anaerobic bioremediation desired for the treatment of groundwater contaminated with BTX and chlorinated solvents. With the objective of finding microorganisms capable of BTX and cis-dichloroethylene (cis-DCE) degradation under anaerobic conditions for their use in permeable reactive barriers, different inocula were tested in batch experiments. Toluene was rapidly degraded by several inocula in the presence of alternative electron acceptors. Benzene and m-xylene were eliminated by few of the inocula tested after incubation periods ranging from 244 to 716 days. cis-DCE was highly recalcitrant as no degradation was observed over 440 days. Biological processes have been successfully applied for the treatment of landfill leachates as well. In an effort to provide an effective and economical alternative, an anaerobic-aerobic system was evaluated using a synthetic media simulating the organic and ammonia content of real leachates. The removal of the organic content reached 98% in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor, and resulted in the formation of methane. During the aerobic process, in an innovative down-flow sponge reactor, ammonia was highly transformed to nitrite and nitrate. Complete nitrification was eventually achieved. The capacity of current wastewater treatment plants for removing nanoparticles has been questioned during the last years. Nanoparticles have been incorporated into numerous applications and their presence in wastewater seems to be inevitable. A laboratory-scale secondary treatment system was set-in to study the behavior of cerium and aluminum oxide nanoparticles during wastewater treatment. The nanoparticles were highly removed, suggesting that secondary treatment is suitable for their elimination. The removal of these nanoparticles was influenced by the pH and organic content of the wastewater. Aluminum nanoparticles proved to be toxic; however the performance of the system for eliminating the organic content was recovered over time.

Book excerpt: The research was devoted to the study and development approach of a new detoxification technique that combines photocatalytic and biological processes for the treatment of nonbiodegradable organics as well as efficient N removal from the landfill effluents. The humic acid was used as model compound of non-biodegradable organics present in mature and stabilised landfill leachates. One of the important issues in the photocatalytic processis the adsorption of the organic compound on the surface of the semiconductor T. He effect of pH and inorganic salts such as NaHCOl, NaCl, NazSO+N, azHPO+( so-called inorganic matrix) commonly found in leachates on adsorption and photoreactivity of has were assessed. The research were caried out at laboratory scale in Solar Box fitted with Xenon lamp (LCA -France) and confirmed at pilot scaleu sing non-concentrating(CPC) collectors under solar radiation at Pataforma Solar de Almeria (PSA) in Spain. The photocatalytic process (UV/TiO, has proved to be effective for the decolourisation as well as mineralization of humic acids solution amounting to 100 ppm. The results obtained at both scales were very encouraging and the influence of the main parameters( such as catalyst concenftation, pH, matrix effect) governing photocatalytic mineralization of humic acids was determined. It was suggested that the solar photocatalysis for HA- rich waters in good insolation region could become economically competitive for conventionally applied methods such as coagulation/flocculation/filtration, ionic exchange or membrane filtration. Moreover, it was found that biodegradability of refractory organic substances such as HAs increases with irradiation time, which is of great importance in the case of the application of physicochemical-biological coupled system to wastewater treatment. In work, the efficiency of two different biological systems based on attached growth microorganisms used for biological oxidation treatment of organics as well as nitrogen removal from landfill leachate was reported. Both tested systems were efficient in degradation of a large fraction of the soluble organism matter from the leachate but a significant amount of remaining COD,mainly humic like substance was present in effluent. Consequently it was indicated that the removal of the residual COD fraction responsible for the specific yellow-brown colour is needed in order to meet discharge standards, The systems were successfull in removing high nitrogen concentrations by means of nitrrification/denitrification, but an external carbon source for enhancing denitrification was required. The fifth chapter of the thesis refers to the study of photocatalytic degradation of refractory organic remaining in the biological pre-treated leachate. Two photocatalytic systems using different irradiation sources i.e. Xe-lamp and Hg-medium pressure lamp, have been compared. The effect of inorganic matrix and catalyst dose on photocatalytic mineralization of organic and decolourization of leachate was determined. At the same time it was observed that biodegradability (BOD/COD) inceased in the leachate with reaction time. Moreover, the feasibility of post-biological treatment of organics remaining after photocatalytic stage was confirmed. The last part of the thesis gives conclusions drawn from the present works. Additionally, it presents prospects for research including proposal of a combined photocatalytic/physical and biological method in the integrated system to treat stabilised leachate from municipal landfill.
