Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable forest management (SFM) is not a new concept. However, its popularity has increased in the last few decades because of public concern about the dramatic decrease in forest resources. The implementation of SFM is generally achieved using criteria and indicators (C

Book Identifying Uncertainty in Practitioner Knowledge of Boreal Forest Succession in Ontario Through a Workshop Approach

Download or read book Identifying Uncertainty in Practitioner Knowledge of Boreal Forest Succession in Ontario Through a Workshop Approach written by M. Drescher and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expert knowledge of boreal forest succession is used widely in forest management in boreal Ontario, but the level of uncertainty of this mainly implicit knowledge is unknown. Therefore, in this study expert knowledge of boreal forest succession was elicited, it's uncertainty quantified, and the sources of this uncertainty investigated. This report consists of four main parts. The introduction presents examples of the use of forest succession knowledge in forest management in boreal Ontario. The methods section provides background information about the concept of knowledge uncertainty and possible assessment methods and describes the characteristics of experts. The results section details the quantification of the various components of uncertainty and describes the distribution of uncertainty. The conclusions section presents the strengths and weaknesses of this study and discusses the implications of the study results for forest policy and management in Ontario.--Includes text from document.

Book Boreal Forest Succession in Ontario

Download or read book Boreal Forest Succession in Ontario written by M. Drescher and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest succession can be viewed, from a tree-centric point of view, as the temporal pattern of changes in tree species composition that occur following a disturbance that destroyed the existing forest cover, and includes the initial re-establishment of the forest cover. Fire is one such natural disturbance in boreal forests. The broad goal of the work reported here was to explore the body of boreal forest succession knowledge, to elucidate its strengths, weaknesses, and gaps, and to quantify its levels of uncertainty.--Document.

Book Forest Biomass

Download or read book Forest Biomass written by T. Satoo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lord Rutherford has said that all science is either physics or stamp collecting. On that basis the study of forest biomass must be classified with stamp collecting and other such pleasurable pursuits. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.

Book Continuous Cover Forestry

Download or read book Continuous Cover Forestry written by Timo Pukkala and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the majority of the world’s forest ecosystems are dominated by uneven-sized multi-species stands, forest management practice and theory has focused on the development of plantation monocultures to maximize the supply of timber at low cost. Societal expectations are changing, however, and uneven-aged multi-species ecosystems, selectively managed as Continuous Cover Forestry (CCF), are often believed to be superior to monocultures in addressing a wide range of expectations. This book presents methods which are relevant to CCF management and planning: analysing forest structures, silvicultural and planning, economic evaluation, based on examples in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America.

Book Climate Change and Insect Pests

Download or read book Climate Change and Insect Pests written by Christer Bjorkman and published by CABI. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects, being poikilothermic, are among the organisms that are most likely to respond to changes in climate, particularly increased temperatures. Range expansions into new areas, further north and to higher elevations, are already well documented, as are physiological and phenological responses. It is anticipated that the damage by insects will increase as a consequence of climate change, i.e. increasing temperatures primarily. However, the evidence in support of this common “belief” is sparse. Climate Change and Insect Pests sums up present knowledge regarding both agricultural and forest insect pests and climate change in order to identify future research directions.

Book Transition Pathways towards Sustainability in Agriculture

Download or read book Transition Pathways towards Sustainability in Agriculture written by Lee-Ann Sutherland and published by CABI. This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on the research of an interdisciplinary team of sociologists, geographers and economists, this book focuses on understanding farming transitions in Europe. The book discusses the importance of understanding transition pathways towards sustainability using case studies from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Portugal and the United Kingdom. Assessing the utility of the multi-level perspective in transition theory for addressing contemporary issues, the book identifies future research needs and possible approaches, making this an essential read for researchers interested in issues of rural and agricultural change.

Book Carbon Management Technologies and Trends in Mediterranean Ecosystems

Download or read book Carbon Management Technologies and Trends in Mediterranean Ecosystems written by Sabit Erşahin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book pursues a unique approach, investigating both the ecological and socio-economic aspects of carbon management in Mediterranean ecosystems. All chapters are based on papers originally presented at the 1st Istanbul Carbon Summit, held at Istanbul Technical University, 2–4 April, 2014, and revised following a peer-review process. The book addresses the summit’s three main themes – carbon management, carbon technologies, and carbon trends – while also offering chapters on the economic aspects of carbon management and the ecological aspects of the carbon cycle. The chapters on economic aspects analyze the carbon trade and its institutional, political, and legislative structures in different Mediterranean nations, while those on ecological aspects review the discourse on and analysis of the related ecological factors and their feedback due to governance processes.
