Book excerpt: Quantum computing promises to revolutionize modern computation. The race to establish a reliable quantum computing system has spurred research over the globe with the goal of establishing a reliable qubit system. One of the more promising candidates are trapped ions. To that end, I have characterized, improved, and designed experiments to be performed in a novel parabolic mirror ion trap. We measured the trap to have a light collection efficiency of 39%, nearly an order of magnitude higher than the light collection of ion traps utilizing standard collection optics. The parabolic mirror also improves the quality of image collected from a trapped ion, but is limited by the micromotion the ion undergoes while at the optical focus. We designed a new trap component to allow radial control over the ion position by moving the RF null, instead of displacing it with DC bias plates. This improved trapping system is a key part of our plan to to remotely entangle an In donor defect in ZnO with a single trapped Yb+ using a 369 nm photon bus. The lifetime of the relevant ionic state is longer than that of the ZnO system by a factor of 6, leading to a greatly decreased temporal overlap in their emitted photons and thus decreased fidelity in the final entangled state if left unattended. This temporal mismatch is a long outstanding challenge when entangling disparate quantum systems, and to address it I performed numerical calculations to design an excitation pulse which can shape the emitted In photon to have an overlap of 0.99 with the Yb+ photon. This leads to a calculated entangled state fidelity of 94% and an entangled state generation rate of 21 kHz with reasonable experimental parameters. Future directions of the parabolic mirror project are the construction of an ellipsoidal mirror trap which is expected to collect light from 95% of the solid angle surrounding a trapped ion. This high light collection will enable investigations into the time dynamics of quantum jumps. These jumps occur when a weakly driven system is continuously measured, and their appearance is entirely random. However, recent work in an artificial superconducting atom suggests that there is a latency period in other transitions which precedes a jump, allowing for these events to be 'caught'. We endeavor to confirm this behavior in a trapped ion, confirming the discovery for a real atomic system.

Book excerpt: Electric dipole moments (EDMs) have interested physicists since 1950, when it was first suggested that there was no experimental evidence that nuclear forces are symmetric under parity (P) transformation. This question was regarded as speculative because the existence of an EDM, in addition to P violation, requires a violation of time-reversal (T) symmetry. In 1964 it was discovered that the invariance under CP transformation, which combines charge conjugation (C) with parity, is violated in K-meson decays. This provided a new incentive for EDM searches. Since the combined operations of CPT are expected to leave a system invariant, breakdown of CP invariance should be accompanied by a violation of time-reversal symmetry. Thus there is a reason to expect that EDMs should exist at some level. The original neutron EDM experiments were later supplemented with checks of T invariance in atoms and molecules. These investigations are pursued now by many groups. Over the years, the upper limit on the neutron EDM has been improved by seven orders of magnitude, and the upper limit on the electron EDM obtained in atomic experiments is even more strict.

Trapped Rydberg ions are a new hybrid technology envisaged to have both the exquisite control of trapped ion systems and the strong interactions of Rydberg atoms. In this work a single trapped Rydberg ion is experimentally investigated. A trapped strontium ion is excited to Rydberg states using two ultraviolet lasers. Effects of the strong trapping electric fields on the highly-sensitive Rydberg ion are studied. After mitigating unwanted trap effects, the ion is coherently excited to Rydberg states and a quantum gate is demonstrated. This thesis lays much of the experimental groundwork for research using this novel system.

Book excerpt: Quantum logic gates are the crucial information-processing operation of quantumcomputers. Two crucial performance metrics for logic gates are their precision andspeed. Quantum processors based on trapped ions have always been the touchstonefor gate precision, but have suffered from slow speed relative to other quantum logicplatforms such as solid state systems. This thesis shows that it is possible to acceleratethe logic "clock speed" from kHz to MHz speeds, whilst maintaining a precision of99.8%. This is almost as high as the world record for conventional trapped-ion gates,but more than 20 times faster. It also demonstrates entanglement generation in atime (480ns) shorter than the natural timescale of the ions' motion in the trap, whichstarts to probe an interesting new regime of ion trap physics. In separate experiments, some of the first "mixed-species" quantum logic gates areperformed, both between two different elements, and between different isotopes.The mixed-isotope gate is used to make the first test of the quantum-mechanical Bellinequality between two different species of isolated atoms.

Book excerpt: Laser-cooled, trapped ions are a highly controlled experimental system that allows one to engineer novel quantum states of both fundamental and practical interest. For a string of ions in a linear radio frequency (RF) Paul trap, the linear-zigzag structural phase transition is an intriguing system to investigate quantum dynamics near the critical point of a prototype second-order phase transition, including the preparation of superposition states of different structural configurations. This thesis focuses on two technological improvements required for studying the linear-zigzag structural phase transition in the quantum regime. The first is the development of a compact and cost-effective RF synthesizer setup to provide multiple modulation sources for the laser manipulation of ion strings. The functionality and limitations of a prototype design, based on Direct Digital Synthesizer (DDS) development boards with a microcontroller interface, are evaluated and future improvements are identified. The second part of this thesis focuses on the stabilization of the secular trap frequencies in a linear Paul trap, which is necessary to obtain a stable critical point for the studies of the linear-zigzag transition. To this end, this thesis presents the implementation of a Ramsey spectroscopic technique to measure the secular frequencies and presents the preliminary results from the stability tests.

Book excerpt: The trapped ions platform represents an excellent framework for Quantum information science experiments. Long coherence times, extremely high state initialization and detection fidelity, inherent full-connectivity between qubits are some features that make trapped ions the ideal qubits. It is the same features that make this platform extremely suitable for quantum simulation of various physical phenomenon, particularly quantum spin models. In this thesis, I present the design and construction of an ion trapping apparatus for quantum simulation experiments. This apparatus is operational and is used for the trapping of ionized Yb atoms. The 6 electrodes of the trap, two of which are needle electrodes, are made out of tungsten. I discuss the unique technique we use to make tungsten needle electrodes. The design, construction, and testing of the Yb source, used to produce a thermal beam of Yb atoms, is also discussed. The apparatus discussed above needs to be housed inside an ultra-high vacuum environment to keep the ions free from background collisions. I have discussed the design and construction of the vacuum system. In the end, I have provided a brief overview of the system in the lab and presented results in the form of pictures of single and multiple trapped ions.
