Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments With Blister Canker of Apple Trees In order to make clear the nature of the problem involved in the experimental work, it is necessary to present certain facts in regard to the life history and habits of this organism. No attempt is made to present all of the experimental work on which these facts are based. Where the writer has arrived at conclusions at variance with other investigators, a more detailed discussion is presented. Book Blister Canker of Apple Trees a Physiological and Chemical Study

Download or read book Blister Canker of Apple Trees a Physiological and Chemical Study written by Dean Humboldt Rose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blister Canker of Apple Trees, a Physiological and Chemical Study: A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Ogden Graduate School of Science in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Department of Botany It is now generally recognized that among the most important problems of plant pathology are those connected with the physiol ogy of diseases whose etiology is already known. It is also recog nized that this must be the physiology of the host, of the parasite, and of the two in relation to each other, and, further, that such a comprehensive View of all the factors involved furnishes the only rational approach to an understanding of the principles underlying immunity and disease resistance. In the present paper are given the results of a physiological study of the destructive disease known as Illinois or blister canker, the etiology of which, including the identity of the causal organism, Nummularia discreta (schw.) Tul., was worked out by hassel bring (22) in 1902. The work reported here is a continuation of an earlier investigation by the writer (30) on the oxidase activity of healthy and diseased bark; in addition there is included an account of the catalase activity and microchemical and macro chemical analyses of both kinds of tissues. Further work is planned on the chemistry of the disease, on the role of other enzymes than. Oxidases, and on the physiology of the fungus itself in pure culture. Book Canker of Apple Trees Classic Reprint

Download or read book Canker of Apple Trees Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Hasselbring and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Canker of Apple Trees The Illinois apple tree canker occurs on the large limbs and trunks of apple trees. It produces extended blackened areas within which the bark cracks and finally crumbles away. This always results in the death of the affected limb. Pp. 227-233. The fungus causing the canker is a wound parasite gaining entrance into the tree through wounds caused by pruning or by accidental injuries. P. 233. The best means of preventing the disease is to avoid as much as possible all injury to the bark, to prune properly, and to paint wounds with an antisceptic solution. Badly diseased limbs should be cut and burned. P.234. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blight Canker of Apple Trees Another source Of infection was found to be the pruning knife. Along one side of an orchard of about 350 trees which was under observation thruout the season, it was early noticed that the pruned stubs, of 1904 especially, showed the collars of dead bark often two or three inches in width (fig. Instead of forming a callus and healing over the wound, as would normally occur, the tissue had died and shriveled up but still clung to the stub. In most cases the bacteria which had caused the death of the bark had died out the first season. In a few instances, however, the canker was observed to be active early in the spring, extend ing down the side of the adjoining limb. Two badly diseased trees on this side of the orchard seem to have been the source of infection. Owing to their diseased condition, they had been severely pruned the previous season and very probably the knife or saw had carried the bacteria to the healthy trees. Flies. This book was released on 2018-03-18 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spraying Experiments and Apple Diseases in 1913 As a rule we have found that with the Ben Davis spray injury from bor-deaux mixture was so severe that it equalled or more than offset the beneficial effects derived from the control of apple scab. While a much better grade of fruit from the standpoint of keeping quality and freedom from disease has been the invariable result from trees sprayed with this mate rial the russeted appearance of the skin materially reduced its market value. In other words, while the injurious effects of bordeaux mixture and certain other sprays upon the fruit of susceptible varieties like the Ben Davis are concerned almost wholly with the appearance of the fruit and not with its keep ing quality or value as an article of food the price it will bring on the market is just as effectually reduced as though the lat ter were the case. If the selling price of apples depended more on the quality of the fruit and less on the appearance of the skin certain of the difficulties now experienced in spraying would disappear.
