Book Experiments in Relief Print Making

Download or read book Experiments in Relief Print Making written by Charles W. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2019-11 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a facsimile edition of the first book to document and explore nontraditional "pressure printing" techniques for creating multicolor shading in relief printing of wood engravings and linoleum blocks. The author shows the process for applying shaped backing layers behind the paper to be printed, in order to create a unique artistic effect. "Several of the methods described require but one engraved block for producing prints in any number of colors, while the traditional method requires a separate engraved block for each color used, and in another method the engraved block is not necessary at all for making prints in many colors," the author writes. Experiments in Relief Print Making, by Charles Smith, was originally published in 1954 by the University of Virginia Press in a limited edition of 300 copies. It features six images printed by letterpress in multiple colors from hand-cut plates and the artist's original make-ready layers. Each color print is accompanied by reproductions showing separations of the individual color layers in isolation. For the facsimile edition all of the finished images and layers are displayed at their full original size, using high resolution scans from the limited edition 1954 book. "The term 'direct impression' as used here means that the block has been engraved and color transferred directly from the engraved block to the printing paper. The make-ready or indirect impression is different in that pressure is applied to the reverse side of the paper causing the image to offset from a block to the printing paper. This impression is never as sharp and clear as the direct impressions. Usually a combination of the two will produce softness and sharpness, although either may be used separately for certain desirable effects."

Book excerpt: Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today is a major collection of contemporary politically and socially engaged printmaking. This full-color book showcases print art that uses themes of social justice and global equity to engage community members in political conversation. Based on an art exhibition that has traveled to a dozen cities in North America, Paper Politics features artwork by over 200 international artists; an eclectic collection of work by both activist and non-activist printmakers who have felt the need to respond to the monumental trends and events of our times. Paper Politics presents a breathtaking tour of the many modalities of printing by hand: relief, intaglio, lithography, serigraph, collagraph, monotype, and photography. In addition to these techniques, included are more traditional media used to convey political thought, finely crafted stencils and silk-screens intended for wheat pasting in the street. Artists range from the well established (Sue Coe, Swoon, Carlos Cortez) to the up-and-coming (Favianna Rodriguez, Chris Stain, Nicole Schulman), from street artists (BORF, You Are Beautiful) to rock poster makers (EMEK, Bughouse).

Book Intaglio Simultaneous Color Printmaking

Download or read book Intaglio Simultaneous Color Printmaking written by Krishna Reddy and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is a straightforward, comprehensive reference on the art of color printmaking created by Krishna Reddy, one of the world's greatest and most innovative printmakers. This book doesn't expect the reader to know a lot, but at the same time, it doesn't omit any technical detail. There are complete formulas, lists of materials and equipment, and step-by-step instructions documented by photos. An outstanding innovator and experimenter, Krishna Reddy sees the plate as a sculpted surface, and intaglio printing as a three-dimensional process. Reddy creates a philosophy for working the image. By varying ink viscosity and roller density, he has achieved colors of extraordinary complexity on the plate. Reddy's discovery of the principle of color viscosity has greatly simplified technical processes while at the same time increasing the expressiveness and intensity of the image. This book demonstrates the intimate connection of the artist with his materials. Krishna Reddy's artistic genius brought him universal acclaim: fifty one-man exhibitions have been mounted not only in the U.S. and Europe, but also in Montreal, Bombay, Melbourne, New Delhi, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, and Beijing. He serves on numerous award juries, ranging from the Society of American Graphic Artists to the Lalit Kala Akademi of India. But it is not his artistic prowess alone that uniquely qualified Krishna Reddy to write a book on printmaking. He is also a consummate teacher: "He can initiate people to an entirely different field of expression," observes a collaborator at Paris' famed Atelier 17, which Reddy directed for more than 10 years. Today he directs the Graphics Program at New York University.

Book Escape Emeralda

Download or read book Escape Emeralda written by Bill H. Ritchie and published by Ritchie's Perfect Press. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My life, from my birthday to the last decade of 1900s, is a spectrum of events both good and bad as I follow T. S. Elliot’s lines, “We shall not cease from exploration, And the end of all our exploring, Will be to arrive where we started, And know the place for the first time.” Growing up on my father’s farm, there was plenty of exploration, but I never went back to the farm. Far from it! My explorations took me where no teacher in my main field, which is printmaking, had gone because I was hired at 24 by a major research university where its campus services gave me a head start exploring electronic arts and computers, I could blend with teaching printmaking. Ironically, while these brought opportunities, there were hidden limitations. In the 1980s I gambled our home to take us on a vast sabbatical research project for the university. We returned to find the school corrupt, and so it ended my career. Fortunately, I married well. My high school sweetheart, Lynda, stayed with me even on my wayward ventures. In addition she brought two fine daughters to our lives. And had it not been for her ability to restore our property, my exploring would have ended forever. Because, when the art school closed its door, others opened. Everything I learned in nineteen years at the UW prepared me to continue privately. By 1990, I was on cloud nine and the Internet was within my grasp. These are the words from one of two volumes I illustrated with a thousand pictures. What autobiography of a teaching artist’s life would be complete without pictures? Not only my art, but my students’, and from collaborations with diverse artists, crafts people, designers, and writers. Plus QR codes! It is for anyone who loves a good read about teaching art as I was known for in Seattle, but also about an old professor’s family, friends, art patrons, and former students who made it possible. It continues in Volume 2. Volume 1 takes this farmboy to the approach of the information superhighway.
