Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of General Chemistry: With Experiments In too many instances the student is introduced to qualitative analysis as his first laboratory work, and this is followed by gravimetric analysis to complete a course. This plan certainly gives the beginner a distorted idea of the relative importance of analytical chemistry in the study of the science; for the beginner a knowledge of the proper ties of a substance, the methods of its preparation and its uses is far more important than acquaintance with methods of separation, and general illustrative experiments should, therefore, be made the foundation work in the laboratory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Experiments General and Analytical: For Use With Any d104-Book of Chemistry, or Without a d104-Book The rapid growth of the laboratory method of teaching chemistry since the author's Manual was issued in 1888 has called for a larger and more comprehensive work of a similar sort for high schools academies, and colleges. To such a call the present book is a response. In preparing the experiments the author has endeavored, first, to select such as are most instructive and best illustrate the subject without being too elaborate; second, to arrange them in an order calculated to lead up by the most natural and easiest steps to a knowledge of the science; third, to make the subject fascinating by giving just enough information and suggestion to interest the experimenter, and to make him work for the knowledge to be gained. Finally, the author has aimed to make the book simple enough for the dull and slow pupil, and - by the introduction of supplementary and original work - elaborate enough for the most acute. Great care has been taken to give minute and accurate directions for performing the experiments. " Terms " at the end of experiments are for pupils to study outside the laboratory, and are often repeated. They may also be discussed in the laboratory. Metal analysis has received a somewhat unique treatment. Each metal of a group is first taken separately, and the analytical reactions are given. This method shows the pupil at once why a given re-agent is added, and what its effect is. The product is given when the substance is in solution as well as when it is precipitated. The group is next treated in the same way. This method clarifies the subject greatly in the pupil's mind, and is believed to be a valuable departure in teaching analysis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Experiments in General Chemistry Frequently the experiments do not furnish sufficient information to enable the student to answer some of the questions and make the explanations that are to appear in his notebook. The necessary information can generally be obtained from the text-book, and it is my plan to have the student use the text-book and laboratory outline as companion volumes in the laboratory. To facilitate the stu dent's progress in this connection page references to two widely used texts have been inserted. My experience goes to show that the student will thus make very efficient use of his time, that he will give care and thought to his work, and that the laboratory work can be successfully made the central feature of instruction in the course. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quantitative Experiments: In General Chemistry While many of the methods which are described are of a comparatively rough character from the standpoint of the exact analyst, the results, in many instances, may be quite as good as those often obtained by the student in carrying out the more elaborate procedure which is usually prescribed. Some indica tion of the degree of accuracy which may be expected is given in examples from actual experiments. The present edition differs from its predecessors in that new experiments have been introduced, while others described in former editions have been modified in accordance with the experience obtained in the daily use of the book with large classes. Book An Introduction to the Analytical Chemistry of the Rarer Elements Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Analytical Chemistry of the Rarer Elements Classic Reprint written by Louis J. Curtman and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Analytical Chemistry of the Rarer Elements The experiments described in this book are designed to lay a sound foundation for the analytical study of the rarer elements. The great economic importance attained by these metals in the last decade indicates the imperative need of introducing into our colleges and universities a course of instruction such as is given in this book. Lectures and text-book study unsupported by adequate laboratory practice are ineffective in this essentially experimental field. The author wishing to give his students a brief laboratory course in the rarer elements in which the analytical side would be emphasized, looked about in vain for a suitable text. He therefore prepared this series of experiments to meet his requirements. Every experiment described in this manual was personally performed and repeated by the author. As is well known, the results obtained in preliminary experiments in qualitative analysis depend not only upon the concentrations of the test-solutions used, but also upon the strengths of the reagents employed. To this end, test-solutions of known concentrations are invariably employed. The preparation of these solutions is facilitated by the use of the author's special table giving the quantities of the salts or compounds to be used in each set of experiments. To insure further definiteness in the results, directions are given for preparing the reagents to be used in making the tests. A laboratory course in the rarer elements is often objected to on the ground that the materials required are expensive. To meet this difficulty, it was necessary first, to provide that in each test a very small though definite quantity of metal be used; second, to carry out numerous experiments to determine the conditions under which conclusively visible results could be obtained when using small amounts of metal. Both of these tasks have been successfully accomplished. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As many of the experiments there recommended have been inserted as seemed to the authors to be of advantage to the student following this course, the time at disposal and the facilities of the average laboratory being taken into account. In some cases it may be that in laboratories not completely equipped fairly satisfactory results may be obtained with simpler apparatus. The effort has. Book A Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry written by W. S. Hendrixson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of General Chemistry This the fourth edition of the author's Experiments in General Chemistry is printed, as its predecessors have been, primarily for the use of students in general chemistry in Grinnell College. This fact may explain certain departures from custom in the preparation of such books, such as suggestions to teachers and detailed descriptions of apparatus and its manipulation. As a matter of fact apparatus at all complicated is not only shown by cuts, but it is set up on the lecture table and many experiments for any period are there carried through before the students enter the laboratory. Some apparatus is even set up in the laboratory and left there for inspection during the laboratory period. Not satisfied to use the same set of even his own experiments year after year and wishing to provide new laboratory work for classes of students who have taken chemistry in the high school, the writer has provided for more laboratory work than can be done in a three- or four-hour course of one year. In this book an attempt is made to connect rationally general chemistry and qualitative analysis. Students who complete a first year course in chemistry should have some knowledge of qualitative analysis, but it should not be permitted to take the place of general chemistry in the second half year, which is usually devoted to study of the metals. Qualitative analysis ought to be a development from the general chemistry to which it gives point, and its introduction as an outgrowth of the general chemistry greatly stimulates the student's interest in both subjects. In this book tests for acids and other compounds are given in the study of the non-metals, and a system for the detection of acids is given after the study of the non-metals has been completed. In the study of the metals emphasis is placed on properties that are of analytical significance, though other facts are not neglected. After each group of metals has been studied their separation is taken up, and the work is extended as rapidly as the student's experience justifies it, to the detection of both metals and acid radicals in "unknowns." The scheme of qualitative analysis as outlined is not supposed to be complete but is meant to serve as an introduction to the subject and a preparation to the more rigorous course in qualitative analysis the following year.
