Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The California Grape Root-Worm The California Grape Root-worm is an insect that attacks both the roots and the growing parts Of the vine above ground. It has been known to attack the leaves of the Vine in this State for a good many years, but until a year or two ago it was unknown as a root feeder. It is similar in its life history and mode of attack to the well-known grape root-worm of the Eastern States, which is one of the worst pests that the vineyardists there have to wage war against. Cur species has been doing considerable damage during the past two or three years, and it promises to be an important enemy of the vine in California. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experiments in the Control of Grape Anthracnose Anthracnose affects practically all the green parts of the plant. On the green shoots it causes cankers (pl. I, fig. Which first appear as small, light-brown, slightly sunken spots. These spots enlarge, sink deeper, and become darker in color as the disease progresses. If the canker is near the base of a shoot, the whole shoot may be killed. If not killed directly by the disease, the shoot may be so weakened as to be easily broken. The fungus causes cankers on the petioles and ribs of the leaves (pl. I, fig. On the stems of bunches of grapes, and on the tendrils. On the grape berries it first appears as light-brown spots, which rapidly become darker and are soon surrounded by a circular bright-red zone, which, as seen against the green background of the grape, presents the very striking appearance that gives the disease the name of bird's-eye rot. The berries in later stages of the disease shrivel and dry up (pl. I, fig. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grapevine Root Wor The season of 1902 was unusually favorable to vine growth, and the same is true. Of the past summer, a condition for which the grower should be thankful, since it has enabled the vines to withstand insect attacks more successfully. Area infested. Ripley appears to be the original center of this insect's most destructive work, though it has been found generally present in small numbers in many vineyards where little evidence of serious injury occurs. The pest very probably made its way into the Chautauqua grape belt from Ohio; and our investigations in 1903 show that it is present in greater or less numbers from the state line as far east as Sheridan, if not farther and from the lake shore to the top of the adjacent hills. We have also found it in small numbers in Hudson river valley vineyards at Highland and Milton. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insecticide Residues on Grapes Treated for Control of Insects Grapes in northern Ohio are grown on a 3 - wire trellis in rows from 100 to several hundred feet in length. For the most part, pesticide applications are made with a hooded spray boom so that drift is minimized. The experimental spray plots con sisted of single - row replicates or block treatments replicated. The sampling method was developed to be applicable to either type of experimental design. In the field, samples were taken directly from clusters that were not removed from the vines. The berry, with 1 to 2 mm. Of pedicel, was snipped from the cluster with a long-nosed citrus shear and allowed to fall directly into a 1 - pint sample jar. Split, cracked, or injured grapes were not included. Three berries were taken from each sampled cluster: One from near the t0p, one from near the middle, and one from the end. Neither clusters nor berries were touched by hand.
