If the canker is near the base of a shoot, the whole shoot may be killed. If not killed directly by the disease, the shoot may be so weakened as to be easily broken. The fungus causes cankers on the petioles and ribs of the leaves (pl. I, fig. On the stems of bunches of grapes, and on the tendrils. On the grape berries it first appears as light-brown spots, which rapidly become darker and are soon surrounded by a circular bright-red zone, which, as seen against the green background of the grape, presents the very striking appearance that gives the disease the name of bird's-eye rot. Ripley appears to be the original center of this insect's most destructive work, though it has been found generally present in small numbers in many vineyards where little evidence of serious injury occurs. The pest very probably made its way into the Chautauqua grape belt from Ohio; and our investigations in 1903 show that it is present in greater or less numbers from the state line as far east as Sheridan, if not farther and from the lake shore to the top of the adjacent hills. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Insecticide Residues on Grapes Treated for Control of Insects Grapes in northern Ohio are grown on a 3 - wire trellis in rows from 100 to several hundred feet in length. For the most part, pesticide applications are made with a hooded spray boom so that drift is minimized. The experimental spray plots con sisted of single - row replicates or block treatments replicated. The sampling method was developed to be applicable to either type of experimental design. In the field, samples were taken directly from clusters that were not removed from the vines. The berry, with 1 to 2 mm. Of pedicel, was snipped from the cluster with a long-nosed citrus shear and allowed to fall directly into a 1 - pint sample jar. Split, cracked, or injured grapes were not included. Three berries were taken from each sampled cluster: One from near the t0p, one from near the middle, and one from the end. Neither clusters nor berries were touched by hand.
