Book International Review of General and Experimental Zoology

Download or read book International Review of General and Experimental Zoology written by William J. L. Felts and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Review of General and Experimental Zoology, Volume 1 is a collection of world literature concerning developments in general and experimental zoology. This book is composed of 9 chapters, and begins with an overview of foraminiferal biology. Foraminifera are single-cell animals, which extrude granuloreticulose pseudopodia and construct monothalamous or polythalamous shells of an organic, arenaceous, or calcareous nature. The succeeding chapters explore the significance of life span in biting insects, and the optic and static components of equilibrium orientation in fish, as well as their evaluation in the central nervous system. These topics are followed by discussions on environment and reproduction in domesticated species; experimental, histochemical, and ultrastructural studies of mammalian pituitary function; and the reproductive biology of strepsirhine. The final chapters examine the phylogenesis of vertebrate mineralized tissues and the effect of chronic exposure to increased gravity on growth and form of animals. This book will prove useful to zoologists.

Book International Review of General and Experimental Zoology

Download or read book International Review of General and Experimental Zoology written by William J. L. Felts and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Review of General and Experimental Zoology, Volume 3 reviews various topics related to general and experimental zoology, including the epigenetic mechanisms of patterns in the insect integument and the enteric plexus of mammals. The role of macrophages in the induction of the immune response and the metabolism of mammalian ova are also explored, together with the structure of gallbladder epithelium and cell types in the mammalian thyroid gland. Comprised of eight chapters, this volume first discusses the problem of supracellular pattern formation in the insect cuticle and its complexity and unknown nature, with emphasis on the cuticular patterns of the various zones of the cockroach antenna. The reader is then introduced to the enteric plexus of mammals and its components, along with the relationship of the innervation of the gut to the autonomic nervous system. Subsequent chapters focus on the role of macrophages in the induction of the immune response; metabolism of mammalian ova; structure of gallbladder epithelium; and the goblet cells, Paneth cells, and basal granular cells of the epithelium of the intestine. The book also considers cell types found in the mammalian thyroid gland before concluding with an assessment of the use of electron microscopy in elucidating the structure and function of the placenta. This monograph should prove useful to practicing zoologists and graduate and undergraduate students of zoology.

Book excerpt: This is a major new textbook that is intended to lead students away from purely descriptive zoology courses into an experimental approach that emphasizes asking and answering questions about nature. The book gives a panoramic view of vertebrate life, classification, ecology and behaviour. Section I of the book describes the major groups of vertebrates and their origins. The second section covers classification and its methodology. Section III describes the ecology of vertebrates from two standpoints: how individuals cope with environmental extremes, and principles of population and community ecology as illustrated by experiments carried out in the field. Section IV describes the geographic distribution of vertebrates. The fifth section discusses migration. Vertebrate behaviour is the subject of the final section and covers observations and the theories and experiments they have inspired.
