It would seem as if I were unacquainted with Dr. Granville's paper upon this subject, in the Quarterly Journal of Science, p. 371, were I to close my remarks without taking any notice of it. Unfortunately Dr. Granville has mistaken M. Labarraque's direction, and by passing chlorine, to " complete saturation," through the carbonate, instead of using the quantities directed, has failed in obtaining Labarraque's really curious and very important liquid; to which, in consequence, not one of his observations or experiments applies, although the latter are quite correct in themselves. Royal Institution, Sept. 3, 1827. Anhydrous Crystals of Sulphate of Soda*. If a drop of a solution of sulphate of soda be placed upon a glass plate and allowed to evaporate spontaneously, it will leave crystals which may be distinguished by their form and ultimate efflorescence, as being the salt in question. Most of the potash and soda salts may be distinguished as to their base by such an experiment. They are easily converted into sulphates by a drop or two of sulphuric acid and ignition, and then, being dissolved and tried as above, will yield crystals which may be known by their forms, and more especially by their efflorescence if of soda, and their unchangeable state if of potash. This test is, however, liable in certain circumstances to uncertainty, arising from a curious cause. If the drop of solution on the glass be allowed to evaporate at common temperatures, then the efflorescence takes place and the distinction is so far perfect; but if the glass plate with the drop upon it be placed upon a warm part of a sand-bath or hot iron plate, or in any other situation of a certain...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Scientific Discovery: Or the General Conditions and Methods of Research in Physics and Chemistry The process of scientific discovery depends on a com binflation of experiment and logical inference; and the small success of previous writers respecting it has, in my Opinion, been due to the circumstance, that those who possessed both the experimental and the logical know ledge necessary, made no sufficiently persistent attempt to determine how far the work of scientific discovery may be reduced to an art. Book Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage Classic Reprint written by R. A. Gregory and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry Second Stage This book is the second of three little volumes containing a course of experimental work on the elementary principles of Physics and Chemistry. A knowledge of the scientific meaning of such facts of ordinary experience as are described and examined in this and the two companion volumes ought to be possessed by everyone. Wherever the study of science is being commenced, it should be through the consideration of the properties of familiar things: for this is the best way to encourage an intelligent interest in scientific reasons and results. The course of work here followed is thus as suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as for schools of other grades. The value of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary, is now so widely recognised that it is almost unnecessary to advise that the experiments described in each lesson should be actually performed. Unfortunately, it is not often possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. This difficulty has been borne in mind in designing the form of the following lessons, each of which is divided into two parts - the first consisting of instructions for the performance of simple experiments, the second of explanations of the principles taught by the practical work. When circumstances permit, every pupil should perform the experiments, and when this is impossible he should see them done by someone else. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Physics: A Manual of Experimental Study for High Schools The teacher may grant the comparatively small result which is obtained from the study of physics by the method of lectures and recitations; but he will immediately ask, How can we obtain the time for laboratory work in physics - crowded as we are with so many studies? Moreover, the subject of physics is unlike that of chemistry of botany. In these subjects the cost of the apparatus and mate rial is comparatively small. Each student can have his own tubes, his own reagents, and his own mi croscope. In physics it is very different. The'ap paratus is expensive. A spectroscope, for instance, would cost nearly as much as the entire apparatus in a chemical laboratory. These are strong objec tions, and need careful consideration. The time, however, which is now given to recitation from text-books could at least be devoted to laboratory work; and the lectures could be reduced in num ber and only given to direct the students in their laboratory work. More can be done with cheap apparatus than is generally supposed. It is one of the objects of my treatise to show this. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental and Theoretical Applications of Thermodynamics to Chemistry The study of the results thus far obtained in this field makes it appear probable that there prevails here more conformity to general laws than the two laws of thermodynamics would lead us to expect. To explain these regularities I have developed a new theorem which seems to reveal new truths concerning, the relation between chemical energy and heat. It can hardly be doubted that this theorem will prove useful in the treatment of questions other than purely chemical, but in the following Lectures I have not entered into this phase of the subject. Book Elementary Physics and Chemistry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Physics and Chemistry: First Stage A few words will explain the scope and purpose of this little book. In 1898 a course of elementary physics and chemistry was introduced into the Code of the Education Department as a specific subject in which instruction could be given in the upper standards of elementary schools. The syllabus is divided into three parts, and the first of these is here dealt with. The course is well adapted for experimental work by indi vidual children, and, as it forms a satisfactory introduction to the study of science, it is suitable for the lower forms of secondary schools as well as for pupils in the upper standards of elementary schools. Every teacher now understands the importance of practical exercises in all scientific instruction, however elementary. Unfortunately, it is not as yet always possible to provide accommodation and apparatus sufficient to enable individual pupils to experiment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Physics: Demonstrated by the Student's Own Experiments In regard to science, our schools are not above the middle ages. Three hundred years ago students repeated the obscure statements of aristotle, of which a sample is given now our students repeat the statements of their text book, without obtaining any valid ground for the conviction they are made to express. The great work done by galileo for physical science in general, has not yet reached our schools. The method of scientific research, which he first so successfully 'practiced, and which alone can lead to conviction in the truth of the resalte obtained, has not yet gained admis sion to our schools. We venture with the present little work to knock at the doors of our schools in behalf of this method and in the interest of science. We do not advocate anything new. For two and a half centuries these very methods have been used, the grand structure of modern sci ence has resulted, and the course of civilization has been changed thereby. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemistry in the Service of Man But the end and aim of chemistry is not merely material. Chemistry offers its contribution also to the deeper interests of the human mind. Occupied as he is with the study of material substances and of the marvellous transformations which he is able to bring about in them, the thinking chemist is forced to look below the surface of things and to seek an answer to the fundamental questions relating to the ultimate constitution and structure of matter, and to the forces which govern the changes and transformations which he observes in his laboratory, or which are wrought out in the larger laboratory of Nature. The study, not merely of the products but also of the principles and laws underlying the processes of chemical change, forms the work of the modern chemist. 'in its wider sweep, chemistry ignores the conventional and artificial frontiers which mark it off from the other branches of science, more especially physics; and in the last quarter of a century there has been no more fruitful region of experimental and speculative activity than that common territory where the sciences of chemistry and physics overlap. In adapting methods and language to the view point of young pupils, the author has drawn upon an experience of several years with them. While it is one object of the book to teach the terms and expressions of science, care has been used to keep the meaning clear. Methods of treatment that easily convey wrong impressions have been avoided, as well as those which offend pupils of grammar school age. An effort has been made to show the practical bearing of the various subjects upon affairs in our daily experience, such matters being introduced wherever they may serve to illustrate or explain. The experiments are simple and may be performed by the teacher, or by the pupils with his oversight. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
