Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the RERTR Program whole-core demonstration in the Ford Nuclear Reactor (FNR) at the University of Michigan, data have been obtained which will allow more extensive validation of neutronics methods for whole-core calculations of an equilibrium high-enriched-uranium (HEU) core and a fresh low-enriched-uranium (LEU) core. A series of experiments designed to provide the data needed for these validations has been performed in the Pool Critical Assembly (PCA) at the Oak Ridge National laboratory (ORNL). This paper reports the results of the measurements and of the subsequent validation calculations performed at ANL. Measurements were made on approximately 20 different critical configurations in the PCA during the period June 15 to 26, 1981. The normal PCA fuel elements contained high-enriched uranium (HEU, 93 wt% 235U) while the reduced-enrichment fuel elements, obtained for irradiation testing in the Oak Ridge Research Reactor (ORR) under the fuel demonstration activity of the RERTR Program, contained either medium-enriched uranium (MEU, 45 wt% 235U) or low-enriched uranium (LEU, 19.8 wt% 235U).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide interest in nuclear reactors continues to increase and significant focus has been placed on advanced nuclear reactors intended to produce electricity and process heat. However, there is limited literature on the importance of research reactors and certain specialized reactor analysis topics. Thus, this book addresses these topics over three sections: “Nuclear Reactors for Spacecraft Propulsion”, “Research Reactors”, and “Select Reactor Analysis Techniques”. It provides detailed information on the use of nuclear reactors for spacecraft propulsion, presents research conducted on reactors in Idaho, USA, and discusses reactor analysis topics such as cyber-informed engineering for nuclear reactor digital instrumentation and control, the effect of plenum gas on fuel temperature, and more.

Book Subcritical Noise Analysis Measurements with Fresh and Spent Research Reactor Fuels Elements

Download or read book Subcritical Noise Analysis Measurements with Fresh and Spent Research Reactor Fuels Elements written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The verification of the subcriticality is of utmost importance for the safe transportation and storage of nuclear reactor fuels. Transportation containers and storage facilities are designed such that nuclear fuels remain in a subcritical state. Such designs often involve excess conservatism because of the lack of relevant experimental data to verify the accuracy of Monte Carlo codes used in nuclear criticality safety analyses. A joint experimental research program between Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Westinghouse Safety Management Solutions, Inc., and the University of Missouri was initiated to obtain measured quantities that could be directly related to the subcriticality of simple arrays of Missouri University Research Reactor (MURR) fuel elements. A series of measurement were performed to assess the reactivity of materials such as BORAL, stainless steel, aluminum, and lead that are typically used in the construction of shipping casks. These materials were positioned between the fuel elements. In addition, a limited number of measurements were performed with configurations of fresh and spent (irradiated) fuel elements to ascertain the reactivity of the spent fuel elements. In these experiments, fresh fuel elements were replaced by spent fuel elements such that the subcritical reactivity change could be measured. The results of these measurements were used by Westinghouse Safety Management Solutions to determine the subcriticality of MURR fuel elements isolated by absorbing materials. The measurements were interpreted using the MCNP-DSP Monte Carlo code to obtain the subcritical neutron multiplication factor k(sub eff), and the bias in K(sub eff) that are used in criticality safety analyses.

Book Measurement of Neutron and Gamma Spatial Distribution Inside Reactor

Download or read book Measurement of Neutron and Gamma Spatial Distribution Inside Reactor written by Marija Miletic and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives the theoretical description and practical measurement of the neutron and gamma spatial distribution in the radial experimental channel at VR-1 research reactor. For providing these measurements two experimental techniques were explained and used: off-line and on-line methods. On-line measurement of neutron spatial distribution was performed with He-3 gas filled detector. From off-line measurements Neutron Activation Analysis (for neutron detection) and Thermoluminescent method (for gamma radiation detection) were chosen. Obtained results from the experiments were compared with the results from the MCNP code in order to verify their correctness.

Download or read book Neutron Physics written by Karl-Heinrich Beckurts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based upon a series of lectures I have occasionally given at the University of Gottingen since 1951. They were meant to introduce the students of experimental physics to the work in a neutron physics laboratory dealing with the problem of measuring neutron flux, diffusion length, Fermi age, effective neutron temperature, absorption cross sections and similar problems. Moreover, these lectures were intended to prepare the students for a subsequent lecture covering the physics of nuclear reactors. The original character of this series of lectures has been retained in the book. It is intended for use by students as well as anyone desiring to work on neutron physics measurements. The first half mainly covers the theory of neutron fields, i. e. essentially diffusion and slowing down theory. The second half is largely concerned with measurements in neutron fields. The appendix contains information and data which, in our experience, are frequently required in a neutron laboratory. The field of nuclear physics proper is briefly touched upon in the first two chapters, but only to the extent necessary for the understanding of the following chapters. The multitude of applications of neutron radiation has not been covered. The conclusion of this manuscript coincided with the end of my long period of activity with the Max-Planck-Institut fur Physik at Gottingen. To Professor HEISENBERG lowe thanks for his advice and suggestions for many of the subjects treated here.

Book Nuclear Heating Measurements in the Maria Reactor and Implementation of Neutron and Photon Calculation Scheme

Download or read book Nuclear Heating Measurements in the Maria Reactor and Implementation of Neutron and Photon Calculation Scheme written by Mikolaj Tarchalski and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis work presents a calculation scheme which enables evaluation of heat generation from nuclear reactions in the MARIA nuclear reactor by use French computational codes TRIPOLI-4 © (TRIPOLI-4 is a registered trademark of CEA) and Apollo-2. Particular attention was devoted to the heat induced by gamma radiation. The thesis also presents measurements of nuclear heating in selected locations inside MARIA MTR reactor. This allows reaching first steps of validation and qualification of computer calculations. Research and analysis presented in the thesis allow one to compare the results obtained by using proposed calculation scheme with the experimental measurement methods. Finally, further works and perspectives were proposed on the development of the calculations and experimental measurements of nuclear heating in nuclear reactors.Qualifying the calculations was possible by performing especially dedicated 7-day core measurement campaigns. Nuclear heating measurements were performed with gamma thermometers and specially designed KAROLINA calorimeter. All measurement devices used were mounted in a dedicated probe, designed and built for this purpose, which allowed for the adjustment of instruments position inside the MARIA core. The main scientific hypothesis of this work is that currently available Monte Carlo simulations of neutron and gamma transport can be used to correct and accurate calculations of prompt nuclear heating in nuclear reactor, whereas delayed component of nuclear heating can be determined experimentally. For this purpose new calculation scheme and improvements in nuclear heating measurements were implemented.
