Book Experimental Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Experimental Physiology Classic Reprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Physiology The present volume is based upon a small book, entitled Directions for Class Work in Practical Physiology, which was published in 1901, and consisted chiefly of an account of the methods employed in the study of muscle and nerve physiology and of the heart, in so far as these could be illustrated in preparations from the frog. To that account have now been added descriptions of such other methods of Experimental Physiology as may be performed by the student either in class or individually, although a few which are given can - at least in this country - only take the form of demonstrations. The additions deal chiefly with the heart and vascular system, respiration, secretion, the central nervous system, and the sense organs; but considerable changes have also been introduced in the description of the methods of studying the physiology of muscle and nerve, and not only have a large number of new illustrations - for the most part in the form of diagrams - been added, but all the original figures have been redrawn, so that the work has taken the character of a new book, which it has been thought proper to furnish with another name. The descriptions of the methods employed are founded upon twelve years' experience in conducting the classes of Practical Physiology in the University of Edinburgh. These classes are of two kinds, elementary and advanced, and some of the methods described are intended only for advanced students. But no attempt has been made in the work to discriminate between the experiments which are expected to be performed by the one or the other grade. Such selection can be best made by the teacher of the subject, and would be regulated by the requirements of the students and the nature of the examinations for which they are preparing. Book The Essentials of Experimental Physiology

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Experimental Physiology: For the Use of Students In writing this book my aim has been to give a short account of those experiments which can be carried out by students during classes, together with a selection of experiments suitable for class demonstrations. In the selection of the experiments I have been largely guided by the course of Advanced Practical Physiology given by Professor Halliburton at King's College, which was based upon the Syllabus of Lectures published by Professor J. Burdon Sanderson in 1879, though in several respects I have modified and added to this course. The illustrations are for the most part new. For permission to reproduce several of the figures of instruments I wish to thank Professors McKendrick, Yeo, Halliburton, and Waller. The source of these figures is indicated in each case. The reproductions of the tracings are all new and taken from tracings specially prepared for the purpose. With very few exceptions they are all reproduced the same size as the originals, so that the measurements indicated in the text directly apply to the figures. Those modifications of many of the usual forms of apparatus figured in the text have been made for me by Mr. C. F. Palmer, and are especially designed for class work. The plan of the book varies slightly from that adopted by Professor Schafer and Professor Halliburton in their 'Essentials.' Book An American Text Book on Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book An American Text Book on Physiology Classic Reprint written by Henry Pickering Bowditch and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-16 with total page 1084 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Text-Book on Physiology The collaboration of several teachers in the preparation of an elementary text-book of physiology is unusual, the almost invariable rule heretofore having been for a single author to write the entire book. It does not seem desirable to attempt a discussion of the relative merits and demerits of the two plans, since the method of collaboration is untried in the teaching of physi ology, and there is therefore no basis for a satisfactory comparison. It is a fact, however, that many teachers of physiology in this country have not been altogether satisfied with the text-books at their disposal. Some of the more successful older books have not kept pace with the rapid changes in modern physiology, while few, if any, of the newer books have been uniformly satis factory in their treatment of all parts of this many-sided science. Indeed, the literature of experimental physiology is so great that it would seem to be almost impossible for any one teacher to keep thoroughly informed on all topics. This fact undoubtedly accounts for some of the defects of our present text-books, and it is hoped that one of the advantages derived from the col laboration method is that, owing to the less voluminous literature to be consulted, each author has been enabled to base his elementary account upon a comprehensive knowledge of the part of the subject assigned to him. Those who are acquainted with the difficulty of making a satisfactory elementary presentation of the complex-and oftentimes unsettled questions of physiology must agree that authoritative statements and generalizations, such as are fre quently necessary in text-books if they are to leave any impression at all upon the student, are usually trustworthy in proportion to the fulness of informa tion possessed by the writer. Book A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine Classic Reprint written by Winfield S. Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Experimental Physiology for Students of Medicine This method of presenting the experimental sciences - chemistry, physics, and the biological sciences, including physiology, psychology, pharmacology, and pathology - is an expensive one, both as to the time and the money involved in it; but from the standpoint of pedagogy it is more economical than the text-book method, because it leads directly and surely to definite results. In answer to the question as to just what these results are which follow the modern laboratory method of instruction, it may be stated first of all that it cultivates in the student the capacity of close and accurate Observation; it affords an opportunity for valuable practice in the systematic recording of the Observations; it develops the power of logical thought in drawing tenable conclusions from the observed data; and, in the formulation of conclusions, it stimulates the ability to express the thoughts in concise and unambiguous terms. In the second place, practice of this kind makes the student independent and furnishes him with just the mental equipment needed for later life in whatever line his activities may be directed. If such an education is more important for one profession than another, the medical profession is certainly the one in which its importance is greatest. The physics, chemistry, and biology studied in preparation for medicine, and the physiology, pharmacology, and pathology of the medical course should give the student a most admirable equipment for dealing with the complex problems of clinical practice. Book A Laboratory Manual of Experimental Physiology Including General Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Laboratory Manual of Experimental Physiology Including General Physiology Classic Reprint written by Lois McPhedran Fraser and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Experimental Physiology (Including General Physiology) Experimental physiology is now recognized as a fundamental subject in the curriculum of the medical student and as one having a most important place in the training of the student of biology. In the medical course, the physiological laboratory serves as the portal to the clinic; as the testing ground where the student may try for himself in how far the known laws of physics and chemistry can be successfully employed to explain the normal working of the human machine. NO more can theoretical study, or demonstra tion, by itself supply a correct understanding of the functions of the living body than could similar methods in training an engineer to understand an engine. Attempts to rectify, by Operations or by drugs, functional derangement in the diseased animal without a practical knowledge of the normal working of the various organs, both isolated and as a whole must be as unjustifiable as attempting to repair a complicated piece of machinery would be by any other than a practical engineer. In the training of the biologist, experimental physiology finds its value because it teaches how to interpret the relationship be tween structure and function. For the advancement of physio logical knowledge it is essential that the functions of the lower animals should be more intensively investigated by those who have been trained in the methods of the experimental physiologist. Download or read book A Textbook of Experimental Physiology written by N. H. Alcock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Experimental Physiology: For Students of Medicine In the revised regulations of the University of London, a syllabus of Practical Physiology has been prescribed, which is more in accordance with the actual requirements of the student of medicine. The present work is an attempt to put this syllabus into practice. I have carefully gone through all the exercises with the authors, and I believe not only that the work contains the practical training required by the University of London of its candidates, but also that the student who has conscientiously worked through the. Exercises, will find that the knowledge gained thereby will materially assist him in his future work, in the comprehension and treatment of disease. This, at any rate, is the idea which has inspired the writers of the book. In the first edition of a book of this character, it is impossible to avoid faults both of omission and commission, which can only be brought to light when the book is actually used in practical classwork. Book A Class Book of Practical Physiology

Download or read book A Class Book of Practical Physiology written by De Burgh Birch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Class Book of Practical Physiology: Including Histology, Chemical and Experimental Physiology This volume represents in a more formal setting the notes which the author has been in the habit of issuing to students attending the ordinary course of Practical Physiology in this College. The aim has been to supply the student with concise directions for performing the work which he has to do with his own hands in class. The choice of methods has been necessarily governed by their adaptability to class purposes, and as much as possible also by their simplicity. In order that the student may read beforehand the work that is to engage his attention at the next meeting of the class, the subject matter has been divided into lessons, which are indicated by marginal numbers. Illustrations have been omitted from the section on Histology, as it is essential that the student should systematically practice drawing from the preparation itself uninfluenced by the suggestions of a drawing ready to his hand. He is thus led to form his own opinion of what he himself sees, and is encouraged to cultivate and to rely upon his own powers of interpretation. For the same reasons tracings have been omitted from the Experimental Section. A system of abbreviated references to the Appendix has been employed in those cases in which sections of tissues are given to the class ready for mounting, by which means the methods of preparation can be found in full. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Plant Physiology: For Beginners The book is intended essentially as a guide to practical work, and every experiment should therefore be care fully worked through, not merely read. The best plan for a teacher to follow, in all physiological work, is to present a problem to the children, and encourage them to suggest the method by which it may be solved and to draw their own conclusions from the observations made. Download or read book Quarterly Journal of Experimental Physiology Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by E. A. Schäfer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Quarterly Journal of Experimental Physiology, Vol. 1 As indicator I have used, not the mechanical, but the electrical response of a muscle recording on a photographic plate, moving at a known and equable rate, the movement imparted to the meniscus of the capillary electrometer the moment an electrical change occurs at a spot connected with this instrument. The fact that the electrical response in the organ, as well as its manifestation in the recording instrument, occurs without any delay as soon as the recording spot is reached, and that it is not necessary for the whole muscle to be implicated before a record can be obtained, obviates what seems to me to be the principal objection to Wundt's experiments. The electrical response has the further advantage over the mechanical response, for the measurement of brief time intervals between different events occurring in a muscle, that the effect not only begins without delay, but, when in existence, outlasts the stimulus (which, either directly or indirectly, produces it) by a so much shorter time. A second effect, therefore, occurring in the muscle only a few thousandths of a second after a first, would have quite a distinct manifestation when recorded by such an instrument as the capillary electrometer, whereas in the record of the contraction of the muscle two such effects would be merged into one. This being so, there should be no difficulty in recording on the same photographic plate, and measuring the time interval between, the two electrical effects produced at one and the same spot of the muscle in response to simultaneous excitation of efferent and afferent nerve respectively; nor is there any such difficulty, provided that the cord is sufficiently sensitive for an effectual response to be obtained from it at all when the stimulus applied to the afferent nerve is single and instan taneous, as for the purpose in hand it must be. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physiology: Illustrated by Experiment WE have all laughed at the ridiculous answers given to examination questions in physiology. But such absurd state ments ought to arouse something more than laughter. They should give rise to serious thought. What do they signify That children make gross blunders But they do not make such wild statements about things which they have seen and handled. These absurd answers are a sad comment on the method of teaching. They point not to stupidity in the child, but to shortcoming in instruction. Many years ago the writer became convinced of the utter futility of mere book-work in teaching physiology; he sought all available means of making the subject clear and full of meaning to his pupils. These illustrations, experiments, and dissections have multiplied; in the hope that what has been so useful to him may also prove helpful to others, the author presents them in this form to his fellow-teachers. Book Human Physiology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Human Physiology Classic Reprint written by William Furneaux and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology This work is intended for those who desire an easy introduction to die study of the Human Frame. The matter embraces those parts of the subject which arc contained in the Elementary Syllabus of the Science and Art Department, but is not confined strictly within those limits. A short chapter on the Ear has been added (thus completing the outline of the organs of special sense), and also another on the Larynx and the Voice. And again, although the students working according to this Syllabus are not required to obtain any 'information upon points of structure needing the use of the compound microscope' with the exception of the characters of the corpuscles of the blood, yet in many other instances such information has been given. It is eminently desirable that the student should avail himself of every opportunity of making his study thoroughly practical. The author therefore has given, here and there, many hints as to how he should proceed in easy dissections; and has introduced a number of simple experiments, so that the knowledge gained may be of a sound character. It is too often felt that such practical and experimental methods of acquiring information are roundabout and tedious; but the author's experience has taught him to affirm that it is the readiest, surest, and certainly the most pleasant way of attaining the end in view. Occasionally the ovaries were kept overnight. In an ice-chest at a temperature of from 3 to 7 C. The method which I have used for making the extracts has been as follows - The corpora lutea. Were shelled out from the Ovaries by the aid of two pairs of forceps; the capsule or theca of each corpus luteum was then peeled Off, and the remainder Of the gland was minced and thoroughly pounded in a mortar until it formed a nearly homogeneous paste. Part of the paste was taken and weighed, mixed with a definite amount of Locke's solution, and boiled for a few minutes. It was then rapidly cooled, filtered, and made up to the original volume by the addition of distilled water. The reaction of such an extract is generally found to be neutral. This may be spoken.
