Book Experimental Investigation of the Wave turbulence Interaction at Low Reynolds Numbers in a Horizontal Open channel Flow

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Wave turbulence Interaction at Low Reynolds Numbers in a Horizontal Open channel Flow written by Evangelos Stamatiou and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wave-turbulence interaction was experimentally investigated in an open-channel with a shear-free wavy surface using the photochromic dye activation (PDA) technique. In the experiments conducted, two-dimensional waves of different amplitudes, wavelengths and frequencies were superimposed on a turbulent open-channel flow via a mechanical wavemaker. Within the range of Reynolds numbers ($\rm\bar{Re}\sb{h}$ = 800-1600 based on liquid height) investigated, the results showed that waves decreased wall turbulence levels with increases in the wave amplitude and frequency in comparison with the wldisturbed flow. Flow visualization studies conducted indicated that the general qualitative appearance of turbulence in wavy flows is similar to those in non-wavy flows.

Book An Experimental Investigation of Free surface Structures in Turbulent Channel Flow at Low Reynolds Numbers

This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow visualization using photochromic dye activation (PDA) and image processing was performed in a smooth, open channel to study the turbulence beneath the shearfree and waveless, gas-liquid interface. Experiments were done over a low-Reynolds number range of 800 to 2,400 based on liquid depth and a Froude number range of 0.25 to 0.32. Turbulence quantities obtained from statistical analysis of the instantaneous streamwise velocity profiles include the mean velocity distribution, probability density function, turbulence intensity, skewness and flatness factors and Reynolds stress. On the video recordings, coherent motions of large-scale free-surface structures were qualitatively observed, namely upwellings, downdrafts, spiral eddies and streamwise vortices. Visual counting of wall events showed that the scaling of their temporal frequency with the inner variables of viscous shear stress and viscosity improved with increasing Reynolds number, yielding average ejection and bursting periods of 39 and 119 for the highest Reynolds number, respectively.

Book Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Developing Turbulent Flow Over a Wavy Wall

Download or read book Experimental and Numerical Investigation of Developing Turbulent Flow Over a Wavy Wall written by Vinicius Martins Segunda and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent flow over a wavy wall in a horizontal channel is investigated by experimental and numerical methods. The thorough problem understanding can advance turbulent flow physics knowledge for separating and reattaching flows. Another important consideration is the performance evaluation of mathematical models used in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes to predict the flow characteristics. This study explores numerical models because they are critically important to the design and performance evaluation of engineering systems. The experimental data are obtained to provide repository data and more insights into the flow physics considering both the flow development and fully periodic regions. A channel with a wavy bottom wall is considered for this study, and its main characteristic is a value of 10 for the ratio between the wave length and wave amplitude. A high-resolution particle image velocimetry (PIV) system is used to obtain detailed measurements of velocity at Reynolds number of 5040, 8400, 10700 and 13040 in both the developing and fully periodic regions. The numerical simulations are performed with a commercial CFD code using four eddy viscosity turbulence models and three Second-Moment Closure (SMC) turbulence models. This work assessed the predictive accuracy of a total of seven turbulence models. The experimental study covered a lack of data for the flow development within the waves, prior the periodic condition region, and it supported the turbulence models evaluation. The experiments provided features of the flow such as the recirculation regions, Reynolds stresses, and turbulent kinetic energy production at different channel locations. A comprehensive comparison between models and experimental data revealed a significant dependency on the turbulence model formulation and on the wall treatment selection for the flow development and fully periodic regions predictions.

Book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions

Download or read book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions written by Holger Babinsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.
