Book Experimental and Computational Investigation of a RF Plasma Micro Thruster Preprint

Download or read book Experimental and Computational Investigation of a RF Plasma Micro Thruster Preprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A prototype RF plasma micro-thruster has been investigated numerically and experimentally. The experimental results were obtained on a thrust stand capable of micro-Newton resolution. Thrust and mass flow (hence specific impulse) were measured for an argon propellant at mass flows ranging from 0.4 to 5.5 mg/sec. An increase to the cold gas thrust of up to 20% was observed for a discharge frequency of 100 MHz and an input power of 70 W. Propulsive efficiency was seen to increase both experimentally and numerically for increasing mass flow and decreasing discharge frequency.

Book Pulsed Inductive Thruster Development Advanced Electric Propulsion Technology High Thrust Volume 2 Supplement

Download or read book Pulsed Inductive Thruster Development Advanced Electric Propulsion Technology High Thrust Volume 2 Supplement written by C. L. Dailey and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of an experimental investigation of the operation and efficiency of a large impulsive plasma thruster. The thruster uses a one-meter diameter flat spiral coil through which current is pulsed from a 4000 Joule capacitor bank using a spark gap switch. The plasma is driven through inductive coupling rather than with electrodes so as to avoid erosion and energy loss mechanisms that might be undesirable for spacecraft uses. The object of this work was to verify the results of the final report, (AFRPL-TR-80-67, to which this is a supplement), and establish more data on thruster efficiency as a function of specific impulse. The original final report indicated the thruster's efficiency was 45% at 1570 sec Isp. This supplement confirms those figures and reports additional performance figure of 50% at 1590 sec Isp, 62% at 1960 Isp, and 67% at 2250 sec Isp. (Author).

Book Pulsed Inductive Thruster Development Advanced Electric Propulsion Technology High Thrust

Download or read book Pulsed Inductive Thruster Development Advanced Electric Propulsion Technology High Thrust written by C. L. Dailey and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of an experimental investigation of the operation and efficiency of a large impulsive plasma thruster. The thruster uses a one-meter diameter flat spiral coil through which current is pulsed by discharging a 4000 Joule capacitor bank using a spark gap switch. The plasma is driven through inductive coupling rather than with electrodes so as to avoid erosion and energy loss mechanisms that might be undesirable for spacecraft uses. The object of the work was to compare thruster efficiency with pulsed gas injection to the 'static fill' efficiency of a similar one-meter, diameter, coil thruster tested earlier. Using only the first half-cycle impulse, the 'static fill' efficiency had been 38% at 1730 seconds Isp. Using the impulse of three half-cycles for the present pulsed injection test (0.190, 0.033 and 0.011 Newton-seconds) the measured thrust efficiency was 45% at 1570 seconds Isp. (Author).

Book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Hall Thruster Miniaturization

Download or read book Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Hall Thruster Miniaturization written by Noah Zachary Warner and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) These trends were confirmed using a computational simulation. An analytical model of electron temperature predicts that, due to a larger relative exposed wall area, the peak temperature inside the MHT-9 is higher than that of the D-55, resulting in greater ion losses and beam divergence. The inability to maintain geometric similarity was a result of the inherent challenges of maintaining magnetic field shape and strength at small scale, and this difficulty is identified as the fundamental limitation of Hall thruster miniaturization.
