Book excerpt: The work described in this report was aimed primarily at understanding the characteristics of the conduction electron states at the Fermi surface of metals. In particular, during this grant period the author has performed various studies of the metals beryllium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, white tin, nickel, iron, and calcium. The author has completed extensive redesign and construction of experimental apparatus which allows one to measure signals as small as 0.003 micromicrovolts at temperatures as low as 0.02K in magnetic fields as high as 59 KG, The author has used some of the low temperature apparatus to study the properties of positive and negative ions in liquid He4 in the range of temperatures from about 0.28 degree K to 1.0 degree K. Book Metal Surface Electron Physics

Download or read book Metal Surface Electron Physics written by A. Kiejna and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-03-15 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last thirty years metal surface physics, or generally surface science, has come a long way due to the development of vacuum technology and the new surface sensitive probes on the experimental side and new methods and powerful computational techniques on the theoretical side. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to the essential theoretical aspects of the atomic and electronic structure of metal surfaces and interfaces. The book gives some theoretical background to students of experimental and theoretical physics to allow further exploration into research in metal surface physics. The book consists of three parts. The first part is devoted to classical description of geometry and structure of metal crystals and their surfaces and surface thermodynamics including properties of small metallic particles. Part two deals with quantum-mechanical description of electronic properties of simple metals. It starts from the free electron gas description and introduces the many body effects in the framework of the density functional theory, in order to discuss the basic surface electronic properties of simple metals. This part outlines also properties of alloy surfaces, the quantum size effect and small metal clusters. Part three gives a succinct description of metal surfaces in contact with foreign atoms and surfaces. It treats the work function changes due to alkali metal adsorption on metals, adhesion between metals and discusses the universal aspects of the binding energy curves. In each case extensive reference lists are provided.

Download or read book Fermi Surface Effects written by Jun Kondo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the proceedings of the Tsukuba Institute '87 on Fermi Surface Effects, which was held August 27-29, 1987, at Tsukuba Science City in Japan. The topic of the Institute, Fermi surface effects, is one of the fascinating subjects of solid-state physics. It has been known since Sommerfeld's work that the conduction electrons of metals constitute a degenerate Fermi system, and it has also been recognized that the occu pation number of the electron states has a discontinuity across the Fermi surface. Several basic properties of metal electrons stem from this fact. Furthermore, it gives rise to a singular response of the metal electrons to local and dynamical perturbations of low frequency. Such singular behav ior of the metal electrons is called a Fermi surface effect. In his opening address, printed as the Foreword, Professor R. Kubo described Fermi sur face effects as due to "wild" behavior of the metal electrons. The Institute co~sisted of five invited lectures, each of which was two hours long and dealt with theoretical aspects of a subject related to Fermi surface effects. Each lecturer is an expert in the field, and gave an in tensive treatment of his own subject. The experiment of inviting only very few lecturers and allotting them ample time for both presentation and discussion seems to have been successful. This Institute, which was sponsored by the Japan Industrial Technology Association, will probably be followed by other institutes, forming a series.

Book Unconventional Superconductors

Download or read book Unconventional Superconductors written by Gernot Goll and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive summary of experiments that are especially suited to reveal the order-parameter symmetry of unconventional superconductors. It briefly introduces readers to the basic theoretical concepts and terms of unconventional superconductivity, followed by a detailed overview of experimental techniques and results investigating the superconducting energy gap and phase, plus the pairing symmetry. This review includes measurements of specific heat, thermal conductivity, penetration depth and nuclearmagnetic resonance and muon-spin rotation experiments. Further, point-contact and tunnelling spectroscopy and Josephson experiments are addressed. Current understanding is reviewed from the experimental point of view. With an appendix offering five tables with almost 200 references that summarize the present results from ambient pressure heavy-fermion and noncopper-oxide superconductors, the monograph provides a valuable resource for further studies in this field.
