Book excerpt: Excerpt from Experimental Investigation of the Action of Medicines, Vol. 1: Circulation The insufficiency of present modes of treatment, and the urgent necessity which exists for an accurate knowledge of pathology and pharmacology, are shown by the manner in which any new remedy is seized upon and applied in all sorts of cases, even in those where a knowledge of the morbid processes going on, and of the action of the remedy itself would at once have indicated that harm, and not benefit. Book A Textbook of Pharmacology and Therapeutics

Download or read book A Textbook of Pharmacology and Therapeutics written by Arthur R. Cushny and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 760 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A d104book of Pharmacology and Therapeutics: Or the Action of Drugs in Health and Disease During the eighteen months which have elapsed since the appearance of the second edition, several important advances have been made in pharmacology, necessitating corresponding changes in the text. The most interesting of these advances is the authoritative and, it is to be hoped, final determination of the food value of alcohol, which has been treated in more detail than in former editions. The increasing use of cocaine as a local anaesthetic, and the introduction of the subarachnoid method of medication required an expansion of the chapter on this drug, and the same may be said of the pages devoted to the adrenal gland. Numerous minor changes have been made to bring the text up to date and several new illustrations have been added. Some experience in teaching pharmacology has led me to devote the last part of the term to a review, in which the drugs are classified according to their therapeutic uses. There is then an opportunity to compare the relative advantages of, and the special indications for different remedies, which is necessarily absent in the earlier part of the course. In order to facilitate this part of the work, such a classification has been appended to this edition. I have again to express my gratitude to the teachers of pharmacology for the welcome accorded the first two editions, as well as for many helpful suggestions for this one. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD WINNER • The first full history of Black America’s shocking mistreatment as unwilling and unwitting experimental subjects at the hands of the medical establishment. No one concerned with issues of public health and racial justice can afford not to read this masterful book. "[Washington] has unearthed a shocking amount of information and shaped it into a riveting, carefully documented book." —New York Times From the era of slavery to the present day, starting with the earliest encounters between Black Americans and Western medical researchers and the racist pseudoscience that resulted, Medical Apartheid details the ways both slaves and freedmen were used in hospitals for experiments conducted without their knowledge—a tradition that continues today within some black populations. It reveals how Blacks have historically been prey to grave-robbing as well as unauthorized autopsies and dissections. Moving into the twentieth century, it shows how the pseudoscience of eugenics and social Darwinism was used to justify experimental exploitation and shoddy medical treatment of Blacks. Shocking new details about the government’s notorious Tuskegee experiment are revealed, as are similar, less-well-known medical atrocities conducted by the government, the armed forces, prisons, and private institutions. The product of years of prodigious research into medical journals and experimental reports long undisturbed, Medical Apartheid reveals the hidden underbelly of scientific research and makes possible, for the first time, an understanding of the roots of the African American health deficit. At last, it provides the fullest possible context for comprehending the behavioral fallout that has caused Black Americans to view researchers—and indeed the whole medical establishment—with such deep distrust.

Book Experimental and Quasi Experimental Designs for Research

Download or read book Experimental and Quasi Experimental Designs for Research written by Donald T. Campbell and published by Ravenio Books. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We shall examine the validity of 16 experimental designs against 12 common threats to valid inference. By experiment we refer to that portion of research in which variables are manipulated and their effects upon other variables observed. It is well to distinguish the particular role of this chapter. It is not a chapter on experimental design in the Fisher (1925, 1935) tradition, in which an experimenter having complete mastery can schedule treatments and measurements for optimal statistical efficiency, with complexity of design emerging only from that goal of efficiency. Insofar as the designs discussed in the present chapter become complex, it is because of the intransigency of the environment: because, that is, of the experimenter’s lack of complete control.
