Experiments are compared with numerical prediction based on Bowman's reaction scheme including Zel'dovich mechanism. Agreement between experimental density profiles and numerical prediction is very good. Methane absorption outside the boundary layer agrees well with computation based on isobaric combustion. Measurements in the boundary layer, albeit with insufficient space resolution, are in accord with the predicted trends.

For heavy gas bubbles, the acoustic impedance mismatch results in a focusing of the transmitted shock wave known as the shock focusing phenomenon. The increase in temperature and pressure that result from this phenomenon are used to ignite a combustible gas mixture near the downstream pole of the bubble. The characteristics of the ignition and propagation of the reaction front are studied experimentally in conjunction with the hydrodynamic bubble morphology.
