This book was released on 1967 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical analysis is presented for calculating the normal force and center of pressure on plane wing/body combinations exhibiting leading edge separation. The mathematical model for the separated flow involves the shedding of a number of discrete vortex pairs along the wing leading edge, each pair satisfying the Kutta condition at the position of shedding. The subsequent lateral positions of these vortex filaments are calculated step by step, so that the rolling up of the vortex sheet is taken into account. Hence, the method predicts the chordwise normal-force distributions as well as the vortex sheet shapes over the configuration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Rudders and Control Surfaces guides naval architects from the first principles of the physics of control surface operation, to the use of experimental and empirical data and applied computational fluid dynamic modelling of rudders and control surfaces. The empirical and theoretical methods applied to control surface design are described in depth and their use explained through application to particular cases. The design procedures are complemented with a number of worked practical examples of rudder and control surface design.• The only text dedicated to marine control surface design• Provides experimental, theoretical and applied design information valuable for practising engineers, designers and students• Accompanied by an online extensive experimental database together with software for theoreticalpredictions and design development

Download or read book Marine Rudders Hydrofoils and Control Surfaces written by Anthony F. Molland and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The course keeping and manoeuvring requirements for a ship are governed by international maritime law. In assessing and predicting the course keeping and manoeuvring capabilities of the ship, knowledge is required of the rudder forces necessary to keep a course or facilitate a manoeuvre. The second edition of Marine Rudders, Hydrofoils and Control Surfaces includes up-to-date data and rudder design techniques that enable the rudder forces to be estimated, together with any interactions due to the hull and propeller. The new edition describes the design and application of hydrofoils including shape adaptive design, and their applications including hydrofoil craft, yachts, and kite surfing hydrofoils. The professional will also face the need to design control surfaces for motion control, such as roll and pitch, for surface vessels and submersibles, and the book contains the necessary techniques and data to carry out these tasks. This book is for practicing naval architects and marine engineers, small craft designers, yacht designers, hydrodynamicists, undergraduate and postgraduate students of naval architecture, maritime engineering and ship science, and the broader engineering community involved in the development of marine craft that rely on the generation of 'lift' such as control engineers and aerodynamicists. - Describes techniques for analyzing the performance characteristics of rudders, hydrofoils, and control surfaces - Includes extensive design data and worked examples for the analysis of rudder, hydrofoil and control surface performance - Provides a detailed examination of the design of hydrofoils
Download or read book A Concept of the Vortex Lift of Sharp edge Delta Wings Based on a Leading edge suction Analogy written by Edward Charles Polhamus and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concept for the calculation of the vortex lift of sharp-edge delta wings is presented and compared with experimental data. The concept is based on an analogy between the vortex lift and the leading-edge suction associated with the potential flow about the leading-edge. This concept, when combined with potential-flow theory modified to include the nonlinearities associated with the exact boundary condition and the loss of the lift component of the leading-edge suction, provides excellent prediction of the total lift for a wide range of delta wings up to angles of attack 20[degrees] or greater.

Download or read book Basic Research and Technologies for Two Stage to Orbit Vehicles written by Dieter Jacob and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2006-03-06 with total page 683 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on basic aspects of future reusable space transportation systems and covering overall design, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, flight dynamics, propulsion, materials, and structures, this report presents some of the most recent results obtained in these disciplines. The authors are members of three Collaborative Research Centers in Aachen, Munich and Stuttgart concerned with hypersonic vehicles. A major part of the research presented here deals with experimental and numerical aerodynamic topics ranging from low speed to hypersonic flow past the external configuration and through inlet and nozzle. Mathematicians and engineers jointly worked on aspects of flight mechanics like trajectory optimization, stability, control and flying qualities. Structural research and development was predominantly coupled to the needs for high temperature resistant structures for space vehicles.
