Book Experimental Investigation of High Mach Number 3D Hydrodynamic Jets at the National Ignition Facility

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of High Mach Number 3D Hydrodynamic Jets at the National Ignition Facility written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first hydrodynamics experiments were performed on the National Ignition Facility. A supersonic jet was formed via the interaction of a laser driven shock (≈40 Mbars) with 2D and 3D density perturbations. The temporal evolution of the jet's spatial scales and ejected mass were measured with point projection x-ray radiography. Measurements of the large-scale features and mass are in good agreement with 2D and 3D numerical simulations. These experiments are the first quantitative measurements of the evolution of 3D supersonic jets and provide insight into their 3D behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is over a quarter of a century since the discovery of out?ows from young stars. The intervening years have led to remarkable advances in our understanding of this phenomenon. Much of the progress can be attributed to advances in facilities and technologies, including not only larger telescopes but also improved instrument and detector performance. In addition protostellar out?ows have now been imaged from the ground and space at high spatial resolution, e. g. with HST, and at a wide - riety of wavelengths from X-rays to radio waves, revealing more and more about their physics. This veritable revolution in observation has been accompanied by an exponential growth in our ability to numerically simulate the launching and pro- gation of jets. Codes continue to improve: they now incorporate more physics and are increasingly ef?cient through, for example, techniques such as adaptive mesh re?nement and the use of parallel processing in cluster environments. Simulating the launching and propagation of a jet all the way from the vicinity of the star up to 4 several thousand AU (a size range of10 ) is now much closer. In more recent times, developments in observation, theory and numerical s- ulation have been joined by laboratory jet experiments reproducing, on centimetre scales, that which is seen in astrophysics to stretch for several parsecs.

Book Experimental Investigation of the Hydrodynamics of a Plunging Two phase Plane Jet

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Hydrodynamics of a Plunging Two phase Plane Jet written by Brian Kern and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plane two-phase (liquid + gas) jets occur in plunging jet bubble columns, and have potential applications in the inertial confinement fusion systems. In this investigation, some basic hydrodynamic and stability characteristics of these jets are studied. An experimental test facility is used where plunging plane two-phase jets are generated using air and water. The jet inlet flow characteristics are systematically varied. The void fraction distribution in the jet is measured at several locations along the jet, using the Gamma-Ray densitometry technique. The jet thickness is also measured. The void distribution profiles are then used for the qualitative assessment of the internal flow and phase interaction phenomena in the jet. The limits of the stability of the jet are also experimentally specified. Theoretical modeling of the macroscopic flow phenomena is also addressed.

Book Interaction of Ultra High Mach Number Jets

Download or read book Interaction of Ultra High Mach Number Jets written by S. L. Petrie and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical examination of the shock wave structure and flow variables in the interaction region of two high Mach number air jets was accomplished. A special wind tunnel facility was assembled to include two axisymmetric nozzles with the angle between the nozzle center lines adjustable to 5, 10, 15 deg. The experimental studies were also conducted with various jet Mach numbers, i.e., a Mach 9 primary jet impinged by a Mach 7, 9, 11 jet. A theoretical analysis was also conducted to estimate the angle of impingement and slip stream length, thereby aiding the sizing analysis required for the construction of this special test facility.

This book was released on 2005-08-10 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past several years, research teams around the world have developed astrophysics-relevant utilizing high energy-density facilities such as intense lasers and z-pinches. Research is underway in many areas, such as compressible hydrodynamic mixing, strong shock phenomena, radiation flow, radiative shocks and jets, complex opacities, equations o fstat, and relativistic plasmas. Beyond this current research and the papers it is producing, plans are being made for the application, to astrophysics-relevant research, of the 2 MJ National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; the 600 kj Ligne d'Intergration Laser (LIL) and the 2 MJ Laser Megajoule (LMJ) in Bordeaux, France; petawatt-range lasers now under construction around the world; and current and future Z pinches. The goal of this conference and these proceedings is to continue focusing and attention on this emerging research area. The conference brought together different scientists interested in this emerging new filed, with topics covering: - Hydrodynamic instabilities in astrophysics, - Supernovae and supernova remnant evolution, - Aastrophysical shocks, blast waves, and jets, - Stellar opacities, - Radiation and thermal transport, - Dense plasma atomic physics and EOS - X-ray photoionized plasmas, - Ultrastrong magnetic field generation Reprinted from Astrophysics and Space Science, volume 298, Nos. 1-2, 2005

Book Ground and Flight Evaluation of a Small Scale Inflatable Winged Aircraft

Download or read book Ground and Flight Evaluation of a Small Scale Inflatable Winged Aircraft written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A small-scale, instrumented research aircraft was flown to investigate the flight characteristics of inflatable wings. Ground tests measured the static structural characteristics of the wing at different inflation pressures, and these results compared favorably with analytical predictions. A research-quality instrumentation system was assembled, largely from commercial off-the-shelf components, and installed in the aircraft. Initial flight operations were conducted with a conventional rigid wing having the same dimensions as the inflatable wing. Subsequent flights were conducted with the inflatable wing. Research maneuvers were executed to identify the trim, aerodynamic performance, and longitudinal stability and control characteristics of the vehicle in its different wing configurations. For the angle-of-attack range spanned in this flight program.
