Book excerpt: A theoretical and experimental investigation was undertaken of heat transfer effects at the surface of a flat plate on which combustion is occurring in a supersonic air stream. A simplified theoretical model is developed which leads to expressions for the heat transfer coefficient and heat transfer rate at the surface. The experimental technique used to obtain heat transfer parameters is described. The experimental tests were conducted at Mach number 3.1 using the pyrophoric fuel triethylaluminum. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental results indicates that the former yields order-of-magnitude estimates of the heat transfer coefficient and rate which are satisfactory for purposes of engineering design. The theory is then used to obtain estimates of heat transfer parameters at the surface of a cone-shaped interceptor executing a coast trajectory. The results are shown to be well correlated by an empirical expression similar to that encountered in the literature for turbulent non-reacting flow over flat plates having both constant and variable surface temperatures. The transition region was investigated at nominal plate temperature levels of 60, 100, 140, 180, and 260 degrees F and depicted in a series of curves of transition Reynolds numbers, based on boundary-layer dimensions and fluid properties evaluated alternatively at free-stream and wall temperatures. The average skin-friction coefficient over the laminar portion of the boundary layer was determined.

Book excerpt: An investigation was made of the transfer of heat and the equilibrium temperature of a flat plate of limited thickness (limited in comparison with the mean molecular free path in the free gas stream), streamlined by a supersonic flow of rarefied air at a zero angle of attack. The models of the plate were of sufficient span to permit reference of the results of the investigations to the case of plane streamlining (plates of infinite span). The measurements of the heat-transfer coefficient and of the equilibrium temperatures were carried out at Mach number values ranging from 2.6 to 9. The investigations encompassed various streamlining conditions, beginning from the case in which the entire surface of the plate is subjected to virtually free-molecular gas flow and concluding with the case in which the flow of the gas over virtually the entire plate corresponds to the Navier-Stokes-Fourier continuum regime. It is found that upon the interaction of the gas flows streamlining different sections of the surface of such bodies, there can appear local, relatively narrow zones of raised or lowered values of specific heat flow. These heat flows were measured using heat-indicating dye, and the flow was visualized using erodable dye applied to the surface in the form of individual points. The first aim of this work is to show the qualitative peculiarities of heat exchange and gas flow on such complex bodies. (Author).
