Book Studies of the Ignition and Combustion of Boron Particles for Air Augmented Rocket Applications

Download or read book Studies of the Ignition and Combustion of Boron Particles for Air Augmented Rocket Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the present work has been to characterize the nature of the primary exhaust from fuel-rich motors containing boron, and to study its ignition and combustion characteristics, especially as compared to the known information for pure boron. Section II of the present report describes (a) the rocket-motor firing program in which the condensed exhaust (CE) from two different composite ammonium perchlorate propellants was collected, and (b) the results of thermodynamic computations for these formulations. Sections III and IV contain the results of the physical (microscopy, density measurement) and chemical analyses of the CE. Section V deals with combustion of the CE. Finally, Sections VI and VII report the results of modeling studies describing the ignition of single boron particles in hot gas streams and propagation of flames in boron-oxygen-nitrogen dust clouds.

Book Combustion Studies of Fuel Rich Propellants

Download or read book Combustion Studies of Fuel Rich Propellants written by Merrill K. King and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ignition and combustion studies of boron, and highly magnesium-loaded formulations for air-agumented rocket applications are reported. Ignition and combustion characteristics of pure boron and of boron-containing particulate ejecta from highly-boron-loaded fuel-rich primary motor formulations were studied. Physical and chemical characteristics of the motor ejecta were studied and their ignition/combustion characteristics were compared to those for pure boron. The minimum surrounding temperature for ignition for the two materials was nearly identical but the ignition delay time was considerably lower for the motor ejecta material. Burning times for comparable size particles of each type were equal within experimental error. In the size range of interest (2 to 10 equal micron diameter), the burning was observed to be characterized by a d1-law (kinetics-limited combustion). Thermodynamic screening of possible highly-magnesium-loaded fuel-rich propellants was carried out and candidate castable and pressed formulations for air-augmented rocket applications were defined. Several were characterized in terms of their safety and ballistic properties. Experiments were performed to identify the characteristics of the exhaust products from combustion in the absence of air. These experiments indicated that considerable magnesium, with significant fraction of it in the gas phase is produced. The presence of such quantities of magnesium gas should result in excellent combustion of the product streams emanating from these propellants with air in a ramburner. Nozzle plugging and residue formation are possible problem areas.

Book Propellants and Explosives

Download or read book Propellants and Explosives written by Naminosuke Kubota and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2007-02-27 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of the classic on the thermochemistry of combustion now features five new chapters and updated coverage of significant recent developments in the field. Addressing both experimental as well as theoretical aspects, the book covers the thermochemical and combustion characteristics of all important types of energetic materials, such as explosives, propellants, and the new class of pyrolants, as well as related phenomena. It presents the fundamental bases of the energetics of materials, deflagration and detonation, thermochemical process of decomposition and combustion, plus combustion wave structures. The book also goes on to discuss the combustion mechanisms of various types of energetic materials, propellants, and explosives, based on the heat transfer process in the combustion waves. The burning rate models are also presented as an aid to understanding the rate-controlling steps of combustion processes, thus demonstrating the relationships of burning rate versus pressure and initial temperature. As a major topic new to this edition, new propulsion methods such as duct rockets, ramjets, pulse motors and thrusters are described in detail, while appendices on flow field dynamics and shock wave propagation have been added.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2nd International Conference on Space Engineering took place May 7-10, 1969, at Venice, Italy, under the organization of the Centro Studi Trasporti Missilistici and the Association pour l'Etude et la Recherche Astronautique et Cosmique. Its purpose was to bring together those interested in the technological development of space components, to exchange information by the presentation of papers and to discuss present problems and future trends, and to this end forty-eight papers were presented by distinguished experts from all over the world. The papers were selected from as wide a background as possible, approximately an equal number coming from the academic and research establishments as from industry. The principal criterion for their selection was that they should contribute to the knowledge of Space Engineering, and have application either to the improve ment of current technologies or to the design of more advanced systems for the future. Six pertinent sessions were planned which covered the major areas of interest: (1) Structures and Materials, where three important papers were presented; (2) Guidance and Control Systems, in which six valuable papers were presented, in cluding problems of controlling space ships, details of the inertial guidance system of the ELDO launch vehicle, the attitude control system of the "Europa 2"; (3) Propellants and Combustion, where eleven papers described recent work on solid and liquid rocket engines, advanced fuels and oxidizers, effects of additives, propellant injection, propellant expulsion techniques; (4) Propulsion, in which session ten papers

Book Air Augmented Rocket Fixed Fuel Flow Combustion Characterization Program

Download or read book Air Augmented Rocket Fixed Fuel Flow Combustion Characterization Program written by Jerry L. Fields and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program demonstrated that reliable, consistent combustion efficiency data could be obtained independently at different facilities. The detailed combustion efficiency performance of two Boron loaded fuel rich propellants was mapped over an air-to-fuel ratio range from 10 to 40 and a ramburner air-only pressure range from 13 to 40 psia. Two highly loaded Boron propellants were used. Testing was conducted at three facilities. Six inch subscale hardware was utilized and a coaxial mixing configuration chosen. Data analysis procedures were refined and error sources (particularly fuel flow rate uncertainties) minimized. The averaged combustion efficiency data from all three facilities fell within the computed error bands, + or - 5.5 percent. Significant A/F dependence was found for combustion efficiency for the two propellants. The effect of fuel generator pressure on combustion efficiency was briefly investigated and found to be negligible. Finally, a propellant comparison was made and ARC 256A had generally better combustion efficiency performance and a higher theoretical heating value, leading to its selection as the superior propellant.
