Book Experimental Investigation of a Fan Spray Using Laser Diffraction and Phase Doppler Instruments

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of a Fan Spray Using Laser Diffraction and Phase Doppler Instruments written by M. Dannehl and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the experimental work reported here, laser Doppler anemometry was used for "point" measurements of bivariate distributions of velocity and drop size (LDVS), and diffraction sizemetry (DSM) was used for line-of-sight measurements of drop size in sprays of water. Laser light sheet photographs were used to determine the spray geometry. The measurement positions were chosen so that the mean axes of the horizontal spray planes containing the LDVS measurement points coincided with the axis of the DSM laser beam. In this case, experimental results of DSM and LDVS are comparable, if one takes into account the laws of the conversion of drop flux (LDVS results) into a drop concentration (DSM results). Mean diameters as well as cumulative distributions obtained by LDVS at different measurement locations are compared with corresponding DSM results. Advantages and disadvantages of both methods with respect to spray analysis are discussed.

Book An Experimental Investigation of Fuel Spray Vapor Phase Characterization

Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of Fuel Spray Vapor Phase Characterization written by James Arthur Drallmeier and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of an infrared laser extinction technique for measuring fuel vapor flux in evaporating liquid fuel sprays was conducted. The infrared laser extinction technique consists of three separate measurements: a visible light angular scattering measurement, a visible light line-of-sight extinction measurement and an infrared line-of-sight extinction measurement. Using this technique, vapor flux along with other spray parameters such as mean drop size and size distribution were measured for a pressure atomized, isooctane fuel spray. Line-of-sight infrared extinction measurements were deconvoluted to obtain radial variations of vapor concentration. Peak vapor concentrations were measured at the spray center due to air entrainment effects. Based on the radial mass fraction and measured gas phase velocity profiles, the fuel vapor mass flux was calculated; most of the vapor flux was contained in the center of the spray at all axial locations. The fuel vapor mass flux was integrated over the spray area at each axial location to obtain fuel vapor mass flow rates. Comparisons were made between the infrared laser extinction technique and a Phase/Doppler Particle Analyzer (P/DPA) in terms of several spray parameters including drop size, size distribution and, in particular, vapor flux. Size comparisons were conducted on a spatially resolved and line-of-sight basis. While the spatially resolved comparisons indicated similar trends, the angular scattering measurements consistently predicted Sauter mean diameter results $sim$10 $mu$m larger than those obtained from the P/DPA. Comparisons of measured total fuel vapor flow yielded differences of 7 to 40% between the P/DPA and infrared extinction technique. A detailed error analysis was performed to determine the error sensitivities of the vapor concentration to the measured parameters as a function of spray radius. The vapor concentration was relatively insensitive to the measured drop size distribution due to the fact that the vapor absorption was the most dominant mode of extinction. The vapor concentration was most sensitive to the measurement of the infrared extinction ratio. An upper limit for the overall error in the vapor concentration measurement was estimated at 15% over the spray radius.

Book Experimental Investigation of Spray Atomization Properties of an Aircraft Engine Swirl Cup

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Spray Atomization Properties of an Aircraft Engine Swirl Cup written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five cases are examined in which a spray field generated by a commercial simplex nozzle is influenced by the counter-rotating flow structure created by a production CFM56 swirl cup. The first case involving water atomization at an equivalence ratio of 0.7 and an air temperature of 100ʻF acts as the baseline for this study. Subsequent cases assess the effects of different liquids, water or Jet-A fuel, of different equivalence ratios, 0.7 or 1.1, and different air temperatures, 100ʻF or 400ʻF. Digital images employing a laser sheet offer some qualitative flow visualization of the spray. In addition, measurements are conducted with a two-dimensional Phase Doppler Particle Analyzer system within close proximity to the swirl cup exit plane, which provides the three principle orthogonal velocities and a diameter distribution throughout the spray field. Combined, this information provides insight to the characteristics of liquid spray behavior and its sensitivity to varying these parameters.

Book Atomization and Sprays

Download or read book Atomization and Sprays written by Arthur H. Lefebvre and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second edition of this long-time bestseller provides a framework for designing and understanding sprays for a wide array of engineering applications. The text contains correlations and design tools that can be easily understood and used in relating the design of atomizers to the resulting spray behavior. Written to be accessible to readers with a modest technical background, the emphasis is on application rather than in-depth theory. Numerous examples are provided to serve as starting points for using the information in the book. Overall, this is a thoroughly updated edition that still retains the practical focus and readability of the original work by Arthur Lefebvre.
