Book Selected Problems in Nuclear high Energy Physics

Download or read book Selected Problems in Nuclear high Energy Physics written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under this DOE funding, the experimental program described in this report now consists of two major approved experiments at Jlab: Investigation of the Spin Dependence of the Effective AN interaction in p Shell (E89-009) which is tentatively scheduled to be completed in the fall of 1999 and Direct measurement of the Lifetime of the Heavy [Lambda]-Hypernuclei at CEBAF (E95-002) which will be run in parasitic mode with E89-009. Also, a new experiment (E97-008) which attempts a directly observation of the spin-orbital splitting in the higher orbits with medium heavy targets was proposed and conditionally approved by Jlab PAC-12 in 1997. The condition for this experiment is simply to run E89-009 first and study the best possible energy resolution. The experimental group at Hampton University has played a leadership role in the development and preparation of these experiments. The Principal Investigator (PI) of this grant is spokesperson and acting program coordinator for all three experiments. Establishment of Jlab experiments is the group's main focus. In addition as originally proposed in the grant proposal, the group also contributed in completing the MEGA experiment at LAMPF. The detector development program established in the NuHEP Center has successfully constructed a large active area Lucite detector which uses a total internal reflection technique as a part of the kaon identification system for the Jlab Hall C SOS spectrometer. Its application in the first two experiments using the (e, e'K) reaction, E91-16 and E93-18 in 1996, has proved its effectiveness to reject the proton background both on-line and off-line. The author continued the program to develop new techniques and equipment associated with the Jlab experiments and possible future experiments at different national laboratories. This new work included developing: (1) a fission fragment detector with excellent timing and position resolution for the lifetime measurement of heavy hypernuclei and (2) new spectrometer systems for strangeness S = -1 or -2 hypernuclear programs at either hadronic facilities such as BNL and KEK (or JHF-50 the new Japanese 50 GeV proton accelerator) or electron facility (mainly CEBAF). The fission chamber has been built and tested by source in lab and it is now under beam test. The optical design of the S2S spectrometer was presented in AGS-2000 Workshop (1996) and recently in JHF98 International Conference.

Book Hypernuclear Physics Programs Via Electroproduction in Hall C at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Hypernuclear Physics Programs Via Electroproduction in Hall C at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hypernuclei with strangeness -1 have been intensively studied both theoretically and experimentally using hadronic probes and reactions, (K, [pi]) and ([pi], K), for many years since the first discovery of such formation in the earlier nuclear emulsion and bubble chamber experiments. Many recent review papers exist on the status of hypernuclear physics, such as the recent one written by B.F. Gibson and Ed V. Hungerford in which one can find detailed discussion on all aspects of hypernuclear physics and more complete reference list. The unique feature of this field can be summarized, in general, into three categories: (1) Strong Interaction Involving Strangeness, (2) Weak Interaction with [Delta]S = -1, and (3) Medium Modifications. For strong interaction, it is commonly believed that a hyperon can be treated as an ''impurity'' to probe deep interior of the nuclear medium to explore fundamental issues such as the changes in size and shape due to the short range feature of YN interactions, limit of conventional nuclear model (shell or cluster) in solving for many body systems with new degree of freedom, spin dependent forces (spin-spin, spin-orbital, tensor), new symmetry and explicit QCD effect in nuclear media. Many of such issues are impossible or very difficult to be studied in the ordinary nuclear physics. The keys for success in this part of field includes good energy resolution and wide ranged spectroscopy. Until now, many important issues are still unresolved or remained to be resolved in more consistent and satisfactory fashion, such as spin dependent forces. This is due to luck of high quality experimental facilities. Recent experiments at KEK using ([pi], K) reaction with a dedicated new SKS spectrometer have demonstrated the importance of improving the energy resolution. New structures were found as resolution improved only from 3 MeV to 2 MeV.

Book Hypernuclear Physics at Jefferson Lab

Download or read book Hypernuclear Physics at Jefferson Lab written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) has been successfully carrying out hadronic physics studies since 1996 at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) in Virginia, USA. The characteristics of this electron beam, together with those of the experimental equipment, offer a unique opportunity to study the electro-production of hypernuclei through the reaction A(e, e[prime]K[sup +])B[sub [Lambda]], where the hypernuclear production is tagged by the detection of the scattered electron in coincidence with the produced kaon. The kaon is a part of the associated strangeness pair production with a [Lambda] hyperon remaining embedded in the nuclear medium to form the hypernucleus. The hypernuclear physics program will cover an important part of the JLab experimental program over the next few years. This short review will focus mainly on a few subjects, and some experimental details of the Hall A experiment, where the authors have primarily responsibilities, will be presented.

Book Strangeness Nuclear Physics Proceedings Of The Apctp Workshop Snp 99

Download or read book Strangeness Nuclear Physics Proceedings Of The Apctp Workshop Snp 99 written by Il-t Cheon and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-09-27 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unique role of strangeness in nuclear physics has recently attracted much attention, from both the theoretical and experimental viewpoints. This is due not only to the broad spectrum of possible hadron many-body systems with strangeness, but also to the fact that strangeness gives us an opportunity to study fundamental baryon-baryon interactions in a new perspective. Our knowledge of this subject has widened as the scope of hypernuclear experiments has expanded from strangeness exchange and the associated production reactions to hypernuclear weak decays, β decays, cascade hypernuclei, double-Λ events, electroproduction of strangeness, etc. This trend will be accelerated by the full operation of new laboratories such as TJLab, COSY, DAΦNE, JHF, MAMI, and others. Various aspects of those important and exciting topics are discussed in this book in order to get a perspective of this fast developing area of nuclear physics.

Book The Capabilities of the Upgraded MIPP Experiment with Respect to Hypernuclear Physics

Download or read book The Capabilities of the Upgraded MIPP Experiment with Respect to Hypernuclear Physics written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe the state of analysis of the MIPP experiment, its plans to upgrade the experiment and the impact such an upgraded experiment will have on hypernuclear physics. The upgraded MIPP experiment is designed to measure the properties of strong interaction spectra form beams?{sup {+-}}, K{sup {+-}}, and p{sup {+-}}, for momenta ranging from 1 GeV/c to 120 GeV/c. The layout of the apparatus in the data taken so far can be seen in Figure 1. The centerpiece of the experiment is the time projection chamber, which is followed by the time of flight counter, a multi-cell Cerenkov detector and the RICH detector. The TPC can identify charged particles with momenta less than 1 GeV/c using dE/dx, the time of flight will identify particles below approximately 2 GeV/c, the multi-cell Cerenkov detector is operational from 2.5 GeV/c to 14 GeV/c and the RICH detector can identify particles up to 120 GeVc. Following this is an EM and hadronic calorimeter capable of detecting forward going neutrons and photons. The experiment has been busy analyzing its data taken on various nuclei and beam conditions. The table 2 shows the data taken by MIPP I to date. We have almost complete acceptance in the forward hemisphere in the lab using the TPC. The reconstruction capabilities of the TPC can be seen in Figure 3. The particle identification capabilities of the TPC can be seen in Figure 4. The time of flight system provides further measurement of the particles with momenta less than 2 GeV/c. Figure 5 shows the time of flight data where a kaon peak is clearly visible.
