Book excerpt: Modeling of the fatigue crack propagation based on damage accumulation process ahead of the crack tip has been developed, which utilizes stress and strain distribution ahead of the crack tip, estimated using Rice and elastic solutions. The methodology is based on the use of both Kmax and DK as contributing parameters to the driving force and damage accumulation. Weight function approach has been adopted to determine the Kres profile. Load interaction and overload effects have been modeled by the effect of Kres on the Kmax and DK. The predictions of the present approach have been compared to experimental data and reasonable agreement has been found.

It begins with the initiation of cracks, and with continued cyclic loading the cracks propagate, finally leading to the rupture of a component or specimen. The demarcation between the above stages is not well-defined. Depending upon the scale of interest, the variation may span three orders of magnitude. For example, to a material scientist an initiated crack may be of the order of a micron, whereas for an engineer it can be of the order of a millimetre. It is not surprising therefore to see that investigation of the fatigue process has followed different paths depending upon the scale of phenomenon under investigation. Interest in the study of fatigue failure increased with the advent of industrial ization. Because of the urgent need to design against fatigue failure, early investiga tors focused on prototype testing and proposed failure criteria similar to design formulae. Thus, a methodology developed whereby the fatigue theories were proposed based on experimental observations, albeit at times with limited scope. This type of phenomenological approach progressed rapidly during the past four decades as closed-loop testing machines became available.

In the case of cyclic constant amplitude loading the fatigue crack growth depends only on the crack, the component geometry and the applied loading. In the case of variable amplitude loading it also depends on the preceding cyclic loading history. Various types of load sequence (overloads, under-loads, or combination of them) may induce different load-interaction effects which can cause either acceleration or reduction of the fatigue crack growth rate. The previously developed UniGrow fatigue crack growth model for constant amplitude loading histories which was based on the analysis of the local stress-strain material behaviour at the crack tip has been improved, modified and extended to such a level of sophistication that it can be used for fatigue crack growth analyses of cracked bodies subjected to arbitrary variable amplitude loading spectra. It was shown that the UniGrow model enables to correctly predict the effect of the applied compressive stress and tensile overloads by accounting for the existence of the internal (residual) stresses induced by the reversed cyclic plasticity around the crack tip. This idea together with additional structural memory effect model has been formalized mathematically and coded into computer program convenient for predicting fatigue crack growth under arbitrary variable amplitude loading spectra.

Book excerpt: The research deals with the effect of welding residual stresses on fatigue crack growth in medium strength low alloy steel weldments. Three kinds of flat specimens have been used--unwelded specimens, specimens with butt perpendicular welds, and specimens with butt longitudinal welds. Residual stress distributions were others in both kinds of welded specimens. All specimens were tested under constant and variable amplitude load with stress ratios R > 0. Forman's equation and Wheeler's model of crack retardation were used for theoretical analysis of fatigue crack growth under constant and variable amplitude load, respectively. The theoretical results were more realistic when effective stress ratio Reff and effective stress intensity range ?Keff, which compensated for residual stresses, were used. It was found that the tensile residual stresses increased the fatigue crack growth rate and compressive stresses reduced it. The lower the applied load, the higher the residual stress effect. This paper presents both experimental results and an analytical method of fatigue crack growth prediction in steel weldments on the basis of results obtained from parent material properties.

The J,Jractical objectives are to develop damage tolerance ~delines for rail inspection and to improve the fracture resistance of new rail productiOn. Rail fatigue crack propagation rates and fracture resistance are strongly influenced by residual stresses, which are introduced into the rail both during proouction and in service. Therefore, the rail residual stress field must be well understood before fracture mechanics can be usefully applied to the subject of rail integrity.
