Book excerpt: The radiation field parameters in the vicinity of new type of WWER-1000 surveillance specimens boxes and in RPV simulator have been investigated in the WWER-1000 Mock-up in the reactor LR-0. The neutron and photon spectra have been measured with stilbene cylindrical crystals in the energy range approximately from 0.5 MeV to 10 MeV. The experimental values of integral neutron field parameters (attenuations of integral neutron flux densities between different points of mock-up as well as the spectral indices, i.e., ratios of integral neutron flux densities with different thresholds) were obtained also. The mock-up (LR-0 reactor) power monitoring during measurements was carried out with two fission chambers, one fixed, one moveable axially, so that four orders in power were covered. The experimental data (spectra, attenuation factors, and spectral indices) have been compared with the calculation results. The sensitivity to parameters of calculation model and method was evaluated also.

Book excerpt: The VENUS PWR Mockup Experiment is an important component of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's program goal of benchmarking reactor pressure vessel (RPV) fluence calculations in order to determine the accuracy to which RPV fluence can be computed. Of particular concern in this experiment is the accuracy of the source calculation near the core-baffle interface, which is the important region for contributing to RPV fluence. Results indicate that the calculated neutron source distribution within the VENUS core agrees with the experimental measured values with an average error of less than 3%, except at the baffle corner, where the error is about 6%. Better agreement with the measured fission distribution was obtained with a detailed space-dependent cross-section weighting procedure for thermal cross sections near the core-baffle interface region. The maximum error introduced into the predicted RPV fluence due to source errors should be on the order of 5%.

The VENUS configuration consists of a central water hole, surrounded by a 2.888 cm thick inner sheet baffle. The inner core zone in the immediate vicinity of the inner baffle contains 752 3.3% 235U, zircalloy fuel cells, with 48 pyrex rods interspersed among them. The outer core zone contains 1800 4.0% 235U, steel clad fuel cells. The core itself is surrounded by a 2.858 cm thick outer steel baffle, a water reflector, a 4.972 cm thick steel core barrel, a water gap, a neutron pad, and the pressure vessel. The primary aim of this study is to calculate the VENUS neutron source distribution, as part of the USNRC's overall program goal of benchmarking RPV fluence calculations. Of particular concern is the accuracy of the source calculation near the core-baffle interface, which is the important region for contributing to RPV fluence. The accuracy of the calculations is evaluated by comparison with gamma scan measurements performed by CEN/SCK.
