It describes how heterosexuality, homophobia and heterosexism were endured by these youth in the secondary school setting between the late 1990's and early 2000's. In this qualitative study, data were collected through a single focus group discussion and eight interviews. Several themes emerged: the difficulties gay, lesbian, and bisexual youth face in high school; their relationships with teachers and administrators; and recommendations for improving the high school experiences for these youth. All participants noted that change is possible and has indeed happened in educational settings, but call for more attention to and implementation of effective policies to introduce LGBTQ issues. The findings are supported by literature produced by nongovernmental organizations, policy analysts, and researchers."--abstract.

Understanding the Well-Being of LGBTQI+ Populations reviews the available evidence and identifies future research needs related to the well-being of SDG populations across the life course. This report focuses on eight domains of well-being; the effects of various laws and the legal system on SGD populations; the effects of various public policies and structural stigma; community and civic engagement; families and social relationships; education, including school climate and level of attainment; economic experiences (e.g., employment, compensation, and housing); physical and mental health; and health care access and gender-affirming interventions. The recommendations of Understanding the Well-Being of LGBTQI+ Populations aim to identify opportunities to advance understanding of how individuals experience sexuality and gender and how sexual orientation, gender identity, and intersex status affect SGD people over the life course.

Book excerpt: The extant research on the experiences of lesbian/gay, bisexual, and questioning —unsure- (LGBQ) youth shows that they have a lower sense of belonging and safety a tschool, are more likely to be victims of various types of bullying and to skip school, and use drugs and alcohol than their straight peers. Lately, however, a shift in direction towards examining the protective factors, which promote the well being of LGBQ youth, is happening. Extending the emerging research on this shift, the present study investigated the role of supportive adults at school in predicting LGBQ youth sense of safety and belonging. Also, this study examined whether adult support moderated the relationship between sexual orientation victimization and skipping school for LGBQ youth separately. The participants in this study (N = 19,551) were students (grades 8 through 12) enrolled in high schools that took part in a district-wide survey in a large, ethnically and economically diverse urban school district in British Columbia. Results showed that perceptions of adult support played a significant role in predicting the safety and belonging of LGBQ youth. Adult support significantly moderated the relationship between sexual orientation victimization and skipping school for bisexual and questioning youth but not for lesbian/gay youth. The implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed in the last section of this thesis.

Book excerpt: Across the United States, there has been increasing attention to school pushout, the application of harsh and exclusionary discipline of marginalized students that contributes to school dropout and/or justice system-involvement. While a growing body of research demonstrates the school-to-prison pipeline for youth of color, only one study so far has documented the disparity in school and criminal justice sanctions between lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) youth and their heterosexual peers (Himmelstein & Bruckner, 2011). Additionally, a recent national school climate survey found that LGBTQ youth were more than twice as likely as their non-LGBTQ peers to report they did not plan to finish high school, and that these expectations were tied to disproportionate school discipline, a hostile school climate, mental health concerns, discriminatory school policies, and the effect of safety and discomfort on student attendance and academic performance (GLSEN, 2016). However, no empirical research to date has looked at actual disparities in high school graduation among LGB youth. This study uses data from the National Longitudinal Survey on Adolescent and Adult Health (Add Health) to look at this disparity. The dependent variable for the logit regression is high school graduation by age 32 and the key independent variable is sexual orientation, with "non-heterosexual" being defined as having ever been attracted to the same gender, dating someone of the same gender, or describing oneself as gay, mostly gay, or bisexual. Holding constant for race, gender, socioeconomics, academic achievement, grade retention, and school absences, the findings provide modest evidence that non-heterosexual youth are 4 percentage points less likely, on average, to graduate high school (p = .05). The study also finds that controlling for potential mechanisms of this disparity such as experiences of victimization, school belongingness, skipping school, parental connectedness, expulsion and arrest, makes the relationship between being non-heterosexual and graduating high school indistinguishable from zero.

The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People assesses the state of science on the health status of LGBT populations, identifies research gaps and opportunities, and outlines a research agenda for the National Institute of Health. The report examines the health status of these populations in three life stages: childhood and adolescence, early/middle adulthood, and later adulthood. At each life stage, the committee studied mental health, physical health, risks and protective factors, health services, and contextual influences.
