Book excerpt: When my family left our small, ultra-conservative pack back in Utah to join a giant pack in Northwest Louisiana, I thought I'd be able to coast through my last year of high school in semi-anonymity, then get the fuck away from wolf pack politics and just live my life for awhile. But the Moon decided to prolong my torture by placing my fated mate in front of my face on my first day at Blackstone Academy. He's the Alpha's son and king of a school crawling with shifters, and it turns out he doesn't care to be saddled with a Moon-chosen mate who he thinks is a nobody-omega wolf. When he rejects me in front of every shifter in school, I vow to harden my heart, become impervious to the constant, deep hurt of the rejection, and figure out how to be the first wolf in known history to shake the taint of a rejected fated mate bond. I'm also becoming closer to a new student--a smoking hot and intriguing human, who I can't manage to scare off even with the drama that surrounds me and the poisonous pack politics that I can't seem to escape. I can't even tell him what's really going on, but I think he's keeping secrets from me, too.I'm Mave Fortune, and my mate threw me out like yesterday's garbage. But fuck that guy. This is a new adult, M/F 133,000 word standalone story with a HEA. Any future books in the series will feature other characters. It is intended for the 18+ crowd and contains foul language, some mild violence, and steamy scenes. If you're a fan of upper YA/NA, wolf shifters, academy romances, and all of the associated tropes, then this book is for you!

At the news of her mother’s death, Natalie Tan returns home. The two women hadn’t spoken since Natalie left in anger seven years ago, when her mother refused to support her chosen career as a chef. Natalie is shocked to discover the vibrant neighborhood of San Francisco’s Chinatown that she remembers from her childhood is fading, with businesses failing and families moving out. She’s even more surprised to learn she has inherited her grandmother’s restaurant. The neighborhood seer reads the restaurant’s fortune in the leaves: Natalie must cook three recipes from her grandmother’s cookbook to aid her struggling neighbors before the restaurant will succeed. Unfortunately, Natalie has no desire to help them try to turn things around—she resents the local shopkeepers for leaving her alone to take care of her agoraphobic mother when she was growing up. Book Fortune s Little Heartbreaker

Download or read book Fortune s Little Heartbreaker written by Cindy Kirk and published by Harlequin. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wealthy British aristocrat and single dad hires a cowgirl to care for his son in this romance from a USA Today–bestselling author. Romancing the . . . nanny? Sir Oliver Fortune Hayes is new to Horseback Hollow . . . new to Texas . . . and even new to parenting. It’s enough to drive a man daft—and daft he would go, if it weren’t for Ollie’s new nanny, Shannon Singleton. A cowgirl for a nanny? It’s a little unorthodox, but it works. The trouble is, now Oliver can’t help imagining sweet Shannon as his Valentine. She’s warm and bubbly and . . . much too young for the likes of him. Will proper Oliver maintain his upper-crust composure? Or will the love of a good Texas woman rope him in for good? “Kirk’s tale is a wonderful mix of humor, drama and everyday living. All of the characters are remarkably personable, including her buttoned-up Brit and all-American cowgirl. The hero’s transformation into a consummate father is heartwarming.” —RT Book Reviews

Book Progressives Patterns Pedagogy

Download or read book Progressives Patterns Pedagogy written by Ute Römer and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a large-scale corpus-driven study of progressives in 'real' English and 'school' English, combining an analysis of general linguistic interest with a pedagogically motivated one. A systematic comparative analysis of more than 10,000 progressive forms taken from the largest existing corpora of spoken British English and from a small corpus of EFL textbook texts highlights numerous differences between actual language use and textbook language concerning the distribution of progressives, their preferred contexts, favoured functions, and typical lexical-grammatical patterns. On the basis of these differences, a number of pedagogical implications are derived, the integration of which then leads to a first draft of an innovative concept of teaching progressives - a concept which responds to three key criteria in pedagogical description: typicality, authenticity, and communicative utility. The analysis also demonstrates that many existing accounts of the progressive are inappropriate in several respects and that not enough attention is being paid to lexical-grammatical relations.! Winner of the "Wissenschaftspreis Hannover 2006" for outstanding research monographs !

Book excerpt: "After forty years, Hal Arnold, a professor of English, returns to the Philippines yearning for the unity, spirit and optimism he knew as a 19-year-old member of a Seabee battalion in the South Pacific theater during World War II. Trying to recapture that experience, he writes ths story, vividly portraying members of the battalion who impacted his life. Two in particular--Barry Fortune, an irrepressible entrepreneur, and Roger "Billiard Ball" Billiard, a philosophical, cynical college professor--are at opposite poles in their attitudes toward life and their feelings toward their country. They are Hal's mentors, and despite their faults, his heroes. Proud of being an American, yet disillusioned with most of his compatriots whose deeds are often less than admirable in winning the war, Hal searches for his own identity. He finds it in the warm, rich culture of a small Filipino village where love and dignity thrive among a people who have suffered under the Japanese yoke"--
