Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From movie making to medical misadventures, meditations on widowhood to feminist protestations, Expectation Days is a dazzling portrayal of instances in Sandra McPherson’s life. Her autobiographical collection uses peculiar and exact language to reflect on a wide range of activities that include grouse hunting, going through airport security after 9/11, and climbing a coastal cliff. From being an unintended child to ceremonializing a lifetime “served,” McPherson speaks in both clear and distressing voices from the state of speechless fear that is bereavement. Will the little figures ever reach the monument? A doctor orders me to be on watch. Will the mist pass over their cheeks and clear the strollers’ eyes? If so, I’ll see it. I’m on watch. I train my eyes on paintings to see if there is any change. --from “On Suicide Watch”

Book Revival The New Testament Expectation

Download or read book Revival The New Testament Expectation written by Jonathan F. Bayes and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2016-01-07 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it right to pray for revival? Why are so many of the Scriptures used to support the idea of praying for revival taken from the Old Testament? Has the New Testament nothing to say on the subject? Isn't revival an Old Testament concept, completely fulfilled in the coming of Jesus Christ? These are genuine questions that some people raise, and this book seeks to address them. The author demonstrates that, even though "revival" is not a New Testament word, the reality to which the word points is definitely a New Testament theme. He also shows that it is impossible to divide the testaments, as the questions above imply, because the New Testament constantly draws Old Testament material into its own theology. Consequently, he concludes, prayer for revival today is clearly mandated by the New Testament.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “As David Robson makes plain in this compelling book, the way we think about the world can profoundly shape how we navigate it. Based in science and packed with smart advice, The Expectation Effect will expand your mind—and maybe even extend your life.” —Daniel Pink, New York Times bestselling author of When, Drive, and To Sell Is Human A journey through the cutting-edge science of how our mindset shapes every facet of our lives, revealing how your brain holds the keys to unlocking a better you What you believe can make it so. You’ve heard of the placebo effect and how sugar pills can accelerate healing. But did you know that sham heart surgeries often work just as well as placing real stents? Or that people who think they’re particularly prone to cardiovascular disease are four times as likely to die from cardiac arrest? Such is the power and deadly importance of the expectation effect—how what we think will happen changes what does happen. Melding neuroscience with narrative, science journalist David Robson takes readers on a deep dive into the many life zones the expectation effect permeates. We see how people who believe stress is beneficial become more creative when placed under strain. We see how associating aging with wisdom can add seven plus years to your life. People say seeing is believing but, over and over, Robson proves that the converse is truer: believing is seeing. The Expectation Effect is not woo-woo. You cannot think your way into a pile of money or out of a cancer diagnosis. But just because magical thinking is nonsense doesn’t mean rational magic doesn’t exist. Pointing to accepted psychology and objective physiology, Robson gives us the practical takeaways we need to improve our fitness, productivity, intelligence, and happiness. Any reader who wants to take their fate into their own hands need only pick up this book.

His own private practice is one where he rarely sees clients more than one or two times. Clients know in advance that this is the way that he works, and so their expectation is that during this session they are going to get down to the hard stuff. This means working as if each session were the last one. So, this book is about all of the things that are designed to work in a single-session mode.

Book Probability via Expectation

Download or read book Probability via Expectation written by Peter Whittle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a complete revision of the earlier work Probability which ap peared in 1970. While revised so radically and incorporating so much new material as to amount to a new text, it preserves both the aim and the approach of the original. That aim was stated as the provision of a 'first text in probability, de manding a reasonable but not extensive knowledge of mathematics, and taking the reader to what one might describe as a good intermediate level'. In doing so it attempted to break away from stereotyped applications, and consider applications of a more novel and significant character. The particular novelty of the approach was that expectation was taken as the prime concept, and the concept of expectation axiomatized rather than that of a probability measure. In the preface to the original text of 1970 (reproduced below, together with that to the Russian edition of 1982) I listed what I saw as the advantages of the approach in as unlaboured a fashion as I could. I also took the view that the text rather than the author should persuade, and left the text to speak for itself. It has, indeed, stimulated a steady interest, to the point that Springer-Verlag has now commissioned this complete reworking.

In particular he examines ideas in market and individual investor behaviour, and questions the usefulness of many of todays standard investment techniques including benchmarks, charts, analysts and 'gurus'. Book Lure Of Modern Science The Fractal Thinking

Download or read book Lure Of Modern Science The Fractal Thinking written by Bill Deering and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995-05-31 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors describe mostly in non-technical language the development of a new scientific paradigm based on nonlinear deterministic dynamics and fractal geometry. The concepts from these two mathematical disciplines are interwoven with data from the physical, social and life sciences. In this way rather sophisticated mathematical concepts are made accessible through experimental data from various disciplines, and the formalism is relegated to appendices. It is shown that the complexity of natural and social phenomena invariably lead to inverse power law distributions, both in terms of probabilities and spectra. This book tries to show how to think differently about familiar phenomena, such as why the bell-shape curve ought not to be used in teaching or in the characterization of such complex phenomena as intelligence.
