Book Expect More Children Can Do Remarkable Things

Download or read book Expect More Children Can Do Remarkable Things written by Anne Grall Reichel, Ed.D. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-09-22 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book encourages teachers, parents, grandparents, and volunteers who work with children to expect more. It focuses on the skills children will need to compete in a highly competitive global economy. From systems thinking, to interpreting complex visual images, to integrative thinking our children need a whole new skill set. For too long science and social studies have been moved to the back burner. Ironically these subjects hold great interest and opportunity to investigate concepts in depth. We need to bring them to center stage. Throughout the book the author provides many concrete examples of ways for teachers and parents to engage children in meaningful conversation and problem solving. Somewhere along the way we seem to have stopped challenging children and started enabling them instead. Perhaps this is through no fault of our own? As teachers and parents we genuinely care about children. We feel for them when they are sick, when they are bullied or when they are struggling. Quite simply it is our nature to protect. With the best of intentions we tend to try and eliminate the struggle. But the struggle is essential to growth and a personal sense of accomplishment. As children work their way through challenges they build the confidence and habits of mind needed to embrace the next challenge that comes along. This book is an invitation to adults to expect more of themselves and of the children they care about. The invitation is yours to accept!

Children have boundless energy and may appear distracted, but they are capable of understanding biblical truths even adults have a hard time grasping. Children's minds are easily impressed with new thoughts, whether good or bad, and will remember many of their young lessons for the rest of their life. Adults and churches tend to provide entertainment to occupy the children, but children ought to have our undivided attention. Jesus said, let the little children come to me. They were worthy of His time and devotion, and they are worthy of ours. Expect to be challenged and inspired as you read this classic from Charles H. Spurgeon. Learn how to enlarge your heart for all types of children, learn what lessons are best, and learn what results to expect. Book A Child s Garden of Death

Download or read book A Child s Garden of Death written by Richard Forrest and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2016-08-16 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A children’s book author and his wife investigate an impossible murder that’s over thirty years old in this intelligent, absorbing small-town thriller. Murphysville hasn’t seen a triple homicide since the Indian raids. But when an anonymous tip sends police investigators digging in a remote field, they find three rotting skeletons. One of them is missing an arm and another is that of a child who died with a doll clutched to her chest, the only clue to the grisly murders. Clearly, life in Lyon Wentworth’s cozy Connecticut suburb is far darker than it once seemed. A children’s book author and hot-air balloonist, Lyon has a personal stake in this unsolved crime: He lost a little girl long ago. With the help of his wife, Bea, a no-nonsense state senator who’s losing her hearing but not her quick wit, Lyon pursues the investigation even after the police pronounce the cold case impossible to solve. Lyon and Bea will find justice for the girl who died in the ditch—or they’ll die trying. Richard Forrest’s thrillers are uniquely realistic, showing ordinary people grappling with horrible crimes. This gripping page-turner introduced the world to Lyon and Bea Wentworth, a husband-and-wife sleuthing team in the tradition of Dashiell Hammett’s Nick and Nora Charles. A Child’s Garden of Death is the 1st book in the Lyon and Bea Wentworth Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

Book Don t Send Him in Tomorrow

Download or read book Don t Send Him in Tomorrow written by Jarlath O'Brien and published by Crown House Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2016-08-04 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Don't Send Him in Tomorrow, Jarlath O'Brien shines a light on the marginalised, disenfranchised and forgotten children of today's schools. The percentage of children achieving the government's expected standard in benchmark tests is national news every year. The progress that children with learning difficulties and SEN make is never discussed, because it is not understood. That is a problem. The bone-crushing infrastructure which professionals have to negotiate is a problem. The fact that so many parents have to fight tooth and nail so that the needs of their children are met, something the rest of us would consider a basic entitlement, is a problem. This book describes how the system and can be improved if and when these marginalised children are given higher priority by the powers that be. There is a widespread lack of understanding about special schools, the work they do, and the children they educate - the sector is largely invisible. Jarlath O'Brien has become increasingly frustrated by this, and the varying quality of provision for children with learning difficulties and SEN in mainstream schools. The successes of special schools and pupil referral units in Ofsted inspections are just not celebrated or analysed in the same way that mainstream schools' are. While, mainstream schools have their hands tied by fears over progress measures. There is a human cost to the accountability culture that reduces schooling to data and judgements: this is felt most profoundly by children with SEN and their families. Jarlath shares some of the problems he's witnessed with inclusion and exclusion: mainstream schools actively encouraging children with SEN to look elsewhere, parents reporting their children have been formally or informally excluded from school and socially excluded by the parents of other children, children asked to leave their mainstream schools because of their behaviour - usually behaviour that is caused by their needs not being adequately addressed, children who are in school but isolated from their peers. If a child can't participate in activities or trips with the rest of the class, or spends much of the day working one-to-one with a teaching assistant, is this really inclusion? The Pupil Premium has been established to ensure that children in receipt of free school meals are not disadvantaged - why does something similar not exist for children with SEN? Every health and wealth indicator that you could use to measure people with learning difficulties and special educational needs (SEN) reveals something alarming. They die younger. They work less. They are more likely to live in poverty or end up in prison or face mental health difficulties. They are much more likely to be excluded from school. They are more likely to be bullied at school. This has to end. We all have to choose to commit to recognising that society, as it is today, is a difficult place for young people to thrive. When you have autism, or Down syndrome, or any physical or learning difference, it's even harder - and the system as it stands isn't helping. We need to acknowledge that this is not right; that such a state of affairs must change; and that we all have a part to play in making that change happen. Jarlath offers suggestions for politicians, Ofsted, local authorities, head teachers, SENCos, teachers and teaching assistants about what they can do to make a difference. For all politicians, head teachers, SENCOs, teachers and parents.

This book was released on 2022-12-12 with total page 1439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wyndham created some of the most intriguing and intelligent science fiction of the 20th century. Some of his works were set in post-apocalyptic landscapes. His best known works include The Day of the Triffids (1951), filmed in 1962, and The Midwich Cuckoos (1957), which was filmed in 1960 as Village of the Damned, in 1995 under the same title, and again in 2022 in Sky Max under its original title. But some readers consider that The Chrysalids was really his best. The ideas in The Chrysalids are echoed in The Handmaid's Tale, whose author, Margaret Atwood, has acknowledged Wyndham's work as an influence. Wyndham also wrote several short stories, ranging from hard science fiction to whimsical fantasy. The Day of the Triffids The Kraken Wakes The Chrysalids The Midwich Cuckoos The Outward Urge Trouble with Lichen Chocky

Book Families Under Stress

Download or read book Families Under Stress written by Tony Manocchio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The family is perhaps the most important single institution in everyone’s life. What happens in such an intense group? How does it develop over time? What happens when stress is placed upon it, whether generated from inside or outside the family? Originally published in 1975, when the late Tony Manocchio was one of the leading practitioners of family therapy in Britain and Scandinavia, this title, written with his colleague William Petitt, is a lively study of communication within families, revealing the universal problems common to all. The authors demonstrate and illuminate the application of communication principles by analysing healthy and ‘unhealthy’ family systems in six major plays – The Winslow Boy, Riders to the Sea, Hamlet, A Long Day’s Journey into Night, Death of a Salesman and A Delicate Balance. As part of this analysis they examine the difficulties family members have in allowing for differences, in sharing secrets and the ease with which a whole family can scapegoat a single member. They give a number of short case histories and examples from other plays which further illustrate the importance of communicating clearly. The book will still be of value to all those interested in the uses of family therapy, and also to students of literature for the human insight it offers into the texts discussed.
