This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'm an American expat from Central Illinois who moved to the Philippines over eight years ago. I've been married to a loyal, loving Filipina for almost 18 years now. "EXPAT Safety & Security: PHILIPPINES" has never been more important. INCREASING TERRORIST THREATS IN THE PHILIPPINES The Communist insurgency group, New People's Army, NPA, is ramping up attacks in our area, Western Visayas. PNP Chief "Bato" Dela Rosa recently declared that the Communist thugs are targeting our region. The threat of radical Islamic terrorism is continuing to grow in the Philippines with groups like ISIS stepping up recruitment efforts here. With promised cash bonuses of 100,000 pesos, $2,000, to anyone who joins their cause, their ranks are swelling. 100,000 pesos is a lot of money in the Philippines. These recent threats prompted me to write this book, "EXPAT Safety & Security: PHILIPPINES." In addition to having lived in the Philippines full-time for over eight years, I've had prior experience as a Security Specialist in the United States Air Force, Strategic Air Command, SAC. I've also served as a Safety Committee member and Fire Warden at AT&T, the telecommunications giant. In my new book I cover such topics as "Dogs, Guns, & Guards" and give you tips on the best breeds of canines to use for your own personal security at home. Perhaps you want to ramp up your security and arm yourselves. I'm not talking about buying some Airsoft gun that won't kill some intruder, I'm talking about a real firearm. Of course, your Filipina spouse can purchase a weapon, if she jumps through spools of red tape. But this book will tell you how to buy firearms in the Philippines without going through all the hassles of government bureaucracy. Maybe you want to hire your own personal security guard? "EXPAT Safety & Security" PHILIPPINES" covers that topic. "How Safe is it to Visit the Philippines" is another important topic covered in this book. What are the biggest risks? What are the overlooked risks? How can you lessen those risks? I've woven personal accounts of our own security and safety issues in the Philippines throughout this book. If you're planning a trip to the Philippines this guide will provide you with invaluable information and advice that will make your visit to the PH easier and safer. Or maybe you're a future expat and are concerned about all the recent terrorist activity in the Philippines. "EXPAT Safety & Security: PHILIPPINES" will provide you with practical advice on how to protect you and your loved ones from terrorism and crime in the Philippines.

Book Beyond the Last War

Download or read book Beyond the Last War written by Nathan Freier and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are currently real pressures on U.S. ground forces to define their contingency future. For example, there is a perceived decline in plausible conventional warfighting scenarios, and many see maintaining large standing ground capabilities solely as a hedge against uncertainty as cost-prohibitive in an era of declining resources. As U.S. officials will undoubtedly want to consider the widest possible range of military options in the event of future crises, this study endeavors to identify ground force options that are most important to the security of core U.S. interests in two key regions of the world: the Middle East and South Asia; and the Asia Pacific. It is meant to help the Department of Defense define future challenges risk as it relates to ground forces and identify and classify specific qualitative risks that could undermine future operational success. While the study focuses on U.S. Central Command (USCENTCOM) and U.S. Pacific Command (USPACOM), its findings are likely relevant worldwide.

Book Asian Megatrends

Download or read book Asian Megatrends written by Rajiv Biswas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-02-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asian Megatrends assesses the key drivers impacting Asia over the next two decades. The rise of China is transforming the Asia-Pacific, as China’s economic and military might increasingly reverberates throughout the region. India and Indonesia are also rising Asian powers that are changing the shape of the Asian economic landscape. The rapid growth of emerging Asian consumer markets is becoming an increasingly important growth engine for the world economy and for global multinationals. However, Asia faces tremendous economic and social challenges over the long-term, including the rapid growth of Asian megacities and severe environmental problems due to climate change, water crises and pollution. Geopolitical tensions have also been escalating in the Asia-Pacific due to territorial disputes in the South China Sea and the East China Sea, increasing the risk of a regional arms race and military confrontation. Asian Megatrends is an essential read for government officials and corporate executives wishing to understand the rapidly changing risk landscape in Asia.

Book Self Initiated Expatriates in Context

Download or read book Self Initiated Expatriates in Context written by Maike Andresen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume builds on the previously published Self-Initiated Expatriation: Individual, Organizational, and National Perspectives, which served to give in-depth insights into the concept and the processes of self-initiated expatriation and presented different groups undertaking self-initiated foreign career moves. While more than a hundred articles on self-initiated expatriation (SIE) have been published in the meanwhile, an examination of the research questions and samples of SIEs in published SIE research shows that the role of context and its impact on SIEs’ career-related decisions and behaviors has not been explored sufficiently. This raises the question in how far existing research results are comparable. The aim of this follow-up volume is to deepen the understanding of SIEs’ careers, focusing on the contextual influences of space, time, and institutions on the heterogeneous SIE population. More specifically, the editors aim to shed light on spatial conditions in terms of the home and host country conditions on the self-initiated expatriation experience and examine developments over time in terms of temporality of conditions and SIEs’ life-course. Moreover, the influence of the institutional context in terms of occupational, organisational, and societal specificities will be analysed. All chapters are based on strong theoretical foundations that serve to conceptualise "context" and are written by both established and emerging global academics and researchers. Self-Initiated Expatriates in Context contributes to conceptual clarity in the burgeoning field of SIE research by drawing attention to the importance of exploring context and, thus, boundary conditions to careers. It offers specific guidance for an improvement of future SIE-related research in order to enhance the validity of future empirical studies as well as for an improvement of managerial practice. It will be of interest to researchers, academics, practitioners, and students in the fields of international business, human resource management, organisational studies, and strategic management. Chapters 1, 4, and 12 of this book are freely available as downloadable Open Access PDFs at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Book New Islamic Urbanism

Download or read book New Islamic Urbanism written by Stefan Maneval and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-12-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the dawn of the oil era, cities in Saudi Arabia have witnessed rapid growth and profound societal changes. As a response to foreign architectural solutions and the increasing popularity of Western lifestyles, a distinct style of architecture and urban planning has emerged. Characterised by an emphasis on privacy, expressed through high enclosures, gates, blinds, and tinted windows, ‘New Islamic Urbanism’ constitutes for some an important element of piety. For others, it enables alternative ways of life, indulgence in banned social practices, and the formation of both publics and counterpublics. Tracing the emergence of ‘New Islamic Urbanism’, this book sheds light on the changing conceptions of public and private space, in the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, in the Saudi city of Jeddah. It challenges the widespread assumption that the public sphere is exclusively male in Muslim contexts such as Saudi Arabia, where women’s public visibility is limited by the veil and strict rules of gender segregation. Showing that the rigid segregation regime for which the country is known serves to constrain the movements of men and women alike, Stefan Maneval provides a nuanced account of the negotiation of public and private spaces in Saudi Arabia.

Book Leaving America

    Book Details:
  • Author : John R. Wennersten
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2007-11-30
  • ISBN : 0313345074
  • Pages : 201 pages

Download or read book Leaving America written by John R. Wennersten and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2007-11-30 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today more than ever, large numbers of Americans are leaving the United States. It is estimated that by the end of the decade, some 10 million of the brightest and most talented Americans, representing an estimated $136 billion in wages, will be living and working overseas. This emigration trend contradicts the internalized myth of America as the land of affluence, opportunity, and freedom. What is behind this trend? Wennersten argues that many people these days, from college students to retirees, are uncertain or ambivalent about what it means to be an American. For example, many are uncomfortable with that they believe America has come to represent to the rest of the world. At the same time, globalization and advances in technology have enabled the growth of a telecommuting work force whose members can live in one country and work in another, and this trend, among other factors, has encouraged a new generation of people to respond to the pull of global citizenship. Leaving America is an important reexamination of one of the most central stories in the history of American culture—the story of the immigrant coming to the Promised Land. While millions still come to America and millions more still wish to do so, there is an important counterflow of emigration from America to distant parts of the planet. This book focuses on modern American expatriates as a significant and heretofore largely ignored counterpoint phenomenon every bit as central to understanding modern America as is the image of a nation of immigrants. The greatest irony in America today may well be that while argument and discord prevail in the edifice of American democracy about diversity, economic justice, equality, and the Iraq War, many of the most thoughtful citizens have already left the building.
