Book The Discus Book Second Edition

Download or read book The Discus Book Second Edition written by Alastair R Agutter and published by Alastair R Agutter. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BOOK DESCRIPTION: This Second Edition of The Discus Book has been written and produced with updates and additional information since the first edition, written in 1989, to accommodate "some" of the questionable technology changes, regarding this species since the first edition of the Discus Book, when the Author successfully bred Wild Discus (symphysodon) in captivity, the recording of such work and events transcribed to the said printed book. Alastair Agutter still remains one of a select few in the world today to accomplish such a feat, breeding wild symphysodon, and as a result of such endeavours by he, and other dedicated Aquarist colleagues, they managed to break a cycle and taboo that had lasted for more than 120 years, since the founding of the pastime we know as tropical fish keeping, after "The Great Exhibition" of 1851 and this being, to breed "The King of the Aquarium" in captivity. This second edition of the book is concise and accurate, based on proven methods and techniques, to deliver the above results. The Discus, King of the Aquarium is a highly evolved species of the Cichlidae (tooth carp) Family and will challenge any Aquarist, even tank bred species. This book will not produce any quick fixes, or silver bullets to keeping symphysodon, whom are a very highly evolved sensitive species. But will provide the secrets to successfully keeping the species, if the valuable information found in this book is followed to the letter. Natural Law teaches us to "evolve and refine" when studying quantum mechanics and natural branching, in other words stealth, efficiency and risk aversion. Such outcomes and results only ever come from following the covenant of Natural Law when one seeks "simplistic perfection" in all that we do! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discus Care: The Complete Guide to Caring for and Keeping Discus as Pet Fish The Discus (scientifically known as Symphysodon) is a genus from the Cichlidae family. The Discus is a freshwater fish that is native to the Amazon river basin. The Discus thrives in the Neotropical rivers and floodplain lakes of the Amazon. However the Discus can now be found in every continent of the world due to their popularity in the home aquarium trade. All Symphysodon species have a latterly compressed body in a similar fashion to the latterly compressed bodies of the Cichlids. However, unlike the Cichlid, the Discus has no extended finnage which gives their bodies the rounded shape that inspires their name. It is a very common misconception that Discus are hard to keep as pets but Discus have proven over time that they are incredibly robust, hardy and relatively easy fish to keep. Here at Fish Care Manuals we are passionate about fish care. As a brand we have a strong idea of what makes up a good fish care book. We have consulted with multiple experts in the field of fish caring to allow us to create a book filled with cumulative opinions and best practices. The experts we consult range from veterinarians to every day fish keepers who have had years of experience caring for the specific fish each book is on. Our aim, and mission, is to produce the best possible fish care books that are a great value for money. Book Infectious Disease Movement in a Borderless World

Download or read book Infectious Disease Movement in a Borderless World written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-04-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern transportation allows people, animals, and plants-and the pathogens they carry-to travel more easily than ever before. The ease and speed of travel, tourism, and international trade connect once-remote areas with one another, eliminating many of the geographic and cultural barriers that once limited the spread of disease. Because of our global interconnectedness through transportation, tourism and trade, infectious diseases emerge more frequently; spread greater distances; pass more easily between humans and animals; and evolve into new and more virulent strains. The IOM's Forum on Microbial Threats hosted the workshop "Globalization, Movement of Pathogens (and Their Hosts) and the Revised International Health Regulations" December 16-17, 2008 in order to explore issues related to infectious disease spread in a "borderless" world. Participants discussed the global emergence, establishment, and surveillance of infectious diseases; the complex relationship between travel, trade, tourism, and the spread of infectious diseases; national and international policies for mitigating disease movement locally and globally; and obstacles and opportunities for detecting and containing these potentially wide-reaching and devastating diseases. This document summarizes the workshop.

Book excerpt: This analytical history traces representations of flamenco dance in Spain and abroad from the twentieth century to the present, using histories, film, accounts of live performances, and practitioner interviews. Beginning with an analysis of flamenco historiography, the text examines images of the female dancer in films by Luis Bunuel, Carlos Saura, and Antonio Gades; stereotypes of flamenco bodies and Andalusian culture in Prosper Merimee's Carmen; and the ways in which contemporary flamenco dancers like Belen Maya and Rocio Molina negotiate the stereotype of Carmen and an idealized Spanish feminine that pervades "traditional" flamenco. • Pages : 304 pages

Book excerpt: In Infelicities Peter Mason explores the texts, paintings, drawings, photographs, and museum displays in which the exotic has been represented from the early modern period to the present. He describes the unique iconography that Europeans developed to convey the exotic and the means they employed to display it once artifacts were brought to Europe. In both instances, the exotic object is taken out of its original context and given a meaning and significance it never had; this new meaning and significance, Mason argues, are derived from the imposition of European cultural values and the need to recontextualize the object in a European setting.
