Book Elliptic PDEs Measures and Capacities

Download or read book Elliptic PDEs Measures and Capacities written by Augusto C. Ponce and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2016 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Partial differential equations (PDEs) and geometric measure theory (GMT) are branches of analysis whose connections are usually not emphasized in introductory graduate courses. Yet one cannot dissociate the notions of mass or electric charge, naturally described in terms of measures, from the physical potential they generate. Having such a principle in mind, this book illustrates the beautiful interplay between tools from PDEs and GMT in a simple and elegant way by investigating properties such as existence and regularity of solutions of linear and nonlinear elliptic PDEs. Inspired by a variety of sources, from the pioneer balayage scheme of Poincare to more recent results related to the Thomas-Fermi and Chern-Simons models, the problems covered in this book follow an original presentation, intended to emphasize the main ideas in the proofs. Classical techniques such as regularity theory, maximum principles and the method of sub- and supersolutions are adapted to the setting where merely integrability or density assumptions on the data are available. The distinguished role played by capacities and precise representatives is also explained. Other special features are: the remarkable equivalence between Sobolev capacities and Hausdorff contents in terms of trace inequalities; the strong approximation of measures in terms of capacities or densities, normally absent from GMT books; and the rescue of the strong maximum principle for the Schrodinger operator involving singular potentials. This book invites the reader on a trip through modern techniques in the frontier of elliptic PDEs and GMT and is addressed to graduate students and researchers with a deep interest in analysis. Most of the chapters can be read independently, and only a basic knowledge of measure theory, functional analysis, and Sobolev spaces is required.

Download or read book Physics on Manifolds written by M. Flato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Colloquium "Analysis, Manifolds and Physics" organized in honour of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat by her friends, collaborators and former students, on June 3, 4 and 5, 1992 in Paris. Its title accurately reflects the domains to which Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat has made essential contributions. Since the rise of General Relativity, the geometry of Manifolds has become a non-trivial part of space-time physics. At the same time, Functional Analysis has been of enormous importance in Quantum Mechanics, and Quantum Field Theory. Its role becomes decisive when one considers the global behaviour of solutions of differential systems on manifolds. In this sense, General Relativity is an exceptional theory in which the solutions of a highly non-linear system of partial differential equations define by themselves the very manifold on which they are supposed to exist. This is why a solution of Einstein's equations cannot be physically interpreted before its global behaviour is known, taking into account the entire hypothetical underlying manifold. In her youth, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat contributed in a spectacular way to this domain stretching between physics and mathematics, when she gave the proof of the existence of solutions to Einstein's equations on differential manifolds of a quite general type. The methods she created have been worked out by the French school of mathematics, principally by Jean Leray. Her first proof of the local existence and uniqueness of solutions of Einstein's equations inspired Jean Leray's theory of general hyperbolic systems.

Book Mathematical Models for Suspension Bridges

Download or read book Mathematical Models for Suspension Bridges written by Filippo Gazzola and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-05-29 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work provides a detailed and up-to-the-minute survey of the various stability problems that can affect suspension bridges. In order to deduce some experimental data and rules on the behavior of suspension bridges, a number of historical events are first described, in the course of which several questions concerning their stability naturally arise. The book then surveys conventional mathematical models for suspension bridges and suggests new nonlinear alternatives, which can potentially supply answers to some stability questions. New explanations are also provided, based on the nonlinear structural behavior of bridges. All the models and responses presented in the book employ the theory of differential equations and dynamical systems in the broader sense, demonstrating that methods from nonlinear analysis can allow us to determine the thresholds of instability.

Book The Porous Medium Equation

Download or read book The Porous Medium Equation written by Juan Luis Vazquez and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2006-10-26 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Heat Equation is one of the three classical linear partial differential equations of second order that form the basis of any elementary introduction to the area of PDEs, and only recently has it come to be fairly well understood. In this monograph, aimed at research students and academics in mathematics and engineering, as well as engineering specialists, Professor Vazquez provides a systematic and comprehensive presentation of the mathematical theory of the nonlinear heat equation usually called the Porous Medium Equation (PME). This equation appears in a number of physical applications, such as to describe processes involving fluid flow, heat transfer or diffusion. Other applications have been proposed in mathematical biology, lubrication, boundary layer theory, and other fields. Each chapter contains a detailed introduction and is supplied with a section of notes, providing comments, historical notes or recommended reading, and exercises for the reader.

Book The Floer Memorial Volume

Download or read book The Floer Memorial Volume written by Helmut Hofer and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andreas Floer died on May 15, 1991 an untimely and tragic death. His visions and far-reaching contributions have significantly influenced the developments of mathematics. His main interests centered on the fields of dynamical systems, symplectic geometry, Yang-Mills theory and low dimensional topology. Motivated by the global existence problem of periodic solutions for Hamiltonian systems and starting from ideas of Conley, Gromov and Witten, he developed his Floer homology, providing new, powerful methods which can be applied to problems inaccessible only a few years ago. This volume opens with a short biography and three hitherto unpublished papers of Andreas Floer. It then presents a collection of invited contributions, and survey articles as well as research papers on his fields of interest, bearing testimony of the high esteem and appreciation this brilliant mathematician enjoyed among his colleagues.
